Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Conflict plays a major role in famine as 60 percent of the world's hungry people come from conflict and violence-prone areas. The current conflict between Russia and Ukraine is a clear example of the relationship between conflict and food crisis. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is not only causing hunger for Ukrainians, but also for people in other countries. Conflicts involving the largest food supply countries have a direct impact on global food distribution. This research aims to examine the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on global food insecurity using a qualitative-descriptive method. Data were collected using literature study technique with the help of secondary data. The results of this study show that the food insecurity caused by the war in Russia and Ukraine also has an impact on the price of goods in a number of countries. The interruption of supplies from Russia and Ukraine hampered the supply chain of food commodities and other agricultural products. As a result, the prices of these other types of products have increased. In fact, food insecurity can also have an indirect impact on increasing the country's foreign debt.

Abstract

Two abrupt geopolitical events happen between 2022 and 2023. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and Finland’s application for NATO membership later that year shocked the geopolitical situation in Europe. The potential threat Russia brought upon its closest neighbour, Finland, has resulted in the Balancing action by Finland. Finnish Paradox, the development of Russia’s military, and Moscow’s passive-aggressive history are a few factors that led to Finland’s response to Russia’s potential threat. Balance of Threat theory will be used to explain the potential threat to Finland from Russia and how it shapes Finland’s geopolitical decision. The research will surround the question of “How does Finland respond to the potential threat from Russia Post Russo-Ukrainian Conflict Escalation?” and the hypotheses of “Finland joins NATO in 2023 because it is taking a balancing action towards Russia due to the potential threat Russia poses against Finland”. Thus, this research will scrutinize why and how Finland responded to the Moscow-Kiev conflict escalation. Russia’s numerous options of military strength added to its past aggressive behaviour, total aggregate and offensive power, and proximity to Finland, are adequate to be considered a threat to Finland. Therefore, Finland’s balancing action towards Russia’s potential threat is valid.

Abstract

This article examines the efficacy of economic sanctions within the context of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. Traditionally viewed skeptically by scholars, economic sanctions were reconsidered in the 1980s as potentially effective. This study evaluates U.S.-led sanctions aimed at deterring the invasion and weakening Russia's economic and military capabilities. Despite these efforts, Russia's economy rebounded in 2023, and its military actions continued. The research explores why the bipolar system limits the impact of the U.S. security coalition’s economic sanctions on Russia’s economy and has not effectively reduced Russia’s power to wage war on Ukraine. By applying neostructural realism theory, the article argues that as a revisionist great power pursuing a unipole position, China ensures that the U.S.’ proxy war with Russia is long and costly by offsetting U.S. economic sanctions. China achieves this through increased imports of Russian oil and gas, using its financial payment system, and exporting machinery and semiconductors to Russia. This support sustains Russia's economy and military capacity, highlighting the limitations of economic statecraft in a bipolar world where major powers counterbalance each other's influence. The study underscores the need to reassess economic sanctions in contemporary geopolitical conflicts.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze United States policies towards immigrants under President Joe Biden that reflect Responsibility to Protect through the fulfillment of immigrants rights. Specifically, this research uses Jack Donnelly’s concept of Universal Human Rights to look at the fulfillment of immigrants human rights and bridge the concept of Responsibility to Protect, as well as Diane Stone’s concept of global public policy to analyze whether the United States’ policies towards immigrants heed international rules and norms that have been agreed upon by the world. With violence becoming an increasing concern in several countries, the United Nations and countries around the world, including the United States, passed the Responsibility to Protect resolution. This resolution advocates an increased role for states and the international community to respect human rights and protect civilian populations of any nationality from mass crimes. This research found that United States policies towards immigrants in the Biden era that reflect the Responsibility to Protect are in the form of canceling controversial policies of the previous era, re-enacting old policies, and new policies that are pro-immigrant, especially towards illegal immigrants who experience crimes against humanity or violence in their home countries.

Abstract

The rise of far-right movements globally, exemplified by the Identitarian Movement, underscores the significance of social media in political mobilization and ideological dissemination. This research addresses the question: How does the Identitarian Movement utilize social media affordances to propagate its ideologies transnationally? Through a qualitative case study approach, this study analyzes secondary data from reports, books, and academic databases, focusing on the Identitarian Movement's strategic use of platforms like Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, and Telegram. The findings reveal that the movement exploits social media affordances of visibility, editability, persistence, and association to craft and disseminate high-impact, visually appealing content designed to engage and radicalize audiences. The "Defend Europe" campaign is highlighted as a significant example of these strategies in action. The author argues that understanding these digital tactics is crucial for comprehending the global spread of far-right ideologies and for developing effective counter-extremism strategies. The study concludes that the Identitarian Movement's adept use of social media not only enhances their reach but also solidifies their influence across national borders, posing substantial challenges to democratic institutions and social cohesion.
