Abstract

This qualitative study is aimed at discovering the similarities of onomatope (not onomatopoeia) animal sounds between two unrelated languages, Indonesian and English. The investigation operates on phonological system with some goals to achieve; to describe how sounds of onomatope animal correspond, to explain why the two languages share similarities in their onomatope animal sounds.  The data in this research are from Indonesian and English comics which are backed up by interviews with twenty-six informants consisting of eleven adults and fifteen children. The interviews are aimed at reinforcing the collected data and also disqualifying several lingual units which under suspicion of loan sound imitations. The research findings reveal that out of 22 (twenty-two) onomatope animal sounds gathered as the research data, there are only 15 (fifteen) sharing the same phoneme distribution after conducting sound correspondence. The phoneme distribution occurs mostly on onset position, the second is on coda position, and the least is on nucleus position. There are three factors which evoke the similarities or that can be called convergence. First, because of similarities in phoneme inventories. Second, because of similarities in phonotactic rules. Third, because of same sound symbolism which apply to both Indonesian and English.

Abstract

Concept of discourse involves three dimensions that are as language use, communication of beliefs (human cognition), and interaction in social situation. As a language use, discourse consists of two elements: cohesion and coherence. Discourse is divided into spoken and written discourse. Written discourse such as newspaper is very familiar today. One of the famous newspapers in Indonesia is The Jakarta Post. The most essential article in a newspaper is its editorial. Therefore, the research has been intended to find cohesion and coherence devices of the editorials in The Jakarta Post. In this research, substantive data were texts consisting of cohesion and coherence devices. The sources were editorials in The Jakarta Post May 2011 edition that consisted of 28 editorial articles. The data was analyzed using Identity Method. Results of the analysis showed that editorials in The Jakarta Post May 2011 contain all kinds of cohesion and coherence devices. The editorials contain grammatical cohesion (reference, ellipsis, substitution, conjunction) and lexical cohesion (reiteration and collocation). Coherence devices (repetition, personal reference, transition) are also contained in the data.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore how the way I use POW+TREE strategy to improve students’ cohesive devices mastery. This research was conducted in one of junior high school in Surakarta at eighth grade students. Based on the preliminary study, I found that students had writing problems in mastering cohesive devices. I chose POW+TREE strategy to improve their writing problems in mastering cohesive devices. This study used Classroom Action Research (CAR) research design. The CAR activity involves of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subjects of this study are 29 students in the eighth grade in academic year 2016/2017. The data were collected through writing test, observation, and field-notes.There was an improvement in the students’ score from preliminary study and after the implementation of the strategy. The average score after implementation in cycle 2 was 83.24. As the result of observation sheet, it showed that the students’ interest also increased that was proved by students’ activeness in asking difficult words. The field notes showed that in the teaching and learning process, most of the students enjoyed in writing activity. Hence, it can be concluded that the implementation of POW+TREE strategy was successful for students’ writing ability in mastering cohesive devices.Considering that the strategy had successfully improved the students’ writing ability in mastering cohesive devices it is suggested for future researchers to conduct an experimental research related to this strategy for the same skill.

Abstract

This work is a review paper. This conceptual writing focuses on how students’ reading interest is essential for reading instruction. This argument is derived from some experts who suggest the teachers carry literacy in the classroom. It means that teachers should take students’ interest into account. There are some benefits of considering students’ interest in reading classrooms. In addition, some factors can influence reading activities in the classroom. One of those is the text. Texts serve as the input for the students in reading activities. However, not all texts are appropriate for the students. Therefore, this conceptual study presents some considerations in choosing the texts and ways to take students’ interest into account in reading activities. The considerations in choosing the text are taken and analyzed from some experts who are concern with this topic. Along the way, teachers can finally consider the students’ reading interest by understanding the ways how to consider the students’ interest in selecting the texts that will be used in the English reading classroom proposed by experts.

Abstract

Society has enjoyed the ease of communication afforded by “Whatsapp”, a popular freeware and cross-platform communication application. “Whatsapp”’s popularity has invited educators to experiment with it in various ways to shore up education. This study was conducted to describe students’ perceptions on the use of “Whatsapp” for teaching and learning vocabulary. A vocabulary virtual class in the form of a “Whatsapp” group where students needed to enroll was created for that purpose. This virtual class exempted the students from physically attending the physical class as it enabled students to remotely attend the class. Teaching and learning methods of vocabulary in the virtual class included using pictures, translation, and sentence construction. At the end of the class, the students were to inform the researchers about their perceptions of the virtual class. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. Data was collected through a paper-based questionnaire, which was distributed to all students in a face-to-face class, a session taking place two days prior to the research. The virtual vocabulary class that the researchers administered overall received positive feedbacks from the learners. However, teaching and learning vocabulary using “Whatsapp” also had its own drawback.
