Abstract

Fish meal prepared from salted by-catch contained a very high saltconsentration, therefore it must be reduced to prevent its effect to feedconsumption and growth of fed animals. This research was intended to evaluatethe effect of boiling time and water volume on salt reduction of fish meal preparedfrom salted by-catch. Salted by-catch comprised of various fish species, wasobtained from the trash fish supplier in Kampar. The fish was cleaned and boiledin boiling water with ratio of fish and bloiled water was 1: 2, 1: 3, 1: 4respectively for 15, 30 and 45 minutes. The fish was dried and grinded to fish2JOM: OKTOBER 2015meal. The effect of boiling was evaluated of salt concentration, proksimatecomposition, and NPN concentration. The results showed that the saltconcentration of by-catch reduced as the longer boiling time and the higherboiling water volume. Protein composition, moisture and fat also reduced, but ashand NPN were slightly increased as the longer the boiling time and the higherboiling boiling water volume. Boiling time of 30 minutes and ratio of fish toboiling water volume of 1:2 might be the choice as they could reduce saltconcentration and maintained protein concentration relatively. Salt, protein, fat,NPN, moisture, and ash concentration of the fish meal was 2,02%, 20,81%,2,73%, 0,27%, 10,85%, and 49,25% respectively.Key word: Long boiling, boiling water volume, salt trash fish, fish meal, salinity, proximate composition, levels of NPN

Abstract

Helostoma temmincki is a freshwater omnivorous fish and it can be found in theTapung River swamp and in the Sail River. The water quality in the Tapung River swampis relatively good condition, while the water quality in the Sail River is bad it is polluted. As the water quality in general affects the blood condition of the fish, it is predicted thatblood condition of H. temmincki from the Tapung River swamp and the Sail Riverdifferent. To understand blood condition of H. temmincki from both areas, this study hasbeen conducted from February to March 2015. There are 9 fishes from the Tapung Riverswamp and 9 fishes from the Sail River. The fish blood was taken and analyzed forerythrocytes and leukocytes content, hematocrite and leucocrite levels and types ofleukocytes present. Results shown that the erythrocytes of fish from the Tapung Riverswamp was 2,658,889 cells/mm3 and that of the Sail River was 2,318,889 cells/mm3. Thenumber of the leukocytes of the Tapung River swamp fish was 176,389 cells/mm3 and thatof the Sail River fish was 200,056 cells/mm3. There were 5 types of white blood cells inH.temmincki, namely lymphocytes, thrombocytes, monocytes, basophiles, and neutrophils.Based on data obtained it can be concluded that the blood condition of H. temmincki fromthe Tapung River swamp was better than that of the Sail River.Key words: Tapung River swamp, Sail River, Helostoma temmincki, blood

Abstract

This study was conducted in January 2015 to determine the heavy metal concentration of lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) in seawater and sediment in the west coast of Karimun Besar Island of Riau Archipelago. Samples of sea water and sediment were analyzed for their metal concentrations in Marine Chemistry Laboratory Department of Marine Sciences University of Riau Pekanbaru by using AAS Perkin Elmer 3110. Metal concentrations in the sea water were highest in Station I (Pb 0.270 mg/L and Cu 0.140 mg/L), whilst concentrations in the sediment were found to be highest in stations III (Pb 8.055 μg/g, Cu 5.359 μg/g). Concentrations of Pb and Cu in the sediment in the study area was still below the Dutch quality standard for metals in sediments and the default value of the ERL and ERM. Based on I-geo calculations it was considered that the study area still has low impact on aquatic ecology.Key Words: heavy metal, seawater, sediment, Karimun, Lead, Copper

Abstract

This research was conducted to test the antimicrobial activity of bacteriocin isolates of probiotic bacteria isolated from giant prawns (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). The method used was experiment method with tested the inhibition against pathogenic bacteria (Vibrio alginolyticus, Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas stutzeri). The results showed that bacteriocin capable of inhibiting the growth of pathogenic bacteria of P. stutzeri, A. hydrophila and V. alginolyticus. The best isolates obtained from results of this research was UG4 with clear zones ranging from 7.2 to 11.4 mm and the inhibition activity of 1476.53 mm²/mL after fragmentation with (NH4)2SO4 against pathogenic bacteria P. stutzeri was incubated at room temperature (37°C). This inhibition was caused by the presence of antimicrobial compounds that are produced by probiotic bacteria, namely bacteriocin. For isolates UG2 codes, the bacteria was resistant in which characterized by the formation of bluring zone around the paper disc.Key words: Antimicrobial activity, probiotics, bacteriocins, giant prawns
