Abstract

This study aims to analyze, to compare and to differentiate specific values of accountingand medical students. While the majority of previous studies used the Rokeach InstrumentSurvey, the current study employs the modified Rokeach and Schwartz Instrument. Thismodified instrument consists of thirty variables. However, a factor analysis indicates thatthe variables can be grouped into four constructs: individuality, theoretical, social, andesthetical. Overall, the study shows that personal values of accounting students are belowthose of medical students. Based on the finding, the study suggests that a certain subject orcourse with a high ethical contents should be taught in accounting programs. Keywords: etika, specific values, personal values, individuality, theoretical, social, aesthetics

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Keywords: manufacturing capabilities, strategic manufacturing, resource-based view

Abstract

The determinants of regional growth are demand and supply. Demand as a factor for explaining regional growth inquires where the demand comes from and traces its impact through the regional economic system, where a demand for a regional output gives rise to other regional output by way of backward linkages. The export-based theory of growth claims demand as the determinant of regional growth. It seeks to identify the region’ s export activities, to forecast the growth in the activities, and to evaluate the impact of that additional export activity on the other or non-basic activities of the region. The export-based theory plays the role of identifying which sectors/ industries are basic and which ones are non-basic after those sectors/ industries undergoing a shift-share analysis. The export –based theory offers various techniques of determining what a basic sector industry is and various wyas of calculating economic base multipliers. The export-based theory has some disadvantages: no inter-regional inter-industry interdependence, short-run analysis, etc. However, one thing the export-based theory can contribute is that it is useful for small regions like a district (kecamatan), regency (kabupaten) in determining their ability to export and is the first to apply the macro-economic model of income determination to regions. Keywords: basic & non-basic sectors, location quotient, economic base multiplier

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the trade balanceand the real exchange rate for bilateral trade in merchandise goods between Indonesia and the US, Japan and Singapore as its major trading partner. This article employs theelasticity approach to analyze such a relationship. Johansen multivariate cointegration isproposed to examine the impact of depreciation of real exchange rate on trade balance. Totests for J-curve, a generalize impulse response function generated from a vector error-correction model is applied.Quarterly data over the period 1988:1-2003:4 are used for the analysis. Our findingsdemonstrate that the real exchange rate has a positive impact on the bilateral tradebalance between Indonesia and Japan and Singapore. The generalized Marshall-Lernercondition, however, seems to hold only for the bilateral trade balance between Indonesiaand Japan. This study also finds that there is an evidence for J-curve for Indonesia’sbilateral trade balance with the Japan.Keyword: real exchange rate, trade balance, Marshal-Lerner Condition and J-curve

Abstract

This article reviews the economic concept of the health production function regarding the determinants of infant health and the results of previous empirical studies on the role of prenatal care in infant health production. The review will include a brief explanation about the health production function, followed by how the concept applies to infant health, explaining the derivation of the infant health production function, and finally the previous empirical studies on the role of prenatal care in infant health production. Grossman’s model on the demand for health and the framework of the infant health production function of Rosenzweig and Schultz explain that the following important factors will influence infant health and the demand for maternal medical care: age, wage/income, education, and knowledge. Furthermore, given that an infant inherits its health capital stock from its mother, there may be biological factors (e.g., a specific health endowment) that may be keys to determining infant health. In terms of the role of prenatal care, the review summaries that there is strong evidence that prenatal care does affect infant health. However, it is difficult to isolate the causal effect between the two without con-trolling for endogeneity, such as via a natural experiment. It is possible that there are unob-served heterogeneous factors of mothers that can affect prenatal care and infant health. Many studies have attempted to estimate the infant health production function, taking into account these selection biases. The merits and critiques of existing methods have also been discussed in the previously mentioned studies, which have mostly been conducted in relation to developed countries and have very rarely been conducted for the developing countries’ context. The find-ings of this review state that studies into this topic should consider many important aspects, such as selectivity bias, the determinants of infant health as stated in theory and previous empirical studies, and the need to use an appropriate measurement of adequate prenatal care, especially for the case of developing countries. Keywords: health production function, infant health production function, Grossman model, prenatal care

Abstract

A laboratory experiment examines the effect of advertisement, advertorial,Jurnal Ekonomi dan Bisnis Indonesia, Vol 22 No.1 Tahun 2007and source of information on the adoption process of functional food. The treatmentlevels in this experiment were company advertisement, public advertisement, company advertorials and public advertorial. One hundred and ninety-nine researchsubjects were selected; those were the ones who served as decision makers in buyingfood for themselves or their families. The result shows that the audio visualadvertisement only increases subjective knowledge whereas printed advertorialincreases both subjective and objective knowledge. Besides, the study alsodemonstrates that advertorial increases both subjective and objective knowledge. However, this study shows that company advertisement can increase the effect ofsubjective knowledge as much as the advertorial. The study does not prove that theindependent institutions increase stronger perceived persuasion effect than thecompany as the source of communication. Keywords: advertisement, advertorial, adoption process, functional food.
