The central point of this article discusses the liberal fundamentalist movements that operate and establish our current preoccupation with terrorism and its intriguing connections to Islam. Many of the proposed argument refers to the political thought of post-foundationalist which has a core focus on the ways in which Islam is widely regarded as a threat to the power of liberal order and global security. Rather than focusing on the perpetrators of terror actions or radical Muslim activists, this article takes a radically different route in making sense of the hegemonic construction of contemporary terrorism. The thesis of this paper states that Islam is the main target of the current discourse on terrorism. Liberal fundamentalism has sought to re-orientalize Islam through war and global projects of de-radicalization. In this discourse, the relationship between Islam, politics and violence is at stake.

Debates on how to effectively handle the problem of terrorism in Indonesia emerged as the actual threats and attacks occured. Indonesia has already established law on handling terrorism, that was issued by President Megawati Soekarnoputriâs reign in 2002 as the respon to the terrorist bombing at Bali. This paper briefly describes the anti-terrorism policy in Indonesia, the criticisms and notes on the policy, and how the discourse surrounding of the presidentâs option to involve military actively in the handling of terrorism must be viewed in the context of this policy.

After 11 September 2001, hijab and women with hijab have become the new subaltern in the contemporary social and cultural relationships in France. It is interesting to see how political elites, society and women with hijab are seeing those symbols as part of their subject positionâemphasizing the concept of âselfâ and âothersâ. This paper is based on research which employed Critical Discourse method, specifically to examine the level of actorâs positioning in order to elaborate how positioning is used to examine the dynamics of social relation in France, including the various forms of its transformation and its resistence.

The emergence of civil society in Indonesia has always been located in a framework to deal with such a strong state hegemony. Civil society is located as the antithesis to the state. This article argues that civil society in Indonesia is also facing the threat of the existence of civil society itself, so uncivil society emerged as a threat to civil society that comes from civil society itself. In addition, a serious threat to civil society also emerged from the stronger market intervention.

This paper explores the contestation among islamic sub-altern communities and islamic mainstream communities. It discusses two important things. First, the forms of resistance of Jemaat Ahmadiyah Indonesia (JAI) of Yogyakarta toward the practice of minoritization. Second, how the Yogyakarta city, which best known as a tolerance city, facilitate the dialogue among islam communities. This paper conclude that the resistance of JAI of Yogyakarta is a respond toward minoritization employed by islamic mainstream communities. In this case, the JAI of Yogyakarta has succeed in mobilizing  supports from their external network of academic groups and civil society organizations.

In 1981 Clifford Geertz delivered the famous typology of Javanese society. He devided Javanese society into three categories; santri, priyayi and abangan. The relations among them are not only in harmonic but also conflictual relations. This article describes the contestation between abangan and santri in Ngandong Village, Gantiwarno District of Klaten. This paper employs Contentious Politics as major theory to describe what were happened in Ngandong Village. The result is that the contestations between them were happened both in formal events and daily life activities.

Previous studies about jazz in Indonesia tend to generalize and hold a bias against narration from the mainstream, they do not see the different narration from micro scope. Using Yogyakarta jazz community as an entry point, this study shows that jazz community is not a single entity, rather, it involved various identities including educational as well as social background. This paper also indicates contestation among different jazz community in Yogyakarta wich eventually shape the colour of jazz music in the city.

In the development of democratization and the expression of civil and political rights of Malaysian citizens, the pattern of control developed by the regime that is currently in power (Barisan Nasional) for the last 50 years in the mass media began to reap the resistance and tend to be ineffective. Malaysian citizens began to demand the Malaysian government to change the pattern of political information management. In addition, the mass media alone is expected to play a more significant role as an intermediary agent in supporting the process of transparency and accountability of government policy. This article shows that the openness of public information is a prerequisite for political democracy in Malaysia to help the government minimize the mis-management of governance policies, especially in finance and resource management.

This article attempts to map out the current situation of democracy in Indonesia, especially at local levels. This map is based on a simple question: the extent to which 10 years of the democratization process in Indonesia has led the country closer towards effective democratic governance. It concludes that an effective democratic government is far from being realized. Moreover, this article shows a paradox in the development of local politics in Indonesia, on the one hand there has been political liberalization which is assumed as a prerequisite for the realization of democratic governance, but on the other hand, the development of local democracy in Indonesia seemed to stop at its infancy stage. The reasons behind this failure are vary, but in principle related to the symptoms that some scientists called as a "broken linkage" a syndrome in which the forces of modern intermediary fails to perform its functions in linking demos with public affairs.

One of the most important promises of decentralization is to bring government closer to the people through improved public services and decision making. In contrast to this promise, the implementation of decentralization in Indonesia seems to create farther distance between government and the people resulting in the paradox of distance. This article argues that the paradox of distance in decentralized Indonesia is institutionally engineered. It is due mainly to unclear mechanisms for the people to hold government accountable and this stems from two main factors. The first one refers to the politics of functional assignment between central and local governments which benefits central government more than local government. The second factor is the macro institutional arrangements on the relationships between local government and the people where there is almost no way for local people to hold their government accountable or punish the underperformed local government. This article recommends significant transformation in the way the central government manages functional assignment to enable local governments to be more responsive to local people as well as reform of key political arrangements to make them more responsive and accountable to local people.
