Abstract

This article will show that the implementation of the Javanese Islamic tradition in the form of the ritual of the life cycle (life circle) is the implementation of the ideology of Shāfi‘ī developed by his followers (aṣḥāb). The ideology was then known as the ideology of aṣḥāb al-shāfi‘īyah. The ritual of life in the form of a birth ritual (metu), marriage (manten) and death (mati) has been mentioned in the classic Islamic book (kitab kuning). Allegations that Javanese Islam as syncretic Islam and the adoption of Hindu and Buddhist traditions are wrong. The ritual of the life circle as shown in this article is emerging from within Islam itself as an embodiment of the interpretation of Islamic doctrine. The researcher gets this conclusion after doing research of various classic Islamic books that explain the ritual of the life circle. To find out the conclusion, the researcher used the ideological criticism of Pierre F. Bourdieu. This article, therefore, rejects the views of outsiders such as Geertz, Beatty and Mulder, who explain that the ritual of Javanese Muslim is an impure doctrine of Islam.

Abstract

The development of Islam in Indonesia cannot be separated from the role and influence of Islamic organizations. Islamic organizations in this region are usually divided into two; traditionalist and modernist. One of the Islamic organizations labelled as traditionalists is Al Jam’iyatul Washliyah. Studies on Al Washliyah have been carried out, but the research on the role of Al Washliyah in developing the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā'ah school has not been carried out and is still neglected. This article aims to examine the role of the Al Washliyah organization in strengthening the Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā'ah school in Indonesia. By combining library and field studies, this study found that Al Washliyah played an active role in developing the thought of the school through its institution called the Al Washliyah Fatwa Council, while the scholars of Al Washliyah had produced works in theology in line with the framework of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah.

Abstract

Nowadays, the proliferation of radicalization among the so-called Generation Z in the online space shows an alarming phenomenon. This article is to explore how online media is used by a woman of generation Z, Nurdhania, to access ideological propaganda of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The questions are how was the propaganda embedded in Nurdhania’s mind? How big are the Nurdhania’s commitment, involvement, and struggle in supporting ISIS? To answer these questions, this research used the method of ethnography, through the internet, of blogs and social media that belong to Nurdhania, and conducted an interview with one of her relatives in Yogyakarta. This article argues that Nurdhania was exposed to the ideology of ISIS because of (1) her confusion with the uncertainty of the future; (2) a ‘moral panic’ she had experienced; and (3) the Islamic State highlighted as the most ideal state system.

Abstract

Pondok Pesantren Salaf Al-Anwar, Sarang, Rembang, Central Java, is one of pondok pensantrens based on Nahdlatul Ulama’s moderate (tawassuṭ) understanding, and adheres to the teachings of ahl al-sunnah wa al-jamā‘ah. The purpose of this study is to understand and describe the religious moderation model developed and implemented at Al-Anwar. The results of this descriptive-qualitative study show that the religious moderation model carried out at Al-Anwar is a model of implementing an educational system based on the Salaf curriculum, in which message materials are based on the books of turāth. This model, along with kiai’s strong credibility, becomes an effective media in instilling moderate attitudes for ‘santri’ and the society. The implementation of religious moderation in pesantren can be done through the attitudes and behaviours of santri, which are always guided by the pesantren’s two principles of thought: Firstly, ‘santri’ must have special knowledge as a provision for themselves and general knowledge to face their community. Secondly, ‘santri’ in solving social problems must always refer to the four pillars of the nation.

Abstract

The popularity of al-Bukhārī as the expert of ḥadīth is indisputable; he reached his top figure; his name becomes a guarantee of his ḥadīth validity; besides, he is also well-known as the expert of Islamic law (faqīh). However, his expertise in Islamic law is often disregarded. In fact, the authority of al-Bukhārī in Islamic law reaches its peak as an absolute mujtahid (mujtahid muṭṭlaq). This phenomenon raised some questions. Firstly, is al-Bukhārī affiliated with one of the established Sunnī madhhabs? When a mujtahid has reached his absolute rank, he needs his own fiqh methodology construction, other than following another methodology. Secondly, does al-Bukhārī have his own methodology? Frankly, an absolute mujtahid has an opportunity to establish his own madhhab ordained to his name. Thirdly, why is al-Bukhārī madhhab unpopular among Sunnī madhhabs? This article found that al-Bukhārī is not affiliated to certain madhhabs, then explored the methodology formation as well as other factors underlying the failure of formation of al-Bukhārī’s madhhab.
