Abstract

The general aims of this article are to engage and make sense of the Balinese women’s narratives. It is a case study based on the narratives of two Balinese women with different caste-based social backgrounds. Inter-caste communication requires different levels of speech between interlocutors. Consequently, there are two main objectives of this article. Firstly, to explore how life events occurred during inter-caste marriages, and through the telling of these events, the informants determine their levels of speech. Secondly, to examine the identity constructed by the informants through the levels of speech. This article employed ethnographic research, narrative analysis, and sociolinguistics theory. In-depth interviews were conducted to gain meaningful stories narrated by the informants. This study revealed that Balinese women constantly shifted their levels of speech in inter-caste marriage communication contexts. These levels of speech shifting also relate to the showing or negotiating identity construction of these Balinese women.

Abstract

The use of first-person pronouns (I, we) in writing research articles was remaining problematic for both inexperienced and advanced authors. Nevertheless, some research suggested that the FPPs were increasingly used in writing research articles (RAs) to indicate the authorial identity. This research aimed to investigate types, functions, and correlation of the FPPs in tourism RAs by employing the diachronic corpus linguistics method. The data of this research were accessed and downloaded through five open access journals published by Elsevier. There were 80 selected tourism RAs from the year 2015 to 2020 that classified into five corpora. AntConc was software that was employed to retrieve the FPPs from the corpora. This research discovered the FPPs I and we were constructed as six types of authorial identity that range from the least to the strongest authoritative identity in the past five years. The constructed authorial identity had three main functions for the authors of tourism RAs, tourism as an academic discipline, and the readers of tourism RAs. The statistical calculation showed that the correlation was 0.87 that signified the use of the FPPs was increasing in the following year.  Keywords: authorial identity, diachronic corpus linguistics, the first-person pronouns, tourism research articles.

Abstract

This study used Fairclough's critical discourse analysis theory to analyse the news articles published in Magdalene ??and Femina magazines in 2020. The authors particularly emphasised finding one of three aspects of Fairclough's socio-cultural practice: power. From this point, the authors attempted to find out the depiction of women and the stance of the contributors in the news articles about sexual harassment. This study found that the aspect of power constructed by contributors from news articles and magazines depicted women and men as vulnerable groups to sexual harassment. However, the harassment is described as still predominantly experienced by women. The findings also suggested that the contributors attempted to oppose male domination and power relations in the scope of work, especially in cyber sexual harassment.

Abstract

The present study discussed the representation and identity of three selected women figures who contributed to the development of tourism in Bali and worked as a team leader, an entrepreneur, and an influencer, respectively. This study has two objectives: 1. to find out how women represent themselves and 2) to find out how women build their identity in the tourism context using narration. The authors used narrative inquiry to collect valuable stories from the informants. Using narrative inquiry, the stories produced by the informants were unique and meaningful. The study’s results revealed that women represented themselves as figures responsible for fulfilling domestic, i.e. family, and non-domestic roles, i.e. careers. The study also revealed that they still embraced traditional and domestic roles as their identity while simultaneously managing to actualise themselves in their careers. Keywords: identity, gender, narrative inquiry, women’s representation, women’s language

Abstract

Corpus has significantly contributed to dictionary-making. However, despite this high potential, scholars need to pay more attention to the benefits of corpus to junior dictionary development of Indonesia’s local language, i.e., the Balinese language. To fill this gap, the researcher built a 56590 word-sized corpus from the data obtained from published Balinese short stories and children’s songs. AntCont version 4.1.1 software was employed to retrieve words and collocations, focusing on selecting nouns for the junior dictionary entries. The study was the first of its kind to utilise corpus to design a junior dictionary for the Balinese language. Theoretically, this study significantly improved the design of a new corpus-based dictionary for junior users that entails unique and culturally bound words in Balinese. Practically, this study expands the number of dictionaries provided as a source for learning Balinese, primarily for junior users.
