Journal of Dentistry Indonesia (JDI) is a scientific journal that is published three times annually (April, August and December). This journal aims for continuous dissemination of updates in relation to dentistry and its related fields in the form of original articles, case reports and reviews. Its first publication was in 1993, under the name of Majalah Kedokteran Gigi Indonesia, published by the Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Indonesia. All submitted manuscripts are subjected for double-blind peer reviews and editorial reviews processes before being granted acceptance. Abstract

Objectives: To evaluate the oral health status of the professional soccer players in Thailand. Methods: Twenty-five Thailand professional soccer players’ oral conditions were examined and included in this study. DMFT, Quigley & Hein plaque index (PI), Löe & Silness gingival index, World Health Organization malocclusion index, pocket depth, TMJ examination and history of dental trauma were recorded. Results: The results demonstrated poor oral health level including dental caries (84%), DMFT score mean was 10.08, dental attrition (60%) and periodontal pocket (36%). Thirty percent of all players presented bruxism. More than 40% of athletes were bothered by their oral health with 28% reporting an impact on quality of life and 18% on training and performance. Conclusion: The oral health of Thai professional soccer players was poor that may result in negative impact on well-being, training and performance. As oral health is an important element of overall health and well-being, health promotion is required to optimize soccer player performance.

Abstract

Study on the structure and the mechanism of the formation of early caries is an important premise for evaluating the caries-preventive methods. Objective: To describe micrograph images of experimental carious lesions at early stage in permanent teeth in Vietnamese. Methods: There were 60 permanent extracted premolars from patients aged 18-25 used in this study. After cleaning and removing the remaining soft tissue, each tooth was painted with acid-resistant coating leaving an enamel window of approximately 1 × 1mm2 on the buccal surface. The artificial carious lesion was performed by soaking the teeth for 96 hours in the demineralization solution and evaluated using the ICDAS criteria. The tooth specimen was observed under a scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Results: The experiment resulted 66.7% of ICDAS 1 and 33.3% ICDAS 2 carious lesions. The mean depth and area of the lesions were 107.6µm and 1.14 µm2 , respectively. The difference in depth and area of lesions between group ICDAS 1 and ICDAS 2 was significantly statistical with p=0.0001. The micrographs showed that after being soaked in demineralization solution, enamel surface became rough, enamel rods lost the minerals in the body more than in the sheath, cross-sectional images showed widened gaps between the rods due to demineralization. There was a difference in demineralization degree between group ICDAS 1 and 2. Conclusion: The image of carious lesions was gained after the teeth were soaked in demineralization solution. It showed different characteristics of the resulted lesions based on ICDAS criteria for early carious lesions using scanning electron microscope

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the phenotype and genotype of E. faecalis isolated from the root canal and saliva of primary endodontic patients with periapical lesions. Methods: Eighteen adult male and female individuals suffering from primary endodontic infection, either with or without periapical lesions, were involved in this study. Root canal scraping and saliva were collected from each subject and used for bacterial quantitation using a real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Enterococci were isolated using ChromAgar medium and then identified using both biochemical (Gram staining and catalase tests) and molecular biology (conventional PCR) methods. Gelatinase activity, polysaccharide capsul profile and mRNA ace expression level were determined using microbiological, biochemical and molecular biology approach, respectively. Genotype of E. faecalis was determined based on nucleotide sequence of ace and gelE genes analyzed using web-based 3730xl DNA Analyze software. Results: The results showed that except for its proportion, no significant difference was found in phenotypes (gelatinase activity and mRNA ace expression levels) and genotypes (polymorphism of Cps operon and variation of ace and gelE nucleotide sequences) of E. faecalis isolated from the root canal and saliva of primary endodontic patients had or had no periapical lesions. Conclusion: It can be concluded that E. faecalis proportion had a role in the occurrence of periapical lesions in the primary endodontic patients, but not gelatinase activity, mRNA ace expression level, Cps operon polymorphism or ace and gelE nucleotide sequence variations.

Abstract

Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia which is surrounded by its satellite cities Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi. Nonetheless, scarce information are available of the current oral health of children. Objective: The study aims to describe caries and gingival status among 5 and 12 years old children in Jabodetabek. Jabodetabek is an abbreviation of Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, and the satellite cities in its surrounding (Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi). Methods: The survey was done in 2014 and had already got ethical approval. Design of this study was crosssectional. Subjects were 5-year-old and 12-year-old Indonesian children living in Jabodetabek, selected using cluster sampling method. One trained examiner performed the clinical examination. Caries experience was measured using DMFT index, severity of decayed teeth was assessed using PUFA index, gingival status and oral hygiene were measured by Loe and Sillness modified index. Results: A total of 390 5-year-old and 458 12-year-old children with balanced proportion between girls and boys participated in the survey. The prevalence of caries experience among the 5-yearold children and 12-year-old children were 90% and 84% respectively. The mean DMFT and DT scores among the 5-year-old children and 12-year-old children were 7.5±5.5 and 6.8±4.8; 3.2±2.2 and 2.9±2.1 respectively. Pulp involvement were apparent in 45% and 23% of caries in 5 and 12-year-old children respectively. Most children, 45% 5-year-old children and 92% 12-year-old children had substantial amount of plaque. Moreover, 68% 12-year-old children had gingivitis. Conclusion: Dental caries were prevalent among 5 and 12-year-old Indonesian children in Jakarta and its satellite cities. The oral health condition of most of the children were poor
