Abstract

What is actually involved in learning a foreign language? What kinds of knowledge and skill to be mastered? The answer to these questions deals with language competence, that is, the knowledge of the language and the ability to use that knowledge to interpret and produce meaningful texts appropriate to the situation in which they are used. It corresponds with Ellis’s (1996: 74) statement that the goal of learning a foreign language “is concerned with the ability to use language in communicative situations” and the point of language teaching is to help the students communicate or to develop what Hymes (1972) referred to as “communicative competence”.

The Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (Oxford, 1990) was used as an instrument to collect data from the two groups of IELTS preparation class. The results revealed that respondents tend to use meta-cognitive strategies as their main LLS with females being the more active users than males, while language major students used strategies more often than those who study in science and social studies. Participants who had good score in IELTS employed social strategies, besides affective strategies used by students who were less proficient in English. The findings have implications for students and teachers of IELTS class to utilize appropriate LLS in language learning.

Abstract

AbstractParagraph writing in the context of Academic Writing in a number of academies and universities in Indonesia is considered a skill whose mastery needs reasoning or logical thinking besides knowledge of grammatical rules, lexis, and also ability to translate from bahasa Indonesia into English effectively and efficiently.Logical thinking should be exercised ever since the student writers begin their initial up to the final phase of writing a paragraph. They may not necessarily pour down their ideas in sentences the way they like. This is because first of all they have to determine the main idea, also known as topic sentence, that needs formulating from the general subject or topic that is still too broad to be developed. To formulate the topic sentence, they have to exercise their logical thinking. Then, the main idea has to be supported by supporting sentences which are related to one another. The process of writing supporting sentences and their interrelationship should also be based on logical thinking. Finally, the paragraph is closed by means of a sentence which concludes the discussion of the whole paragraph.A paragraph that flows smoothly or, in other words, is readable is, without any doubt, the one that is effective and sensible.

In applying cartoon media, the teacher asks students to describe items based on a cartoon, and then after the students have described things such as colour and form. They are asked to compare stories to see which ones are closest to real story and retell the stories what student write. Using this method helps for several reasons. First, the method attacts students’ attention. Second, visual material have been shown to be helpful because they are engaging.

Abstract

Linguistic construction embodies information that is plausible to be modified in certain context when the speaker wants to emphasize on certain aspect. This is the nature of language users and the construction they produce. Each language is assumed to possess its own various ways of structuring the information spoken or written by the language user. English, for example, which is known as fixed word order language with SVO order has its various ways of structuring the information delivered by the speaker to the interlocutor. Preposing, postposing, and argument reversal are three best ways to indicate which information is prominent in the speaker’s mind so that the hearer will have the same concept as the speaker. Those are included as the alternative ways to construct sentence and propose syntactic choices to the speaker. Information structure has been one of the most intriguing fields of study involving both syntactic and pragmatic analyses. Hence, this paper aims at describing the noncanonical constructions in English and how they work to package information by using the interface of both disciplines.

It is commonly hypothesized that ESP teachers require more than that of general English instructors are capable of in language teaching-related pedagogy. However, limited numbers of such studies have been conducted in Indonesia as a potentially developing country in the world. This quantitative study aims to portray ESP teachers' perceived qualifications, benefits of the program instruction, and its relevance to meet the challenges of the globalization. Initial findings of this study reveal that almost all of the respondents acknowledged the necessity of ESP teachers to demonstrate capacity in educational principle, language learning theory, Linguistics competence, material and media design, classroom management, intercultural understanding, language assessment, and classroom-based research inquiry. It is perceived that successful ESP teaching is significantly required for graduates to excel the job market, increase professionalism at work, and facilitate the nation competitive edge. Furthermore, ESP programs are considered relevant to meet the present and future challenges of globalization. More elaborative findings will be obtained, specifically addressing difference-variance of perceptions according to respondents’ education background and teaching experience.
