Abstract

Indonesian black rice cv Cempo Ireng was evaluated for cancer prevention using a T47D cell line model. Methanolic extract of black rice bran (BRB) showed cytotoxicity with an IC50 of 522.13 µg/ml. This result was in contrast to water extract of BRB, which yielded an IC50 of more than 6000 µg/ml. From the methanolic extract of BRB, its 6 fractions were found from the preparative TLC performance, with Rf values ranging from 0 to 0.97. According to the MTT assay of all fractions, fraction 3 (F3) had the lowest IC50 (60.17 ± 1.72µg/ml), while fraction 2 (F2) had an IC50 of 64.3 ± 0.61µg/ml. However, F2 showed the highest induction of apoptosis, i.e. about 75.39 ± 0.43% compared to the T47D cells without treatment (control) (about 8.39 ± 0.16%) and with doxorubicin treatment (about 41.30 ± 0.08%). Furthermore, fraction 5 (F5) not only induced apoptosis but also increased the S-phase arrest percentage (60.36 ± 2.07%), which was significantly higher than for the other treatments. Therefore, each fraction of BRB showed different cytotoxic responses to T47D cells.

Abstract

The determination of tiering style is an important task in ichnology. Tiering styles can be modeled by using ichnodiversity, the number of behaviors and number of tiers and their relationships. In this study, this approach was applied in the area of Samarinda, Kutai Basin, Indonesia. The values of ichnodiversity, number of behaviors, and number of tiers were identified. Ichnodiversity was strongly correlated with number of behaviors but weakly correlated with number of tiers. Accordingly, three tiering styles were identified. Typically, tiering styles A, B, and C demonstrated high ichnodiversity, number of behaviors and number of tiers. In general, the colonization window that coincides with the environmental conditions characteristic for deltaic settings is the factor that mostly regulates these tiering styles.

Abstract

As exploration is forced into more difficult areas with complex three-dimensional (3-D) structural environments, the importance of 3-D magnetotelluric (MT) modeling is essential for the correct interpretation of MT data. To reduce the complexity of the calculations introduced by 3-D models, iterative forward calculation of MT response functions is used as basis for inversion of 3-D MT data. This paper proposes an alternative procedure for making reliable 3-D MT modeling codes for forward calculation that is not only effective but also accurate. This is accomplished by using a direct method to solve the linear systems arising from the discretization process in the vector finite element approach. The vector finite element method is known for its capability of overcoming difficulties in modeling caused by possible jumps of normal components across discontinuities of material properties. Meanwhile, by using a direct method rather than an iterative method, the process of solving the linear equations does not suffer from slow convergence. Here, we present a comparison between our modeling codes and codes based on a different approach. In the resulting 3-D MT responses it was found that the proposed method has high accuracy.

Abstract

Eugenol is an alkenyl phenol compound obtained as an essential oil from different parts of the clove such as its leaves and flowers. The essential oil from cloves can contain up to 90% eugenol, which is mainly responsible for its aroma. Eugenol is an interesting compound due to its simplicity and richness in functionalities, making it a valuable building block in synthesis. One of the key steps in eugenol transformation is demethylation to produce a hydroxycavicol. Demethylation is commonly carried out using a nucleophilic or an acidic method. In this study, a simple yet reliable nucleophilic method for demethylation using lithium chloride (LiCl) was attempted. The product was characterized by NMR, FTIR and HRMS spectroscopy. The absence of a methoxy signal at 3.5-4 ppm in the 1H NMR spectrum suggests that demethylation was successful. The HRMS result showed m/z 149.0596, confirming the formation of product. The demethylation reaction under acidic conditions formed a dimer of eugenol with the methoxy group still intact. This was supported by the 1H NMR data, which showed methoxy signals at 3.85 and 3.82 ppm and integration in the aromatic region, which suggests a dimer structure.

Abstract

In elimination theory, the matrix method of computing resultant remains the most popular due to its less computational complexity compared to Groebner basis and set characteristics approaches. However, for a matrix method to be effective, the size and the nature of elements of the matrix play an important role, since if the resultant is not an exact resultant, it has to be  extracted from the determinant of the corresponding resultant matrix.. In this paper, a new resultant matrix is proposed. The proposed construction consists of four blocks, one of the blocks uses an entry formula of computing a Dixon matrix, while, two of the blocks use a mapping from the Jouanolou's method and the last block consists of only zero elements. The new formulation is computed without intermediate cancelling terms which reduces the complexity of the construction and enhances its effectiveness.

Abstract

This paper proposes two new classes of ratio estimators for population mean when information on a known auxiliary variable is available in simple random sampling. A combined family of ratio estimators for estimating population mean by combining the two new estimators together in order to minimize the mean square error (MSE) is then suggested. The expressions for the bias and mean square error of all proposed estimators up to the first order of approximation were obtained. The performance of the proposed estimators was compared with that of existing estimators using both a theoretical and a simulation study. The proposed family of estimators was found to be more efficient than the existing estimators.

Abstract

Anthocyanins extracted from purple-fleshed sweet potato were encapsulated using emulsification-crosslinking technique with chitosan acted as polymer and sodium tripolyphosphate as cross-linker. The parameters influencing microencapsulation were investigated i.e. stirring intensity and polymer concentration, pH of polymer and crosslinker solution, and also ratio of anthocyanins extract (core) to polymer concentration by characterizing the properties of obtained microcapsules. Stirring intensity of 1600 rpm achieved microcapsules with smaller mean diameter, narrower particle size distribution, and greater encapsulation efficiency than that of 1200 rpm for each similar polymer concentration. The research revealed that pH of 3.0 gave the greatest encapsulation efficiency and antioxidant activity of microcapsules. However, the different of mean diameter and particle size distribution of microcapsules for all of pH solution variation was not significant. Ratio of anthocyanins extract to polymer concentration 75% (w/w) possessed the greatest encapsulation efficiency, the biggest mean diameter and the widest particle size distribution between all of ratio variation. Meanwhile, ratio of 150% was selected for further analysis (microstructure and FT-IR) because it gave narrower particle size distribution and smaller mean diameter with its encapsulation efficiency was only little different from others ratio. Microstructure analysis by SEM revealed sphere and irregular microparticles. FT-IR analysis revealed that that there was bonding and interaction among anthocyanin, chitosan, and tripolyphosphate ion.

Abstract

Fibroblasts and IL-1α are important components of inflammation and healing in dental caries. This healing allegedly could be enhanced by robusta coffee. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of varying concentrations of robusta coffee on IL-1α expression and the number of fibroblasts. Wistar rats were used, divided into 4 groups and 3 subgroups (7-, 14"‘, and 21-day rats) with each group containing 4 animals: Control group: untreated group; 25% Coffee Group: cavities + treated with 25% coffee bean paste; 50% Coffee Group: cavities + treated with 50% coffee bean paste; 75% Coffee Group: cavities + treated with 75% coffee bean paste. The 7-, 14-, and 21-day rats were sacrificed serially for analysis of the number of dental pulp fibroblasts by staining with HE and IL-1α expression by immunohistochemistry. The resulting data were analyzed descriptively and using ANOVA, followed by an LSD test. The higher the concentration of robusta coffee, the more the expression of IL-1α decreased and the more the number of fibroblasts increased. It is suspected that immunomodulatory proteins inhibit IL-1α expression. It was concluded that robusta coffee could decrease IL-1α expression and increase the number of fibroblasts during the healing process in the dental pulp of Wistar rats.
