Abstract

Nowadays, people tend to have so much necessities, despite their low income. Therefore, the available area for furniture in living spaces are mostly incompatible to provide those needs, resulting in the large number of families living in flats. On the other hand, materials used for furniture sometimes could also become the obstacles. Thus, the alternative material offered by designer is cardboard, which usually used only as a wrapper and then being discarded. The idea creates a new research problem that is how to design multifunctional furniture for flats type of residential space using cardboard material. Therefore, the designer provides an alternative solution where multifunctional (modular) furniture designed from cardboards will be easily combined and arranged compactly. The explosing design method is used in the design process, in which analysis and programming toward the existing problems are keys to create an innovation. The result is 3 sets of furniture, each of which has 3 different types of furniture (desk-chair-storage cabinet). Moreover, each set of furniture can be arranged in a compact and modular way to accommodate the users’ needs.

Abstract

This interior design of multi-culture restaurant in Surabaya is based on human's main needs, circulation efficiency between the server and the customer, and also the development of restaurateur business in big cities. As the time goes on, interior design at a restaurant has become very important. Therefore, the design in this foreign restaurant is focusing on the function, aesthetics, and also the circulation. This multi-culture restaurant provides three kinds of different menus from three different countries; America, China, and Japan, so people can freely choose their own favorite. The concept applied is also compatible with each of their own culture to make this design more interesting. With so many choice of menus and a comfortable interior for any kind of people, apart from becoming a place to eat and to hang out together, this restaurant can also be used as a business place, such as a meeting place with clients, or to entertain them. The style applied is a modern style with the some variations of colors, shapes, or ornaments that symbolized each of their own countries, so the ambiance in that restaurant will become stronger and less boring.

Abstract

The development of restaurants in Surabaya continues to increase from year to year. But some restaurants have failed in the business due to lack of strong identity of a restaurant. Thus there is still an opportunity to provide a place to eat, with a special feature of the Japanese bakery restaurant. The design method used is the design thinking method proposed by Linda Naiman with the adjustment. The design stage is discover, reframe, incubate, ideate, evaluate, prototype, deliver, iterate. The design that has been done with the purpose of having a specific identity, is achieved by implementing the concept of Captivating Experience in Japanese Culture. Several concept implementations in the design decisions are as follows: providing a Bakery facility that allows consumers to shop for snack-related items on the 1st floor, a luxury-dining public area and a Japanese-style sushi bar as well as a VIP room that provides a teppan experience to its users on 2nd floor, common dining area to increase the number of consumers and tatami dining areas suitable for consumers who want to relax enjoy tea like Japanese culture on the 3rd floor.

Each set is not only designed to meet complex user activities, but is also applied to different furniture with different systems. Furniture sets are expected to accommodate the activities of users for a long time (sustainable). In other words, the furniture sets can be changed to fit the needs and activities of the growing and ever changing family. This furniture design is designed for the development of infant to toddler age, but  still can be used when the child grows bigger by utilizing it into other facilities and functions. The existence of this design gives new ideas on the market to solve existing problems in the living room.
