Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a condition where the blood glucose is higher than normal condition. This condition will damage tissues in human body, and is usually caused by free radicals or by the decrease of the antioxidant defence activity. Tannic acid (tannin) is a member of antioxidant and antidiabetic agents. Antidiabetic plants used by the people are commonly unknown about their amount of tannic acid content. This study was aimed to investigate antidiabetic plants by analyzing its tannic acid content quantitatively. These compounds were compared with commercial antidiabetic drug. The determination of total tannic acid content in the plants was conducted using Folin Ciocalteu method. The results showed that the tannic acid consisted of antidiabetic drug, jackfruit bark, gambier sap, raru bark, jengkol bark, capo leaf, and sipait leaf with concentration of 21.01, 29.98, 40.95, 51.01, 51.84, 59.70 and 60.16 mg/g, respectively. The tannic acid content in the six antidiabetic plants were higher than those of commercial antidiabetic drug, therefore all of the tested plants is potential as antidiabetic drug.

Abstract

Pelawan plant (Tristaniopsis whiteana Griff.) is used by people for blood cleaner after postpartum. Scientifically, pelawan is proven as antiurolithiasis agent. However, its secondary metabolite toxicity is still unknown. This study aimed to know the histological structure of liver tissue of white rat after being given pelawan extract. This study use 8 white rats that were divided into four groups. Control group was given food and water, P1 was given food and inducer solution (mixture from ethylene glycol and ammonium chloride), P2 group was given ethanol extract of pelawan leaves with inducer solution, and P3 group was given ethanol extract of pelawan leaves. Histological slides of white rat liver were made using paraffin method, stained with Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE). Result showed that the liver of white rat changed. Therefore, the treatment of inducer solution and ethanol extract of pelawan leaves was toxic because it changed the histopatologycal part.

Abstract

Since 2006, scientists consider Sundaland clouded leopards Neofelis diardi as a unique species, different from the mainland Asia species N. nebulosa. The species is categorized as vulnerable in the IUCN Red List and is only found in Borneo and Sumatra islands. Massive deforestation in Sumatra is believed to increase the endangerment of this species. This study aimed to estimate the density of this species and assess its conservation status in Central Sumatra, especially in Rimbang Baling Wildlife Reserve. In this study we present the density estimation which was calculated with spatial capture-recapture models using photographic data resulted from a tiger-focused camera-trapping study. This study used 40 cameras at 20 stations, with accumulation of 1.710 effective camera trap days, resulted 32 independent images of 8 individually identifiable of clouded leopards. They consisted of 5 males, 1 female and 2 could not be determined. The density of clouded leopard in this study was 2,80±1,11 (D±SE) individual/100 km2. This density is considered as relative lower than the estimates of Sundaland clouded leopard densities documented in some other areas in Borneo and Sumatra. This suggests that Rimbang Baling can be managed to support a healthy and perhaps viable population of Sundaland clouded leopards in Central Sumatra.

Abstract

Ramin is a peat swamp endemic plant highly demanded in furniture industries. The high price and market demand has led to increase the illegal logging which subsequently threaten ramin population existence. On the other hand, genetic related information on ramin is limited. Biochemical approaches such as isozyme can be used to analyze genetic diversity. The objective of this study was to reveal the peroxsidase (PER) polimorphism of ramin natural population at PT. Diamond Raya Timber (PT. DRT) forest in Riau Province. PER were analyzed using horizontal elektrophoresis model. The leaf samples that used in this study were collected from 50 individuals ramin. Data were analyzed using SAHN function and UPGMA method by NTSYS version 2.0. The results showed that PER enzyme produced clear visualization, forming 12 band patterns that were formed by six bands which was different migrating direction to the anode pole (positive) and catode pole (negative). The dendrogram in this study showed that 50 individuals of ramin were clustered into two main separated groups at the level of 47% similarity coefficient. These data indicated that the genetic variation of ramin in PT.DRT was quite diverse.

Abstract

Mud lobsters (Thalassina) are one of the most common macrofauna in mangrove ecosystems, especially in the Indo-Pacific region. The presence of this fauna is typically marked by mud mounds that are hardly overseen in its habitats, as a result of its bioturbation activities. This study, which focused on Bukit Batu coastal area in Riau Province, aimed to identify the occurring species in the area, describe the distribution and abundance patterns along the sea-inland gradient, and identify critical factors affecting the patterns. Observations were carried out in the focal area from September to November 2013 along four 1100 m-long transects, on each of which 10 quadratic plots of 10 m x 10 m were established in 100-m interval. The observed parameters were the characteristics of vegetation cover, soil BD, groundwater level, groundwater salinity and pH, beside number of “active” mounds. At least two species of mud lobsters were countered, T. anomala and T. spinosa. Mud lobster mounds were totally absent at a distance of 0 and 100 m from lowest-tide line, while most abundant at a distance of 200 m, with 9.4 mounds/m2. The abundance decreased sharply following the increasing distance toward inland, which was down to 0.09 mounds/m2 at 1100 m. Mounds were more evenly distributed toward the sea, while increasingly random as their density decreased. Groundwater salinity was the most critical affecting mound distribution and abundance.

Abstract

This article reviews  three product estimators  for the population mean in  simple random sampling.  They  use the  coefficient of variation and  coefficient of kurtosis  of auxiliary variables. This article  is the reviewof  Singh’s article [Jour. Ind. Soc.  Ag. Statistics 56(3): 267-275]. Those three estimators are biased. Then their Mean Square Error(MSE) are determined. Furthermore,  MSE  of each estimator is compared to obtain the most efficient estimator.  This  study  shows  that the  modification of  the product  estimator  is the most efficient estimator if the conditions are met.

Abstract

Rama-rama is one of typical macrofauna from the mangrove ecosystem. The existence of this organism can be seen easily from the appearance of mud mounds in the ground surface as a result of bioturbation activity. The purposes of this research were to understand rama-rama species in the coastal area of Bukit Batu and the characteristic of bioturbation conducted by this organism and also to obtain the valuation of important impact of this activity to its environment. This research had been conducted from September to November 2013 in Bukit Batu and Tanjung Leban villages. Observation was conducted in four line transects, 1100 m length, from the edge of the water during the lowest tide. There were 10 transects (10 m x 10 m) placed along the line (100 m interval). The diameter and height of mud mounds, diameter of the hole, soil bulk density and the ability of rama-rama in carrying the soil / day were observed. Information on impact of the presence of the rama-rama on the social condition of people was obtained by interviewing people living around the coast. The results show that there were 2 species of Thalassina, namely T. anomala and T. spinosa. Rama-rama bioturbation activities were influenced by its body size and soil bulk density. The average of soil carrying capacity of each rama-rama was 740 cm3/mound/day. Therefore, with the average density of mound was 3,9 mound/m2, the soil carried was around 2900 cm3 /m2/ day or 11.000 m3/ha. It can be concluded that the soil carrying capacity of the rama-rama is potential to affect the coastal area environment.

Abstract

Rana erythraea (Schlegel 1837) is a semi-aquatic amphibian that can be used as enviromental indicator. The environmental change will result in the occurrence of changes in the health condition of frog. This research on blood profile of frog was conducted to find out about the health condition of the frog living in the area campus of Riau University. The study was conducted from August to October 2013. Twenty frogs were captured (8 males and 12 females) and frog blood was sampled from the heart using a syringe that has been moistened with EDTA. Hematological parameters calculated were the level of haematocryte, leucocryte, the number of erythrocyte and leucocyte were 10-27%, 1.00-4.16%, 170.000-670.000 cells/ml3 and 1.875-3.666 cells/ml3 respectively.
