Abstract

Thailand is one of the countries in the Southeast Asia region with quite high cases of human trafficking, either as a destination country, sending country, or transit country. According to this, Thailand seeks to combat human trafficking through its implementation of the ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children which is implemented as a reference for their national agenda. In this qualitative research, the 4Ps are seen as the key points, including prevention, protection, prosecution, and partnership. The commitment implemented by Thailand in the 2017-2022 period is a form of compliance to combat human trafficking through the international regime. This is also used as an effort to maintain stability, specifically in national security and particularly in regional security, namely through a number of prevention strategies to the community, facilitating protection for victims, fulfilling justice for victims by prosecuting perpetrators, and strengthening synergy between institutions in its implementation. Keywords:  Human Trafficking, Security, ASEAN, Thailand

Abstract

Indonesia, as the chair of ASEAN in 2023, focused on promoting ASEAN as a fast-growing, inclusive, and sustainable economic region with the theme "Epicentrum of Growth". To achieve the goal, ASEAN emphasized the need for a strong regional health framework, food and energy security, and financial stability. However, it is important to mention that the theme did not specifically address environmentalissues, despite Indonesia's efforts to lead initiatives addressing environmental concerns in Southeast Asia during its time as ASEAN chair. The purpose of this paper was to examine Indonesia's role in environmental diplomacy while serving as the ASEAN chair in 2023. This diplomacy involved promoting joint actions to address climate change, preserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable resourcemanagement. Indonesia effectively involved ASEAN member countries in coordinated environmental efforts through hosting crucial meetings, workshops, and collaborative projects in the forms of collaborative agreements and initiatives during its chairmanship. The study employs a single case study methodology, wherein data collected from relevant documentation concerning Indonesia's involvemen

Abstract

Yogyakarta faces severe environmental issues, including a waste crisis and environmentally damaging mining activities. Muhammadiyah, a socio-religious organization, emphasizes environmental consciousness through its Environmental Assembly, aligning with SDG 13 on climate action. Meanwhile, the United Nations (UN), as a key SDG leader, is working with Yogyakarta's Regional Government on the Eco-District project, aiming to create sustainable urban areas by integrating environmental, economic, and social dimensions for an improved quality of life. This study explores the potential collaboration between the UN and Muhammadiyah to develop the Eco-District concept in Yogyakarta, leveraging the UN’s global environmental experience and Muhammadiyah’s extensive influence in Indonesian communities. Using a qualitative approach with a literature review, this research highlights strategies such as renewable energy promotion, waste management, green space expansion, and community education on sustainability. It assesses the planning, implementation, and outcomes of EcoDistrict projects, focusing on successes, challenges, and the value of multi-stakeholder partnerships for addressing complex environmental issues and fostering sustainable urban growth.

Abstract

This study aims to describe Indonesia’s niche diplomacy during its chairmanship of the Archipelagic and Island States (AIS) forum in 2023. This research uses descriptive qualitative method by utilizing the niche diplomacy concept to describe Indonesia’s maritime foreign policy as a middle power. The result shows that Indonesia practiced niche diplomacy during its chairmanship of the AIS Forum in 2023 by enhancing its maritime foreign policy in three ways. Firstly, securing niche in maritime foreign policy by addressing the archipelagic and island states’ environmental problems, encouraging AIS participants to sign the Manado Declaration, and providing funding to establish a secretariat and support AIS Forum’s programs. Secondly, Indonesia obtains national interest by selecting the AIS Forum’s key issues in line with the Global Maritime Fulcrum’s pillars, conducting domestic policies to support the AIS Forum, and encouraging other states to do the same. Thirdly, contributing towards international agenda by striving to reach the Sustainable Development Goals 14, and preparing the AIS Forum to become an international organization. Hence, a middle power conducting niche diplomacy needs to select a low political issue to address through its domestic and foreign policies to gain national interest and benefit other states as well.

Abstract

The Taiwan reunification dispute, based on the One-China Policy, continues to be a strong ambition for China. Chinese President Xi Jinping has asserted that nothing can prevent China from achieving reunification, and this has become a strong reason for China to launch various strategies that not only take the form of intervention but also through propaganda manipulation in the media. Media has become a powerfull instrument of interests in China, serving as an influence machine for the Party and an agent of relational propaganda production between information authoritarianism and control over the growth of influence connected to the strategic agenda. Through the media, propaganda is packaged as a tool that has been designed to influence the spread of belief in Taiwan-China reunification. And choose reunification as a future ideal that must be realized from the perspective of mainland China's side. This study attempts to analyze the media agenda through the method of presenting propaganda on the issue of Taiwan reunification. The author observes that China has implemented a collaborative strategy between the use of issue framing, nicknames selection, and specific delivery models, all of which point to several propaganda techniques used as a tool to manipulate Taiwan reunification. However, for specific influence and outcomes, the research dimension still needs to be developed

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the implementation of robust peacekeeping through the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in order to achieve sustainable peace. The study applies the concepts of robust peacekeeping and Johan Galtung’s theory of peace. This research is classified as qualitative. The data collection technique used is a literature review, while the data analysis technique follows Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, which consists of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the implementation of robust peacekeeping through the FIB has not yet succeeded in fostering positive peace, defined as the absence of structural violence marked by the presence of social justice and equitable distribution of resources. The conflict in the Congo is driven not only by armed groups, but also by social inequality, weak state institutions, competition over natural resources, and the involvement of external actors.

Abstract

The lack of skilled workers in Germany, the challenge of demographic bonuses in Indonesia, and the flow of mobility that has the potential to trigger brain drain from complex and asymmetric problems in the Indonesia- Germany Ausbildung program. This research aims to map complex interdependence patterns, assess the distribution of benefits or risks, and formulate policy options so that vocational mobility contributes to Indonesia’s brain gain. Qualitative-descriptive methods based on literature studies are used to assess motives, policy actors, and distribution of benefits and risks. The findings suggest an asymmetrical state of interdependence with Germany that benefits through the supply of skilled labor and the strengthening of the innovation ecosystem. On the other hand, Indonesia has access to international standardized training, legal work mobility, and mitigation, but faces the risk of permanent migration due to weak recognition and reintegration. Recommendations include recognition of overseas certification, talent circulation schemes, fair recruitment, enterpreneurship incentives and alumni programs, and multi-channel diplomacy orchestras. The targeted implementation of the agenda has the potential to convert Ausbildung mobility into sustainable brain gain and balance partnerships.

Abstract

The conflict between India and Pakistan has been going on for more than a decade and has intensified in recent years. In the context of contemporary geopolitics, this dispute reflects the dilemmas and complexities of the foreign policy of developing countries seeking to navigate their interests amid rivalries between major powers. This article examines the dynamics of the India-Pakistan conflict using the concept of the prisoner's dilemma in the framework of game theory to understand how rational calculations and limited trust shape the behavior of both countries. In this analysis, the external involvement of Tiongkok and the United States is seen as a complementary variable that strengthens the incentives for both countries to maintain non-cooperative strategies for short-term national goals. This situation shows that the foreign policy orientation practiced by developing countries is often influenced by the distribution of power at the international level, which limits regional cohesion. This article contributes to expanding the study of international relations in South Asia, particularly in understanding how the involvement of extra-regional powers and strategic rationality shape foreign policy behavior in the protracted conflict between India and Pakistan. Keywords: United States, India-Pakistan, Developing countries’ foreign policy, Prisoner’s dilemma, Tiongkok.

Abstract

The Second Nagorno-Karabakh War of 2020 marked a significant change in the character of modern warfare, characterized by the dominance of information, the use of advanced technology, and the integration of cross-domain operations. This study aims to analyze how Azerbaijan applied modern military strategies in the conflict, emphasizing the interaction between technological innovation, doctrinal modernization, and operational effectiveness. Using a qualitative approach based on secondary data, this study examines the implementation of C4ISR systems, the use of UAVs and loitering munitions, and the execution of joint operations that formed the foundation of Azerbaijan's military success. The analysis is conducted through the Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) framework as developed by Andrew W. Marshall and Andrew F. Krepinevich, which emphasizes the importance of integrating technology, doctrine, and organization in creating strategic superiority. Abstract

The Korean Peninsula has long experienced fluctuating dynamics between South Korea and North Korea. In responding to this situation, Moon Jae-in implemented the Sunshine Policy towards North Korea. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using Keohane and Nye’s Complex Interdependence framework. It examines the extent to which complex interdependence was reflected in the implementation of the Sunshine Policy during the Moon Jae-in era through document analysis and literature study. The result shows that Moon Jae-in’s Sunshine Policy was on the right track to fostering complex interdependence with North Korea. However, Moon ultimately failed to sustain this effort because inter-Korean relations remained heavily dominated by state actors, political security issues, and due to the collapse of the US-North Korea summit in Hanoi, which derailed various planned inter-Korean cooperation initiatives.
