Abstract

In 2012 the Directorate General of Higher Education of Indonesia required all higher education institutions to implement the Curriculum of Higher Education. As a part of higher education institutions, English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta has been implementing this curriculum for five years.  Curriculum of Higher Education has shifted the old paradigm of teacher-centered learning to the new pedagogical approach called student-centered learning. The implementation of the Curriculum of Higher Education necessitates all study programs to alter their curriculum oriented to produce competent graduates. English Education Department of Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta has also been making attempts to incorporate the Muhammadiyah values proposed by its founder, KH. Ahmad Dahlan. The research is aimed at exploring how the Ahmad Dahlan’s’ values are implemented in the CHE setting at the EED of UMY. The data were collected by means of interviews with a head of department and two lecturers, teaching observation, and document analysis and focus group discussion with 33 students.  The research found that the principles proposed by Ahmad Dahlan including the curriculum structure, pedagogical techniques, and character education had been successfully incorporated in the implementation of CHE and the Ahmad’s Dahlan values’ correspond to the CHE principles.

Abstract

AbstractTeaching second or foreign language is not easy. Many researchers believe that the teachers should know several methods and teaching strategies in teaching language; such as, communicative language teaching, the grammar-translation method, the direct method, the audio-lingual method, the silent way, the suggestopedia, communicative language learning, total physical response, natural approach, and many more. In early 1980s, many educators assumed that communicative approach is a better way to teach second language to the students and this approach incorporated into the classroom (Brown, 2001). This essay will explore what communicative language teaching is and describe the factors led to its emergence in English language teaching.

A compilation of short stories written by Alexander McCall Smith entitled The Girl Who Married a Lion and the translation by Sari Kusuma entitled Gadis yang Menikahi Seekor Singa is interesting to discuss because it contains many stories, including fairy tales and fables. Hence, the short stories are fully loaded with cultural aspect, which thereby affects the way the work is translated. Thus, this article is to reveal the translation types, structure, and strategies applied by the translator in translating the short stories. Keywords: translation types, translation strategy, Alexander McCall

Abstract

Anxious students are often concerned about the impressions that others form of them. When such students are confronted in a classroom with a learning situation that makes them uncomfortable, they may choose to withdraw from the activity. Some learners believe they cannot perform in English and consequently form negative expectations, which in turn lead to decreased effort and the avoidance of opportunities to enhance their communication skills. The goal of this study was to identify those factors, as perceived by students, that may contribute to anxiety, and those factors that may reduce anxiety in an attempt to understand more fully the role that anxiety may play in learning a foreign language.

Abstract

Education topics and talks on pre-service teacher training program and Lesson Study have individually been discussed and appeared in many journals among disciplines. However, the empirical studies on the issue about the connection between them and how they can relate and benefit one another are limited and rarely done. This study aims at investigating pre-service English teachers’ perspectives towards Lesson Study, particularly in terms of their knowledge, experience, and plan for it. This study involved seventeen pre-service teachers (PST) in a teacher education faculty in Indonesia who participated as the research subject. Empirical data were collected through interview and Focus Group Discussion (FGD). Data analysis used a descriptive qualitative method. Results of the study showed that: (1) In terms of knowledge about Lesson Study, all PSTs have good knowledge about Lesson Study. In addition, they also show positive response towards Lesson Study, (2) In terms of experience with Lesson Study, most of the PSTs have had experiences with Lesson Study activities. The experiences mostly occurred when they were being directly involved in Lesson Study activities as students, (3) In terms of the plan to do Lesson Study, the majority of the PSTs are planning to take and do Lesson Study in the future, especially when they become real teachers at schools.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research aimed to improve English listening skill through text-based materials at the grade V students of SD Muhammadiyah Kedungbanteng II. This was a classroom action research, which used the cycle model of Kemmis and McTaggart (2000), consisting of three steps, (1) plan, (2) act and observe, and (3) reflect. The research instruments were observation,  fieldnote,  interview, and listening tests. The reliability of the data was obtained by using the triangulation method. The data were analyzed by using an interactive model developed by Miles and Hubberman (1984). The results of the research showed that the English listening skill of students improved by using text-based materials. Based on the process,  the students’’  attention to the classroom activities improved and they enjoyed all classroom activities well. From the product of listening, the improvement can be seen from the result of students’’ listening test. The mean score of the pre-action test is 55.05, while the mean score of the post-action test is 76.1.  Keywords: text-based materials, listening skill

Abstract

AbstractCommunicative language teaching leads language learners to be able to use the language in real-life or real-life like situations. Through the learning activities, the learners are facilitated to use the language for communicative performance in the target language. Class performance is one of the activities enabling the learners to use their knowledge and to apply their skills in the demanded communication event(s). The performance provides a situation where learners can develop different skills. During the performance tasks, the teacher can observe, monitor and at the same time, the teacher can get ideas to prepare an authentic assessment. To deal with these pedagogical issues in teaching English to young learners (TEYL), the writer of this paper discusses the benefits of performance, the practice of class performance in TEYL and some insights for a performance and authentic assessment.

Abstract

This paper is written based on the findings of an Action Based Research aimed at knowing whether the implementation of an online Process Writing Portfolio Program (PWPP) is effective in improving the long distance students’ writing ability. The subjects of the study are the students of Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Universitas Terbuka, at Yogyakarta Long Distance Learning Program Unit. The data are collected from three cycles of the program implementation via email : sudilah@ut.ac.id. Each cycle consists of 4 stages, the plan, action, observation, and reflection. Grades of each cycle were taken from 4 kinds of activities; brainstorming, first draft writing, revising and editing, and final copy. The score increase from cycle to cycle is used to measure the improvement of the students’ writing ability. For this purpose the writer uses Wilcoxson Signed Ranks Test and Scoring Scale for Composition. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of online Process Writing Portfolio Program is merely effective in improving the students’ writing ability in terms of numerical grade scores. From the Pre- Program Implementation (Pre- PI) to Cycle I, the average increase of the students’ writing score is 6.51. After the implementation, that is from the (Pre-IP) cycle to cycle I, the increase achieved is Z =.380 and p = .017 (p <0.05), and from cycle I to II is) Z = 2524 with p = .012 (p <0.05), and from cycle II to III the improvement increase is Z = 2524 with p = .012 (p <.0.05). It means that all of the increase is significant. Yet, if the scores are converted to Skidmore’s criteria of Scoring Scale for Composition, the quality of the paragraphs does not increase significantly. All of the paragraphs are not publishable yet. Many aspects of refinement are still needed to display or publish the paragraph. Keywords: effectiveness, to improve, online Process Writing Portfolio Program
