Abstract

The aim of this experiment was to evaluate the performance of fat-tailed rams fed complete feedbased oil palm fronds (OPF). This experiment was arranged in Completely Randomized Design (CRD)with 5 treatments and 4 replications i.e. 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of OPF substituting fields grass incomplete feed for A, B, C, D and E treatments, respectively. Twenty fat-tailed rams were fed twice at08.00 and 14.00 with pellet of complete feed for 4 months. The result of this experiment showed thatOPF significantly influenced nutrient consumption, average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency ratio(FER). Oil palm fronds significantly affected (P<0.05) fat-tailed rams’s dry matter intake (DMI), organicmatter intake (OMI), crude protein intake (CPI), ADG and FER. The highest DMI, OMI, CPI, ADG, andFER of fat-tailed rams was in C treatment and significantly different from the others. It was concludedthat C treatment was the best treatment which can give the best fat-tailed rams performance. The OPFcan be used to replace the field grass as feed up to 75% proportion in complete feed and could increasethe performance and productivity of fat-tailed rams.

Abstract

This study aimedto identify the SNP g.643G>Aof MYF5 genethen associate it with body weight and body size measurements in Bali cattle. Blood samples were collectedfrom 80 bali cattle at BPTU-HPT Denpasar Bali. Data on phenotypic properties observed included; birth weight, live weight, average daily gain, body length, chest depth, withers height, hip height, and heart girth. Polymorphismof the MYF5 gene was identifiedusing the PCR-RFLP method. Association of MYF5 genotypes with body weight and body size measurementswas performed using General Linear Model by SAS 9.4 program. MYF5│MspI gene was polymorphic with three genotypes: AA, AG, and GG. Genotype frequency of AA, AG and GG were 0.04 (3), 0.30 (24), and 0.65 (53), respectively. Allele frequencies were 0.19 and 0.81 for A and G alleles, respectively. Gene frequency analysis showed that Bali cattle at BPTU-HPT Denpasar was in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium. Association of MYF5│MspI gene with body weight and body measurement were not significantly different. SNP g.643G>A could not be used as a genetic marker for the body weight and body size measurements in Bali cattle.

Abstract

This research was done to measure the added value of goat and sheep with cut and carry systemand influencing factors of goat/sheep productivity and to measure the added value of manure to palmproductivity. The research was done in Deli Serdang Regency by determining two districts as researcharea: Tanjung Morawa District and Bangun Purba District. Location was determined by purposivesampling technique based on population of small ruminants and area of oil palm plantation in bothdistricts. Sample consisted of 50 goat farmers and 50 sheep farmers. Results indicated that farmers have18 to 24 heads of goats or sheep. Performance of goat and sheep reproduction tended to similar togenereral performance. Amount of doe, feed from palm oil and intercropped plant, livestock type andlocation influence significantly at livestock productivity (P<0.01). Goat contributed manure 16.86% and11.26% of total palm trees in Tanjung Morawa and Bangun Purba, respectively, while sheep contributedmanure 21.49% and 22.56% of total palm trees, respectively. Therefore, it was necessary to increasepopulation of livestock, to increase technology and diversification of production. It may be done by establishing partnership with local government, animal of science office and private corporation .

Abstract

This research was carried out to make a difference and to predict genetic distance some sheep thatare genetically related to each other based on the body size measurements. Nineteen bodies size of 323sheeps of five sheep breeds; namely Barbados Black Belly Cross (BC), Garut Local (GL), GarutComposite (GC), Sumatra Composite (SC) and St. Croix Cross (SCC) were measured. Analysis ofvariance and canonical discriminant analysis, Mahalanobis distance, plotting canonical and dendogramwere performed using PROC GLM, PROC CANDISC, PROC CLUSTER and PROC TREE of SASsoftware ver. 9.0. Index Length, Width Slope, Depth Slope, Balance and Cumulative Index of GC sheepwere significantly higher than the four other breeds. Canonical discriminant analysis successfully coulddifferentiate among the five sheep breeds. All five breed were divided into two groups: the first groupconsisted of SCC, SC and BC; and the second group consisted of the GL and GC. The results of geneticdistance estimation showed that the SCC had a value of sheep genetic distance closest to SC (10.83) andBC (27.98), while GL had the closest distance to GC (66.60). The tail width, horn base circumference,horn length (canonical 1) and variable length of the tail and body length (canonical 2) were the breeddifferentiation variable in this study.

Abstract

Farmer households generally operate food crops and livestock subsectors that have not fully implemented well, so an optimal farming has not been achieved. This study aimed to analyze optimation of cow-calf beef cattle and paddy farming integration and simulation changing in input prices and the usage of resources to the optimal model. Survey method was used in the research in Grobogan Regency by determining Wirosari District and Purwodadi District. Quota sampling method is used to determine the number of respondents without counting the population as a sampling frame. The number of respondents in each district was 40 farmers so the total respondent was 80 farmers. Data were analyzed using linear programing. Results showed that optimum conditions of integration were achieved in 0.45 ha land, 2.75 AU of cow-calf beef cattle with maximum income of IDR 52,112,440/year. The simulation results regarding in changing in input usege indicated that the addition of 0.25% land area gives a change in scale of cow-calf beef cattle by 0.018% and income of 14.78%. In conclusion, integration optimation was achieved on 0.4 5ha land, 2.75 UT cow-calf beef cattle and optimal solution simulations indicated that farmers have the ability to develop their farming.

Abstract

The purposes of this study were to 1) identify the size and shape of cranium of three breeds ofCentral Java local goats (Kejobong, Kacang and Ettawa Grade), 2) examine the effectiveness ofmultivariate analysis of cranial measurement and 3) estimate genetic distance among three local breedsof goat. The material used was cranium from female Kejobong, Kacang and Ettawa Grade goats, agedfor about 4 years (determined on the basis based on eruption of teeth), the number of specimens were30; 10 and 10, respectively. Twenty seven cranial measurements used to data observed, multivariateanalysis of GLM, CANDISC, PRINCOMP and DISCRIM were used to analysis all data observed.UPGMA of MEGA 5 was used to illustrate the distance among breeds. Results showed that EttawaGrade tended to show the largest size, followed by Kejobong and Kacang goats. Kejobong goat showedsmall cranium size with large cranium shape. Different things was found in Kacang goats in whichcranium size and cranium shape are relatively small. Kacang breed showed the smaller size (PrincipalComponent I or PC-1 = -2) compared to Ettawa Grade (PC-I = 3) and Kejobong goat (PC-I = -1).Analysis for classifying three breeds of local goat resulted in high accuracy (100%) as indicated by 0%of erroneous level (0%). Kejobong goat was close to in the genetic relationship to Kacang goatcompared to Ettawa Grade goat.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of hatchery waste meal (HWM) as a whole or without shell (shell-less) in the diet on nutrient retention and performance of quails. The study used 500 female quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) aged 30 days with an average initial body weight of 94.75±4.17 gr. The quails were randomly allocated to five dietary treatments in a completely randomized design with 5 replicates of 20 quails. The dietary treatments were: Control = basal diet, Whole 4% = 96% basal diet + 4% whole HWM, Whole 8% = 92% basal diet + 8% whole HWM, Shell-less HWM 4% = 96% basal diet + 4% of shell-less HWM, Shell-less HWM 8% = 92% basal diet + 8% of shell-less HWM. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, when the treatments indicated significant effect it was continued with Duncan’s Multiple Range Test. Quails fed HWM up to 8% improved (P<0.05) their crude fat retention, apparent metabolizable energy, calcium consumption and calcium retention (P<0.05). In addition, HWM in the ration increased the performance, and also yolk and albumen weight, but decreased (P<0.05) yolk and albumen index. It can be concluded that HWM improved performance and nutrient retention of quails.
