Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the fermentability and nutrient digestibility of concentrate feed containing Indigofera zollingeriana using in vitro technique. Randomized complete block design was used on 3 types of concentrate feed and 4 groups (replicates) of goat's rumen liquid. The concentrate feeds were R1, R2 and R3 containing I. zollingeriana at 0 (control), 20 and 40%, respectively. Variables observed were total gas production, in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), organic matter (IVDOM), and crude protein (IVDCP), volatile fatty acid (VFA) profiles and NH3 concentration. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). Results showed that there was no significant effect of R3 on IVDMD, IVDOM and IVDCP as compared to R1 and R2. However, there was significant difference (P<0.05) of the parameters between R1 and R2 (P<0.05). There was no significant effect (P<0.05) of different Indigofera levels on total gas production. The partial VFA of each concentrate feeds was not significantly different, but the percentage of acetic acids of concentrates containing I. zollingeriana were higher than those of control (P<0.05). The concentration of rumen NH3 of R2 was lower than R1 and R3 (P<0.05) even though the IVCPD of R2 was higher than R1. It could be concluded that the inclusion of I. zollingeriana as concentrate feed ingredient at 20% maximum level .

Abstract

An investigation was conducted on beef carcasses, aimed at identifying the growth patterns of wholesalecuts and their tissues in steer during fattening phase. This study involved 69 grass-fed steers with a liveweightrange of 300 to 600 kg. They had entered, or were progressing along, their fat deposition phase. Anallometric model (Huxley, 1932) was used to study the growth patterns of carcass tissues within wholesalecuts. In general, The growths of muscle and fat within wholesale cuts followed similar patterns. Somedifferences in growth patterns between muscle and fat were identified on the dorsal region. The growth impetusfor fat moved from the thoracic backwards to the lumbar region which was the reverse of the growth impetus formuscle. Differential growth patterns occurred between intermuscular (IM) fat and subcutaneous (SC) fat. WithIM fat, its growth movement was similar to that of total fat where there was a concentration of growth in thelumbar area and thin flank as side weight increased. With SC fat, there were growth movements from the ventralregion to the dorsal region of the carcass. Bone growth within wholesale cuts showed a less clear pattern.

Abstract

This study was aimed : (i) to know the subsystem implementation and agribusiness planning inbeef cattle fattening; (ii) to count the profit of beef cattle farming; (iii) to analyze the effect ofagribusiness subsystem implementation and agribusiness planning to beef cattle fattening profit. Thisstudy was carried out using survey method and the elementary units were feedlot farmers. The samplewas determined by Purposive Quota Sampling Method on 112 respondents spread across five regencies,namely Blora, Rembang, Grobogan, Wonogiri, and Boyolali. Data were collected from primary andsecondary sources. The data analysis used quantitative descriptive and inferential statistics method,which include scoring, financial, and multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that : (i) theimplementation of agribusiness subsystem (including preproduction subsystem, marketing, andagribusiness support services) and agribusiness planning were not so good category, while the cattlefarming subsystem was moderate category; (ii) the average of farming scale in each feedlot farmer was2.95 head of cattle with the profit rate was IDR 1,044,719 per fattening period during 6.68 months(equivalent to IDR 156,395 per month); (iii) agribusiness subsystem and agribusiness planning hadsignificant impact on feedlot farmer profit simultaneously, but preproduction subsystem and theagribusiness support services subsystem partially had a significant impact on feedlot farmer profit.

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the discrepancy in individual potential of Kebumen Ongole Grade cattle farmers, and analyze spatial grouping based on the farmers’ individual potential. The study was conducted using survey method among cattle farmers in 6 districts which are the development centers of Kebumen Ongole Grade cattle in Kebumen Regency (District of Puring, Petanahan, Klirong, Mirit, Bulus Pesantren, and Ambal). One hundred Kebumen Ongole Grade cattle farmers were selected using multistage sampling method. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Theil Entropy Index analysis to describe the level of discrepancy of farmers’ individual potential. The cattle farmers have relatively sufficient individual potential with total score 521.14. Based on Theil Entropy Index, discrepancy in individual potential was relatively high (5.29). Partially, the cattle farmers’ discrepancy was relatively high in the provision of production input (6.06), provision of work force potential (6.60), and basic potential (5.11). The production facilities need to be made available in order to accelerate farmers’ individual potential and to reduce the discrepancy in individual potential among farmers. The western part of the cattle development area of Kebumen Regency must be given priority to realize the uniformity of the potential of individual farmers.

Abstract

The objective of this study were to predict carcass quality characteristics in Bali cattle using ultrasound imagery. The Number of samples were 81 heads of Bali cattle consist of bulls (62 heads) and cows (19 heads) with various age ranging from 1 to 6 years were collected their body weight and carcass qualities including backfat thickness (BF), longissmus dorsi thickness (LD), rump fat thickness (RF), rump thickness (RT), marbling score (MS) and the percentage of intramuscular fat (PIF). Those were estimated using ultrasound performed on 4.5-6,5 MHz frequency with depth of 8.8-13 cm. The BF, LD, MS and PIF measurement were applied on 12th-13th ribs, while the RT and RF measurement were conducted between ischium and illium. MS determination was calculated using Aus-Meat standard, while PIF was analysis based on Deaton and Rouse (2000). Body weight and carcass quality among traits were analyzed using descriptive and correlation procedures. The results showed that performance of body weight and carcass quality differs between Bali bulls and Bali cows, as well as among the age variations. Correlation analyses among traits (body weight and carcass quality) showed strong positive correlation (P<0.05) ranging from 0.291 to 0.938. In conclusion, ultrasound imaging method could be used to estimate carcass quality characteristics in Bali cattle.

Abstract

Fifteen Jawarandu male goats were used to study the effect of different portion of sugarcanebagasse in diets on some parameters of protein metabolism. Goats had average of body weight of 18 kgand aged at 18 months. Animals were housed in metabolic cages and were alloted to a completelyrandomized design receiving three experimental diets with sugarcane bagasse portions of 15, 25, and35% (dry matter basis), respectively. After eight weeks of adjustment period to experimental diets andenvironment, each group of treatment was subjected to ten days of digestion trial, and followed bycollection of rumen liquid samples. Parameters observed were feed digestibility, nitrogen retention,ruminal feed fermentation, and excretion of urinary allantoin to estimate microbial protein synthesis.Data were tested using one way analysis of variance, and followed by Duncan’s mulitiple range test. Drymatter and protein intakes lowered (P<0.05) as the increasing of sugarcane bagasse in diets. Proteindigestibility and retention were unaffected by the treatment of bagasse portion. The dietary treatment didnot change ruminal ammonia, total VFA, acetate, propionate, and butyrate concentrations. Microbialnitrogen synthesis and efficiency of microbial nitrogen synthesis were unaffected by the dietarytreatment.

Abstract

The estimation of growth curves and mature size of ten body measurements, namely withers height,hip height, body length, chest girth, chest depth, chest width, rump length, hip width, thurl width, andpin bone width, were studied in Bali bulls and heifers at the age of 12, 15, 18, 21 and 24 months. 108bulls and 146 heifers at Bone district and 152 bulls and 110 heifers at Barru district, South Sulawesi,Indonesia were measured. The Brody growth function was fitted to each animal’s records and leastsquaresanalysis were used to investigate the effects of place, sex, and age to growth curve and maturesize of body measurements of Bali bulls and heifers. The result showed that the growth of bodymeasurements of Bali cattle until 24 months of age were still increasing and not reaching the mature sizeyet. The place, sex and age factors were significantly affected to the growth of body measurements ofBali cattle.

Abstract

The research objectives was to analyze the farmer’s decision in selecting breed of bull frozen semen for Artificial Insemination (AI) and determine the factors influencing the decision. There were five bull frozen semen options which simulated in this research, such as Simmental, Limousine, Ongole Grade (Peranakan Ongole / PO), Brahman, and other option. ”Other” option was used if the farmer did not recognize what breed of frozen semen was inseminated to their cow. Farmers must choose only one option of bull frozen semen that suitable for their cow. This study was conducted by collecting data using questionaire from 400 beef cattle’s farmers in Central Java Province and Yogyakarta Province. Respondents were selected by multistage random sampling technique. Descriptive statistical analysis and multinomial logistic regression analysis was used in this study The results revealed that 42% of farmers were more interested in inseminating their cows with bull semen from Simmental, and 30.75% of farmers were more interested in Limousin. Other variables such as family member, AI’s cost, land ownership, cow breed which lastly being inseminated, geographical factor, and farmer’s knowledge about the inseminatorswere variables that determine farmer’s decision process.

Abstract

The g.422C>T nucleotide variations in the 5’ untranslated region (5’UTR) of TG gene (called as TG5) has been reported to be associated with level in intramuscular fat (IMF) content or marbling in beef cattle. The objective of this study was to confirm genetic polymorphism of TG5 gene in Bali cattle populations from three different regions as the main resources of Bali cattle in Indonesia. A total of 200 head of Bali cattle have been performed genotyping on TG5 gene using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment lenght polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method and sequence analysis. Results of the study confirmed that TG5 was monomorphic in Bali cattle wherever their origin regions. Moreover, nine candidate SNPs were detected within 5’UTR of TG gene in Bali cattle compared to Genbank reference sequences, although no SNP variations among Bali cattle sample studied. The new other genetic markers within an entire TG gene suggested to be explored and verified for their polymorphisms in Bali cattle. The nine candidate SNPs were also required further verification and validation in a larger sample to be regarded as new SNPs between Bali cattle and Genbank reference sequences.

Abstract

Land use conflict among agriculture and animal husbandry caused beef cattle must be keptintensively. The objective of this research was to identify adoption level of beef cattle intensive rearingand some factors that affecting farmers adoption. Research design was survey with 90 respondents froma total of 578 farmers. Data were obtained through interview and observations using questionnare withclose question. The data were analyzed with multiple regression models. The level of intensive rearingadoption (dependent variable) was measured based on housing system, feeding, reproduction, healthmanagement and feces utilization. While, independent variables were based on the intensity ofextension, relative adventage, subjective norm, control of behavior, attitude, age, land area and scale ofbusiness. Level of housing system, feeding, reproduction and health management were in the medium level (average >50% of farmers), while feces utilization was in the lowest level. Factors that positivelyaffected farmer adoption in Wajo regency were the ability of the farmers to control their behavior(p<0.01), farmer position in social community or subjective norm and relative adventage weresignificant with p<0.05. Another case with contact to the extension, age, attitude, land area and scale ofbusiness were no significant affected farmers adoption. To enforce adoption of intensive rearingtechnology, extension program should be developed to influence farmers psychology such profit level ofintensive rearing and convenience on cattle handling.
