Abstract

Brucella vaccination was not only able to reduce the prevalence of brucellosis, but it could also affect reproductive efficiency. The objective of the study was to know the effect of brucellosis vaccination on reproductive efficiency of dairy cattle in terms of service per conception (S/C), days open (DO) and calving interval (CI). Data from individual records of 100 dairy cows at parity one, two and three owned by ranchers were analyzed descriptively based on a randomized block design. The results showed that vaccination had a significant effect on days open (DO) and services per conception (S/C). Abstract

The success of estrus detection ensure the correct time of insemination so the high conception rate can be resulted. This research was objected to design an electronic equipment as sensor transducer for measuring the change of circular pressure of vaginal wall of the cows. A sensor used was Load cell type M322. The sensor was connected to microcontroller and a display. The results showed that the applied sensor on a stainless steel transducer steak with a diameter of 2.5 cm and length of 40 cm measured a sensitive change of pressure attach it. This sensitivity was tested to measure the change of pressure of different dept of water i.e. 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 cm. Two equations was resulted from this measurement, while a linear regression was Y= -36.412+197.53X a quadratic equation was Y= 253.3+84.09X+5.09X2. The sensor was then applied in estrus beef cow, not estrus beef cow and estrus dairy cow for 10 days. The same pattern was observed in estrus of both beef and dairy cows: a high values were detected in the non estrus phase while during estrus phase the values were in basal. In contrast, anestrus cow showed high value during 10 days observation, and 5 min application of each. In conclusion, this designed estrus detector was possible to be developed toward application in the farmers after some modifications were created. (JIIPB 2010 Vol 20 No 1: 11-21). Abstract

The aim of the research was to know  the performance of milk yield Holstein Friesian (FH) of dairy cows at various parities and month of lactation in different altitude. The research was conducted from January to March 2010 at Setia Kawan dairy cooperative in Nongkojajar (highlands) and Suka Makmur dairy cooperative in Grati (lowlands). Both cooperatives were located in Pasuruan regency. The research materials used totally 90 heads of FH dairy cows (45 heads in Nongkojajar and 45 heads in Grati) which consisted of parity 2 (15 heads), parity 3 (15 heads) and parity 4 (15 heads). Each parity consisted of 2nd lactation (5 heads), 3rd lactation (5 heads) and 4th lactation (5 heads). The variables were daily milk yield, and environmental factors related to milk yield and reproductive performance of dairy cows that is temperature and air humidity, temperature humidity index (THI) and feed consumption. The method of the research was case study. The data had been analyzed by ANOVA and if there were significant influences it would be further tested using Duncan multiple range test. The results showed that the altitude significantly affected milk yield (P<0.05). Average milk yield at lowlands and highlands were 10.17±2.57 liters and 13.10±3.20 liters, but the 2nd, 3rd and 4th parities did not significantly affect milk yield. Another finding showed that the month of lactation significantly affected milk yield (P<0.05). Average milk yield in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th lactations were 12.98±3.61, 11.28±2.76 and 10.63±2.92 litters respectively. Based on the results it was concluded that the altitude and the month of lactation affected milk yield performances of FH dairy cows. It was suggested to improve environmental conditions at lowlands through controlling the temperature and humidity (THI) for not more than 72 so that appropriate for dairy cows and to improve management of productivity, reproductive and feeding practices.   Keywords: milk yield, dairy cow, parity, month of lactation, altitude

Abstract

ABSTRACT The research was conducted at Kemiren Village in Glagah District-Banyuwangi Regency. The objective of the research was to analyze the farmer’s income from Rambon cattle farming practices. Sixty-five farmers were selected and interviewed using purposive random sampling method. Descriptive analysis and input-output analysis were applied to the data available. It was found that the average production cost of Rambon cattle farming was Rp. 4.492.425,26 per year while the average revenue was Rp. 6.203.076,93 per year, so that the average cash profit from Rambon cattle farming was Rp.1.699.606,80 per year. It was concluded that Rambon cattle farming  was not profitable economically because another non cash expenditure i.e family labor did not take into account. Based on the statements above, the research would recommend that farmers should take another non cash expenditure into consideration when they want to sell their cattle (JIIPB 2010 Vol 20 No1:77-85). Abstract

Muscularity is a potential indicator for the selection of more productive cattle. Mapping quantitative trait loci (QTL) for traits related to muscularity is useful to identify the genomic regions where the genes affecting muscularity reside. QTL analysis from a Limousin-Jersey double backcross herd was conducted using QTL Express software with cohort and breed as the fixed effects. Nine QTL suggested to have an association with muscularity were identified on cattle chromosomes BTA 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 12, 14 and 17. The myostatin gene is located at the centromeric end of chromosome 2 and not surprisingly, the Limousin myostatin F94L variant accounted for the QTL on BTA2. However, when the myostatin F94L genotype was included as an additional fixed effect, the QTL on BTA17 was also no longer significant. This result suggests that there may be gene(s) that have epistatic effects with myostatin located on cattle chromosome 17. Based on the position of the QTL in base pairs, all the genes that reside in the region were determined using the Ensembl data base (www.ensembl.org). There were two potential candidate genes residing within these QTL regions were selected. They were Smad nuclear interacting protein 1 (SNIP1) and similar to follistatin-like 5 (FSTL5). Abstract

The aim of the research was to study the effect of cage floor type (wire and litter) and sex ratio on fertility, hatchability and dead embryo of quail. The materials used were 24 male and 84 female quails aged 60 days old. The method of research was experiment which was arranged factorially (2x4) with Randomized Block Design (RBD). The first factor was the type of cage floor which was wire and litter. The second factor was the sex ratio which was 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5. The variables were fertility, hatchability, and dead embryo. Data were analyzed with ANOVA and if there were significant differences among the treatments it would be continued with Duncan Multiple Range Test. The results showed that cage floor type had no effect (P>0.05) on fertility with the average of 80±8,78 to 81±5,37%, hatchability with the average of 82,6±2,46 to 82,93±2,74%, and dead embryo with the average of 17,06±2,74 to 17,37±2,46%. Sex ratio had highly significant effect (P<0.01) on fertility (72,00 to 88,67%) and had no effect (P>0,05) on hatchability (79,78 to 85,79%) and dead embryo (14,21 to 20,21%). There was no interaction effect (P>0.05) between the cage floor type and sex ratio. The conclusion on breeding quail can be used two type of cage floor i.e. litter or wire floor . The sex ratio influenced egg fertility, a higher sex ratio produced lower fertility. It was suggested that in quail‘s breeding practices could be used both floor type of cage which were wire or litter floor, with sex ratio 1 male and 4 female quails. Abstract

Levamisole has been reported can enhance immune response of animals against disease (immunomodulator).Giving levamisole before vaccination Avian Influenza (AI) virus is expected to increase antibody level (humoral immune response) against the disease. These experiments use an experimental method with a completely randomized design.A total of 105 laying chickens were divided into three groups: group one were AI vaccinated without given levamisole hydrochloride; group two were given levamisole hydrochloride 3 days respectively before AI vaccination and group three were given levamisole hydrochloride 7 days respectively before AI vaccination. Levamisole hydrochloride 1mg/50g given at a dose of body weight, orraly through drinking water. Blood sample to measure levels of antibodies that was repeated 3 times ie on day 21, 59, and 80 days. The results showed imunododulator levamisole hydrochloride giving 3 (three) or 7 (seven) days respectively pre Avian Influenza virus vaccination of laying hens did not increase antibody level (humoral immune response). Abstract

The effect of HCG on litter size of rabbits with traditional diet was examined. Twenty four New Zealand White doe’s of 8 to 10 months of age were used. They were allotted to three treatments, namely H0 (no hormone), H1 (with 10 IU of HCG), and H2 (with 20 IU of HCG). The traditional diet consisting of grass fields and fine bran was used. In mid-gestation each treatment performed surgery on 50% of the total number of replications for the observation variable ovulation and embryo, while 50% of the remaining replications maintained continue to get another variable that was a lenght of gestation and the litter size. The results showed that the injection of HCG affected the number of ovulation (P <0.01), the number of embryos (P < 0.01), the number of the litter size (P < 0.01) and the long gestation (P<0.05) significantly. Abstract

In 2009, domestic freshmilk production is about 1.3 million litre per day or equivalent 56,000 tons. That amount only capable to cover about 25% of domestic demand. In the last 2010 freshmilk national production will be 1.41 million litre per day or equivalent 62,000 tons. In 2009, milk consumption per capita per year is 10.3 KG this level is lower than the other member of Asean countries. Three kind of milk product dominated domestic milk market, i.e. powder milk (39%), sweetened condensed milk (35%), pasteurized milk (26%). For increasing domestic milk production, the goverment is necessary to deliver the incentive policy for the dairy farmers. It is necessary to empower the partnership scheme based on common interest between dairy farmers, dairy cooperative and milk processing industry. It is necessary to optimize the performance of external parties that related on milk agribusiness system, i.e. Union of Dairy Cooperative (GKSI), National Dairy Board (DPN), University and NGO. That extenal parties could collectively work to improve bargaining position, economic of scale and economic of scope af all dairy cooperatives in Indonesia.
