Keywords: Reading, Miscue Analysis, Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA),Good Readers, Poor Readers. Reading is one of basic human skills beside listening, speaking, and writing which functions for helping people to gain new information. Miscue Analysis is a method which attempt to analyze the unexpected responses of unfamiliar text which occurs in oral reading. Retrospective Miscue Analysis (RMA) was used in this study by comprising reading text aloud, retelling and discussion session. These steps helped the readers develop their reading skills. This study was conducted to find out the answer to what the oral reading miscue types are produced by the good and poor readers from third semester students in Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya and what the factors are contributing the miscue production. In achieving the purposes of the study, the writer applied theories of Types of Miscue (Goodman and Burke, 1973), Three Cueing Systems (Goodman, 1969), and Factors Contributing Miscues Production (Kern, 1988). The data were originated from all utterances of six participants divided into two groups encompass good readers group and poor readers group. The data were taken by recording process, and they were transcribed into transcription. The results showed the good readers group made 23 (47%) omissions, 9 (19%) substitutions, 7 (14%) insertions, 6 (12%) self-repetitions, and 4 (8%) repetitions. Then, the results of factors contributing miscues production showed the two students were influenced by linguistic and affective factor. Meanwhile, one student was influenced by linguistic, affective, and cognitive factor. Besides, the poor readers group made 87 (44%) omissions, 49 (25%) substitutions, 33 (17%) repetitions, 19 (10%) self-corrections, and 8 (4%) insertions. Moreover, the results of factors indicating miscue production showed linguistic, affective, and cognitive factor were the three factors contributing miscue production of the three students. The result of the study showed that the good readers and poor readers made miscues in their oral reading, although the good readers made fewer miscues than the poor readers. The writer suggests for the further writer who wants to conduct a study in the same field of RMA to use different subjects and instruments. Then, the writer suggests for the lecturers to develop their strategy of teaching reading for the students.

Abstract

Keywords: affective factor, motivation, attitude.Foreign language such as English is barely spoken by the people outside English-speaking countries. Therefore, to master the language, English learners should give emphasize on two most important factors that influence their achievement in learning the language. The factors are motivation and attitude. The writer conducted a study about first year undergraduate students’motivation and attitude and also correlation between those two variables. There are three problems of the study namely: (1) What degree of motivation owned by first year undergraduate students of Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya; (2) What degree of attitude owned by first year undergraduate students of Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya; and (3) What is the correlation between motivation and attitude owned by first year undergraduate students of Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya. This study used descriptive quantitative approach because the data being analyzed was in the form of statistical data. The data were obtained from Attitude Motivation Test Battery (AMTB) questionnaire from 119 participants. In this study, the writer found that first year undergraduate students of Study Program of English Universitas Brawijaya were both integratively and instrumentally motivated. They also have positive attitude toward learning English and attitude toward English-speaking people. And there was a strong correlation between motivation and attitude. The writer suggests first year undergraduate students to interact more with English native speakers and also take courses that have practical purposes. For the lecturers, they are suggested to design teaching and learning activities in accordance with the students’needs. Finally, future researchers are expected to conduct research about motivation and attitude or any other affective factors in different approach.

Abstract

Key Terms: Honda Beat PGM-FI, List of Honda Genuine Part Sparepart, Terms ofSparepart, Word Formation Processes. In this globalization era, language develops rapidly along with the development of technology. People produce new terms for naming their new inventions or products. These new terms passed series of word formation processes before they were used in daily life. One of the examples which can be found in the real life is terms of motorcycle sparepart. In this research, the writer analyzes the word formation processes of terms of Honda sparepart found in the list of Honda Genuine Part sparepart using Yule’s theory. The purposes of this research are to analyze the word formation processes and also to know the dominant type of word formation processes found in the list of sparepart. In this research, the writer uses document analysis as the research design since this research describes the word formation processes of terms of sparepart found in the list of Honda Genuine Part sparepart. Specifically, the writer chooses Honda Beat PGM-FI motorcycle as the object of the research because this is the most selling motorcycle in Indonesia in 2014. The data of this study are sparepart terms containing word formation processes found in the list of sparepart.Research results reveal that derivation is the dominant process in the forming of terms of Honda sparepart. There are 46 terms of sparepart which are categorized as derivation out of 64 total terms. There are other word formation types found, they are compounding with 9 terms, clipping with 5 terms, acronyms with 3 terms, and blending with only one term. The writer believes this research is useful for students, especially those who are interested in studying Morphology, and also as a reference and comparison for the next researcher who wants to conduct a research in the same topic.

Abstract

Key Words: cohesive device, expository essays, grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion In this study the researcher is interested in conducting a research on cohesive devices found in expository essays written by third semester students of English Literature. There are two proposed problems: (1) what are the types of cohesive device used by the third semester students of English Literature in their expository essays, and (2) what are the dominant types of cohesive device used by the third semester students of English Literature in their expository essays. To answer the problem of study the writer employs two main theories, those are  theory of grammatical cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1976) and theory of lexicalcohesion by Renkema (2004). This research used qualitative approach because the data were explained in the form of description rather than numeral. Besides, the research was conducted through document analysis because the data were in the form of phrases or sentences containing cohesive devices derived from the expository esssays. The data source inthis thesis are 7 essays written by the students of the third semester of English Literature. These sample are taken based on purposive sampling, the criterion of which is the highest graded essay in midterm test from each class.  Based on the result of the analysis, it is revealed that third semester students of English Literature could employ all the four types of grammatical cohesion to build cohesion in their expository essays: reference (personal, demonstrative, comparative), subtitution (nominal), ellipsis (nominal, verbal, clausal), conjunction (additive, adversative, causal, temporal). In regard to grammatical cohesion, the most commonly used type is reference (66%), while in lexical cohesion, the mostfrequently used type is repetition (59%).  It is suggested to the next researchers who want to conduct study with the same field as the recent one to use other objects of study such as introduction in thesis. Besides, the writer also suggested the next researchers to investigate the corelation between the usage of cohesive devices with the clarity or persuasive quality in certain kinds of writing.

Abstract

Keywords: Ecocriticism, Human and Nature, Environmental, Epic Movie Environmental problems become the trending topic in development of modern technology era nowadays. The environmental problems are studied specifically in ecocriticism. These problems are usually caused by unbalance relationship betweenhuman and nature. In this research, the researcher analyzes harmful reciprocal relationship between human and nature portrayed in the Epic movie.  The problem ofthe research is divided into two points; (1) The harmful reciprocal relationship between human and nature, (2) The impacts of the relationship between human andnature described in the Epic movie. This research uses qualitative method to analyze data because the data are in the form of utterances and figures taken from the movie. In addition, the researcher explains the result in the form of description rather than numeral. Hence, qualitativemethod is the most appropriate method to analyze Epic movie. Furthermore, Ecocriticism is used to analyze the movie. The result shows that humans can exploit nature as research object without any concern about the impacts. Nature is also exploited as medium to establish human’s power. Humans gain benefit from the relationship because they can improve their quality of life but nature becomes increasingly damaged. Moonhaven which is originally beautiful with balance ecosystem becomes unbalance and dry.The researcher suggests the next researchers to use Ecocriticsm theory in analyzing different movie like “The Lorax Movie” to show the impact of development of technology toward nature. This movie tells that humans create artificial natural object such as trees which are made of plastic. Moreover they must buy fresh oxygen to respire.
