Abstract

Abstract Ompok hypophthalmus Bleeker is one of fish that live in the Tarai River, a polluted river in Riau. The quality of water in the river may affects the fish health status in general, including its gill structure. A study aims to understand the histological structure of the gill of fish living in the Tarai River has been conducted in April 2018. The gill were histologically processed through alcohol series, 6mm sliced and HE stained. Types of abnormality in the gill was noted and the Histopathological Alteration Index (HAI) was calculated. Results shown that abnormality present in the gill were hyperplasia, broken epithelium, hemorrhage and curling secondary lamella. The average of HAI value was 9.7 indicates that the gill of O. hypophthalmus from the Tarai River was slightly damage.Keyword: Sheatfish, Histopathological Alteration Index, gill abnormality, polluted  river

Abstract

ABSTRACTPeriphyton is one of microorganisms that serve as primary producer in the aquatic environment. Research aims to determine the chlorophyll-ɑ concentration of periphyton attached in plastic substrate has been carried out in April-May 2018 in the Sail River. There were three sampling stations, namely S1 (in the upstream), S2 (in the middle) and S3 (in the downstream). Samplings were conducted once/week for a 3 weeks period. The periphyton samples were brushed from the plastic substrates (8 x 6) cm2. Water quality parameters measured were water current, temperature, transparency, pH, dissolved oxygen, free carbon dioxide, nitrate, and phosphate. Results shown that chlorophyll-ɑ concentration of peripyhton in the plastic substrate in the S1 was 11.29 μg/cm², in S2 was 14.52 μg/cm²and in S3 there was 26.21 μg/cm². The water quality parameters were as follows: water current 0.07-0.69 m/s, transparency 6.03-7.67 cm, temperature 29-30 0C, dissolved oxygen 4.8-5.7 mg/L, free carbon dioxide 13.6-14.6 mg/L, nitrate 0.29-0.38 mg/L, phosphate 0.34-0.54 mg/L. The chlorophyll-ɑ concentration indicate that the trophic status of the Sail River was eutrophic. The water quality is good and it may be able to support the life of aquatic organisms. Keywords: Lotic, sessile organism, trophic state, water quality

Abstract

ABSTRACT                             Artificial feed is one of the alternative diet to replace natural foodfor fish larvae.  The addition of probiotics to paste feed could  improve the digestibility of larvae. Probiotics are cultured products or live microbial feed suplements, which beneficially affect the host by improving the intestinal microbial balance. The aim of the research was to evaluate the addition of probiotic dosages to artificial feed on growth and survival rate of green catfish larvae. This research was conducted from July until September 2018 at the Fish Hatchery and Breeding Laboratory, Fisheries and Marine Faculty Riau University. The treatments in this research wereP0 (0 ml/kg feed), P1 (2 ml/kg feed), P2 (4 ml/kg feed), P3 (6ml/kg feed). The 8 days old larvae were rearing in 15 litreaquarium at stocking density 2 larvae/l for 40 days. Feeding was given 3 times/day at the rate 30% of biomass. Result showed  that the larvae fed 4 ml probiotic / kg  feed was the highest growth (1,7 g, 5,18 cm and 12,8 %/day), the best feed efficiency was 40,2% and the highest survival rate was 70%.Keywords :Green Catfish Larvae; Paste Feed; Probiotic; Growth;Survival Rate

Abstract

Abstract            The activities of petroleum drilling, ferry ports and leakages of underwater pipeline caused oil pollution in the coastal area of the Mengkapan Village. The presence of oil pollution may trigger gene mutation in specific bacteria and it may produce biosurfactants for degrading the oil. A study aims to investigate the biosurfactantproducing bacteria in the coastal of Mengkapan village was conducted from March to May 2018. There were 2 stations, in the petroleum drilling area (St1) and in the TanjungButon port (St2). Results shown that the highest bacterial density was inthe St2. Morphological and biochemical characeristics shown that there were 2 bacteria species, namely Bacillus sp and Pseudomonas sp present. Emulsification Index of the Bacillus sp was43% and that of the Pseudomonasspwas 54%, indicating that those bacteria were potencial for producing biosurfactant.  Keywords : Microorganisms, Biodegradationt, Oil, Emulsification
