This paper discusses the struggle of environmental NGO in protecting the environment. Through the case of PT Indorayon paper pulp and rayon fiber plant in North Sumatra, this paper highlights a new approach of NGOs strategy in protecting environment from industrial exploitation. By combining traditional approach such as protest and demostration with formal and legal channel as well as network among NGOs, the movement has successfully forced PT Indorayon to close down. This paper suggests that the case of NGOs movement against PT Indorayon, could becomea model of social movement in Indonesia, particularly in environmental issues.

Keberadaan sebuah Organisasi Berbasis Masyarakat dalam sebuah entitas negara seringkali disalahgunakan oleh pemegang kekuasaaan untuk mendapatkan image positif tentang tingkaf partisipasi masyarakat dan desentralisasi. Namun masih terdapat perdebatan mengenai apakah Organisasi Berbasis Masyarakat sungguh memainkan peranan penting sebagai wadah untuk menggerakkan masyarakat perkotaan. Tulisan ini akan menganalisa relevansi Organisasi Berbasis Masyarakat dalam melakukan collective action untuk memperjuangkan penyediaan pelayanan publik yang baik.

The trend toward the concentration of media ownership in the hand of few media moguls in many parts of the world has been a subject of criticism. Concentration of media ownership has been one of the main threat to democracy and public sphere. This article discusses the concentration of media ownership in Indonesia and its consequences on democracy. One distinct picture of concentration of media ownership in Indonesia is that some of the owners of the media are politician. This article suggests that in order to tackle the problem there should be a limitation for media ouwnership especially for broadcasting and an effort to reestablish a more democratic media system by introducing public or community media.

Mass media has important role as the fourth pillar in Indonesian democracy system. Media liberalization in post New Order era is aimed to strengthen democracy in Indonesia. However, mass media in post New Order era is in paradoxical situation. This paper examines four important factors related to the role and the position of media in post New Order era. First, it explores the mass media in the arena contestation of interest. Second, it explores the politics of media in the post New Order era. Third, it explains the metamorphosis model of politics. Fourth, it emphasizes the importance of media existence as the fourth pillar of democracy. Furthermore, it argues the strengthening of power-oriented model makes the media paradoxical as the fourth pillar of democracy

As a watch dog, Indonesia mass media now are in dangerous situation. They are trapped between whether they should be servant of the public by doing their duty to bark when watching bad practices in any social institution or they should serve the people who support their existence, namely the conglomerates. This is so due to thefact that mass media now depend mostly on advertising revenues and are controlIed by the conglomerates who have interest in making good images in public eyes. This article discusses the tendency of Indonesia media being controlled by conglomerates through various mechanisms.

Public opinion is one of important elements of democracy. Public opinion is considered as fifth estate of democracy. This paper examines public opinion concept and its position as fifth estate of democracy. It also tries to explore the challenges of public opinion as important factor for democratic political communication in Indonesia. It argues that the absence of public in political communication makes public opinion uneasy to become the fifth estate. This paper acknowledges the importance of public opinion in Indonesian democracy. Moreover, this paper explains how far public opinion draws Indonesian democracy.

Cinema has been long seen as a trans-cultural phenomenon due to its cross-cultural ability. Cinema posits itself to entertain and to educate people from various backgrounds by using its "universal language" âembracing visual and aesthetic aspects. At the same time, cinema has potentials to bring the discourse of identity. The issue of identity will strongly emerge in cinemas, particularly when a country faces a crisis of identity. Many cases show that cinema plays a significant role in contesting the idea of national identity. Moreover, this article aims at highlighting the notion of identity attached in cinema production. By using comparative perspectives between Indonesia and Malaysia, this paper shows how creative spaces are constructed by new generation of Indonesian and Malaysian film makers. Creative spaces which are initiated by cineaste are intended to open the path for critical ideas on national identity. Instead of a fixed state, national identity is defined by young generation of filmmakers more as a contested idea.

The recent development of information technology and commuitication with the presence of new media has affected human behaviors and habit especially in media consumption patterns. Efforts should be made by the conventional mass media, as advertising media, to be in line with the new media development. This article argues that the form of advertising media in the new media environment will be convergence media advertising.

Works on contemporary Indonesian democracy are now dominated by a Schumpeterian perspective which emphasizes method and procedure in achieving political decisions. It can be seen from many studies on procedure of participation, political competition, and development of a more plural party system and re-arrangement of representation institutions. Through a more critical point of view on Schumpeterian mainstream, this article explores economic dimension of Post Soeharto Indonesian electoral democracy. This paper discusses why electoral processes are becoming expensive. It also explores how the more expensive electoral processes bring more political corruption in governmental practices.

The non-voter phenomenon has been generating the controversial perspectives from The New Order to the Post-New Order. This paper discusses two important things: the non-voter based on the political movement perspective and political behavior perspective. First, the non-voter phenomenon has been capitalized by political actors as a political instrument to oppose the political regime. Second, according to political behaviorist science perspective, the non-voter has been analyzing as part of political behavior in national or local election event.
