Abstract

According to Norziani Dahalan, (2012) students’ involvement is important in online classes. When students communicate verbally with teachers or with friends, their abilities will automatically develop. However, in online classes the researcher found that students were passive and didn't want to calculate their progress, they would be slower. Therefore, this study aims to see how the students’ involvement in EFL online classroom during Covid-19 Pandemic at State Senior High School 1 Bengkalis with the hope that teachers can try to overcome it. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. To measure the data, researchers used observation, video documentation, and interviews. The data analysis technique used in this research is to use qualitative data analysis techniques developed by Miles, (2019) there are includes three activities, namely: data reduction, data presentation, concluding, or levers. The results of this study are: First, students’ involvement with the teacher is passive. Second, students’ involvement with other students. Students can interact with their classmates in the online learning process even though the response is very time-consuming because the teacher or student's internet connection network is sometimes bad and interferes with the learning process. Third, students’ involvement with the material. The involvement of English students with learning materials at SMA N 1 can be said to be good. Because the English teacher teaches well like how he does face-to-face learning in class. The difference is, teacher uses an online application.

Abstract

The title of this thesis is “An Analysis of Cultural contents in English Textbook used by the Eighth Grade Students of Junior High School 03 Bangkinang”. This research was conducted based on some problems related to the cultural contents dissemination in the English Textbook. Absolutely, the objective of national education in Indonesia is set based on the cultural value and ideology of the nation. Thus, English textbook evaluation need to be conducted in order to know the appropriateness of the contents in the textbook. This research consisted of two formulations of the problem: how are the cultural contents disseminated in the English textbook entitled ‘English in Focus for Grade VIII (SMP/MTs), and what are the cultural contents disseminated in the English textbook. The objectives of this research are to know about how the cultural contents are disseminated in the English textbook and what are the cultural contents disseminated in the English textbook. The data of the research were collected from reading passages and also pictures in the English Textbook which was published by National Education Department. This research is a descriptive qualitative but the element of quantitative in the form of how the data are counted in a percentage has also been used. In order to know what cultural contents are disseminated in the English Textbook, the cultural contents were categorized into the source or local culture, the target culture, and the international culture (Cortazzi & Jin, 1999). Moreover, in order to know how the cultural contents were disseminated in the English Textbook, the cultural contents were categorized into four senses; the aesthetic sense, the sociological sense, the semantic sense, and the pragmatic sense (Adaskou, Britten & Fahsi, 1990).The research found that local or source culture was predominant in the textbook. The cultural contents of (43.75%) referred to the local culture, (40.62%) referred to the international culture, and (21.87%) referred to the target culture. Additionally, in order to know how the cultural contents are disseminated in textbook, the research found that generally the cultural contents were disseminated by the aesthetic sense (46.15%), the sociological sense (30.76%), and the pragmatic sense (23.07%), while the semantic sense was not found. Based on the findings, it could be concluded that the contents of English textbook in focus for grade VIII has already successfully achieved the national education goal. National characters or national culture should be input in education field.

Abstract

TOEFL test is one of the requirements for the students of English Study Program of State Islamic University of Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau (UIN Suska Riau) to finish their study at S1 Degree.  Based on the researcher’s observation, most of the students did not pass the TOEFL Test.  The students followed the test for several times till they reached the passing grade. It seemed that the students got difficulties in answering the TOEFL Test. So, in this research the researcher focused on analyzing the students’ difficulties in answering the Written Expression section of the TOEFL test.  The aims of this research were to identify the categories of items in the Written Expression section of the TOEFL test which were difficult for the fourth semester students of English Study Program UIN Suska Riau, and to identify which categories of items that were easy for the students. This research was a quantitative research. The researcher analyzed the categories of items tested in TOEFL test, especially in the Written Expression section. There were 12 categories of items tested in the Written Expression section of the TOEFL test based on Longman Preparation Course for the TOEFL Test by Deborah Phillips (2000: 144-221). The categories consisted of subject-verb agreement, parallel structure, comparative and superlative, the use of the verbs, the forms of the verbs, passive verbs, nouns, pronouns, adjectives and adverbs, articles, prepositions and usages   The result of the research showed that all of the categories of items were difficult for the students. None of the categories of items were easy for the students. The most difficult category for the students was usages. So, in general, the students extremely got difficulties in answering the Written Expression section of the TOEFL test.

Abstract

This research was proposed from the problem of students writing ability in the descriptive text of the eight-grade students at MTs N 1 Pekanbaru. They were not able to write in English well. The objective of this research was to find out whether there was or nor the significant effect of using cartoon media. The design of this research was Quasi-Experimental Research. The Population of this research was all of the eighth-grade students. The total number of the population was 350 students. The writer used a cluster sampling technique by taking only two classes as a sample; VIII.1 that co­nsisted of 35 students as experimental class and VIII.2 consisted of 35 students as control class. So the number of samples from two classes was 70 students. To analyze the data, the writer used an independent sample t-test. Based on the analysis of the t-test Formula, the sig. value is 0.000. It could be stated that 0.000<0.05. Then, the effect size is 0.387 categorized into a moderate level. The writer concluded that there is a significant effect of using cartoon media on students’ writing ability in the descriptive text at MTs N 1 Pekanbaru. And the biggest effect occurred on the writing ability where the effect size is 0.14 categorized into large effect.

Abstract

The main focus of this research is to investigate whether there was a significant effect of using Multimedia Reading Materials on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at SMA Negeri 12 Pekanbaru. This research had two variables, Multimedia Reading Materials as an independent variable and students’ reading comprehension as a dependent variable. This research was a quasi-experimental research. The writer selected two classes from total eleven  classes by using cluster random sampling technique: experimental and control class. There were 70 students as sample out of 391 students. In collecting the data, the writer used multiple choice and short-answer question test. In analyzing the data, the writer used independent sample t-test formula calculated by using SPSS 25 version continued by using eta-square formula. Based on the analysis of t-test Formula, the sig. value is 0.000. It could be stated that 0.000<0.05. Then, the effect size is 0.41 categorized into moderate level.  The writer concluded that there is significant effect of using Multimedia Reading Materials on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text at SMA Negeri 12 Pekanbaru. And the biggest effect was occurred on the fourth component of reading comprehension that is identifying the meaning of words where the effect size is 0.14 categorized into large effect.

Abstract

The researcher’s conducted a research at State Islamic Senior High School 1 Pekanbaru. The formulation the problems are : How is the students reading habit? How is the students’ ability of writing narrative text? Is there any significant correlation between students reading habit and their ability in writing narrative text? The design of this reseach study was correlational research. The total number of population was 262 students. The researcher used purposive sampling by taking only one class as sample 34. To analyze the data, the researcher used questionnaire and written test. Questionnaire is used to collect the data about students reading habit. The written test of narrative text was intended to find out students writing ability of narrative text. Based on data analysis, the writer found that the average score of the students’ questionnaire for students reading habit is 60.1. it is categorized into good level. students writing ability is 72.4, the score is categorized good level. the correlation between students  reading habit and their ability of writing applied to the sample is 0.629, and consulting to the critical values of the r Product Moment with 95% confidence level and the number of subjects 34 was 0.339. Therefore, the writer concludes that there is a significant positive correlation between students reading habit (X) and their ability of writing narrative text (Y).

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the eleventh grade students’ error in using preposition in writing narrative text at SMK Tunas Karya Pekanbaru. This study was a descriptive research, the subject of this research was the eleventh grade students’ of SMK Tunas Karya Pekanbaru while the object of this research was students’ error in using preposition in writing narrative text. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to take the sample, there were 35 students as sample from 96 students. To collect the data the researcher used test. The test was conducted to know what types of errors were made by the students when they used preposition in writing narrative text. The result of the error analysis process showed that students committee error into three types: omission, insertion and selection. From the calculation of the data, error of insertion is the most frequent errors that done by the eleventh grade students of SMK Tunas Karya Pekanbaru with the percentage 41.9%. Moreover it is followed by error of omission with percentage 30.9%, and error of selection with percentage 27.1%.

Abstract

The goal of this research was to get information whether the students’ reading comprehension could be improved through Internet using at the Fourth Semester Students of School of  Foreign Language at Persada Bunda. The cases were some students’ reading comprehension still low or below standard passing of test. The research was classroom action research. The participants of this research were the Fourth Semester Students of School of  Foreign Language at Persada Bunda. They are consisted of 12 students. This research was held into two cycles, each cycle consisted of three meetings. The research data were divided into two major types namely, quantitative and qualitative data. The quantitative data were taken through reading comprehension test. The qualitative data were collected through observation, and field notes. The result of the analysis showed that the students grades improved after internet using. The improvement happened on each cycle at the research. The improvement of students’ reading comprehension scores were influenced by factors such as motivation, interest, and classroom atmosphere. Thus, it was concluded that internet using can improve students’ reading comprehension. The internet using  also increases students’ speed in reading comprehension that can be used by students of School of Foreign Language at Persada Bunda. Therefore, the internet using is recommended to be used by the students and lecturer in teaching and learning reading comprehension at the School of Foreign Language of Persada Bunda.

Abstract

 This research is a correlational research, which aims at finding out the correlation between self assessment and speaking ability. There were two variables used in this research, was variable X (Self Assessment) and variable Y (Speaking Ability). The subject of this research was the eighth grade students at Junior High School 16 Pekanbaru whereas the object of this research was the correlation between self assessment and speaking ability. The population of this research was 197 students. To choose the sample, the researcher used simple random sampling technique and got 40 students as the sample. In collecting the data, the researcher used questionnaire for self assessment and oral test for speaking ability. From the data analysis which had been done by using SPSS 20.0 version, it could be seen that there was a significant correlation between self assessment and speaking ability. It could be shown that the probability of score sig.t is 0.000, smaller than the significant alpha of 0.05 (sig.t < 0.05). It means that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. In other words, there is a significant correlation between self assessment and speaking ability.

Abstract

The problem of this research was to know how well the students’ of SMPN 1 Singingi in Understanding personal pronouns in a text at SMPN 1 Singingi is. The research was conducted at SPMN 1 Singingi from Februari 3rd to Februari 27th, 2021.  The population of this research  was 40 students of two classes and researcher took 20 students as the sample. This research was quantitaive- descriptive research. Researcher used fill-in-the-blank text test to collect the data. In analyzing the data, researcher collected and classified each item of the test and multiplied them by standardizing the scores that had been determined before. The next step was counted the percentage of the level of the students’ ability in using personal pronouns. From the research findings, researcher found that the test was gained 1545 from total scores of all the students who joined the test. The average of students' scores was 77.25 and the sum of the total scores was 85%. It means that most of the students did well on the test and understood personal pronouns in reading text.
