Abstract

the main objectives of the study was intended to investigate factor affecting coffee production packages information utilization by smallholder coffee growers in Ethiopia. Cross sectional research design and two stages sampling technique was used to select sample households. The data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics to describe factors affecting information utilizations in coffee production packages. Ordered logistic regression model was used to analyze the factors affecting information utilization in coffee package. From 16 explanatory variables hypothesized: age, household size, on-farm income, coffee farm size, radio use, social participation, farmer’s willingness to share information and farmers perception toward coffee package practice were found to be significant at less than 1% and 5% significance level. In a nutshell, there are different demographic, economic, institutional and psychological factors which result in the reduction of coffee yields. Therefore, rural development strategy should give priority attention to promote coffee production package technologies by providing sustainable technical services through training practically by introducing coffee demonstration site and managing the existing  old coffee farm in the study area.

Abstract

This study compared Fuzzy Time Series with and without Markov Chain Method for forecasting Indonesian seaweed export in particular; it analyzed the forecasting ability of the models and the effects of different lengths of interval and increment information on the forecasting error of models. The secondary data between 1989 and 2018 were collected from Bureau Central Statistic (BPS), UN Comtrade, Ministry Marine and Fisheries (KKP). The results indicate that Fuzzy Time Series with and without Markov Chain method performs better in the forecasting ability in short-term period prediction and the values of Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and Mean Square Error (MSE) tends to be smaller than the Fuzzy Time Series without Markov Chain.

Abstract

Rainwater harvesting (RWH) is promoted in arid and semi-arid areas for increased yields. Planting pits are RWH systems that are used for collecting rainwater and runoff. Recently, there has been increased interest in economic and environmental benefits of agricultural technologies for sustainable development. To contribute to this knowledge, economics of Chololo and Five by Nine planting pits and sorghum and pigeon pea mulch was investigated at two sites in semi-arid Eastern Kenya for four seasons. The experiments were in a randomized complete block design in three replicates. Returns of planting pits and mulch were calculated by evaluating the benefit-cost (B: C) ratios and net present values (NPV) while considering water as an economic good. Planting pits were profitable for sorghum and unprofitable for pigeon pea production. The outcome differed with sites and seasons depending on rainfall availability. Chololo pits earned US$ 92 to US$ 786 per hectare whereas Five by Nine pits earned US $ 59 to US$ 955 per hectare. Mulches were beneficial for sorghum and pigeon pea production at Nkarini and unprofitable at Machang’a with the yield differing with seasons depending on rainfall availability. This study recommends Five by Nine and Chololo pits for sorghum production at Nkarini where it was economically viable in three out of four seasons.

Abstract

The availability of agricultural land in urban areas has an important role in ensuring the availability of food for the population. The urban sprawl phenomenon that occurs in urban areas encourages the availability of agricultural land to experience shrinkage over time. Therefore, this study aims to determine the trend of the development of the area of agricultural land in Pekalongan City, and its impact on the fulfillment the food needs of the population. This study used a sample of urban areas in Pekalongan City using purposive sampling method and the data used are secondary data sourced from the Central Bureau of Statistics and the Food Security and Extension Agency (BKPP) in 1989 until 2017. The data used in this study are data agricultural land area, rice production, population, and consumption per capita of rice in Pekalongan City, as well as factor data for conversion of rice to rice. Furthermore, all data is processed and then analyzed using trend analysis. The results showed that the area of agricultural land in Pekalongan City is decreasing over time. Moreover, it followed by the quantity of rice offered that also have a downward trend. In addition, the demand trend of the population's rice also declined due to the decline of rice consumption per capita population in Pekalongan City during the period 1989 to 2017.

Abstract

Organic farming is becoming an issue that continues to grow at this time. Organic products become exclusive products at higher prices compared to conventional agricultural products. The higher price can be one form of motives for farmers to do farming with an organic system that is the economic motive. On the other hand, organic agriculture with environmentally-friendly management is an advantage of this farming system.  It is necessary to know more about the motives of farmers in undertaking organic farming, economic or non-economic motives. Non-economic motives in an agricultural activity are needed to support agricultural activities based on Smart Eco-Bioproduction as an effort to realize sustainable agriculture. The results showed that economic motives still dominated the motives of farmers in organic rice farming. Altruism, as a non-economic motive, is at the level of human altruism.

Abstract

Anchote is one of the root crops grown in southwestern parts of Ethiopia. Even though market participation has got a due attention by government, smallholder farmers’ participation in fair market is still below the requirements. This study aims to identify determinants of smallholder anchote farmers’ market participation decision and their level of participation. Both primary and secondary data were collected from 162 randomly selected anchote farmers.  Descriptive statistics and heckman two stage models were used to analyze the data. The econometric model result revealed that decision of anchote market participation were significantly determined by quantity of anchote produced, access to extension service, age of household head, ownership of transportation facilities and lagged price. On the other hand, the extent of anchote market participation were significantly determined by sex of household head, quantity of anchote produced, access to market information, income from other crops and family size. Therefore, enhancing farmers’ access to market information, boosting the production and productivity of anchote through better extension services and infrastructures, awareness creation on gender balanced market engagement and improvement in transportation facilities are the critical points that should get policy attentions in the study area.

Abstract

Abstract: This study aims to analyze the competitive advantage and comparative advantage of cassava in Simalungun Regency, North Sumatera Province, which will be focused on increasing the production more better and more diversified through the approach of cassava farming activities. This context, based on the demand side of cassava commodity that is feasible to be developed by increasing its production in order to influence the level of income that will be received by farmers. This paper is proposed to: (a) analysis of farming both financially and economically, (b) comparative and competitive analysis, (c) to formulate the interim policy assumption of both advantages. Result of Matrix Policy Analysis Method (PAM), indicating that both of these commodities has a comparative and competitive advantage, shown by the ratio of DRC and PCR less than 1. Calculation shows DRC for cassava equal to 0.259. PCR of cassava farming is 0.66. This value means that cassava farming in Simalungun district can be said to have superiority comparative and competitive advantage. In other words, cassava farming at more research sites more better to be produced domestically rather than imported.

Abstract

This paper is designed to review opportunities, constraints and contributions of industrial development on economic growth in Ethiopia. Sources such as scholarly publication, News and magazines, Books and chapters, Conference proceedings, government documents, theses and Dissertations have been reviewed. The review result indicates that industrial sector have substantial contribution to economic growth that helps to create a large portion of the resources needed to fund social development programs in the country. In addition, creation of employment and hence generation of income take place in the sector directly and are indirectly fostered in other sectors like agriculture or services through their linkages to industry. However, financial constraints, shortage of raw materials supply and lack of skilled manpower were identified as the main obstacles to the development of the sector. Finally the review argues that high rate of capital accumulation is a necessary condition for bringing about structural transformation and increased level of production and productivity to give rise for industrialization and the use of appropriate combination of skilled manpower, modern and suitable technologies and investment on both public infrastructures and manufacturing activities should be made.
