Abstract

In the present study, the CO2 frost phenomenon of CH4-CO2 mixtures has been observed for the rational design of CO2 removal from natural gas using a controlled freeze out area. The CO2 frost conditions were estimated using the ZNE method and process simulation software (Aspen HYSYS® v7.3). The experiment was carried out using a double pipe heat exchanger (DPHE) with the concentration of CO2 in the gas mixture at 5 and 10% and pressure of the gas mixture from 1 to 20 bar. The equilibrium temperature predictions of the ZNE method and the process simulation software only had a slight difference, with a magnitude deviation of less than 1% for pressures below 20 bar and 3% for pressures in the range of 20-30 bar, respectively. In the experimental study, CO2 frost formation was detected at pressures of 1, 5, 10 and 20 bar. The locations of the initial CO2 frost formation were determined using a pressure drop indicator associated with the predicted frost temperatures obtained from the ZNE method and the process simulation software. For all studied variables, the locations of initial CO2 frost formation were found at 0.887-1.531 m from the inlet.

Abstract

In this study, we fabricated broadband anti-reflection coatings using a method based on layer-by-layer self assembly of positively charged layer double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets and negatively charged silica nanoparticles via electrostatic interaction. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were used to observe the morphology, structure, and surface topography of LDH/SiO2 multilayer coatings. The anti-reflection properties of the coatings were investigated by UV visible spectrophotometry. Glass substrates covered with the LDH/SiO2 multilayer coatings exhibited broadband anti-reflection properties. The obtained [LDH(0.4 g/L)/SiO2(25 nm)]8, [LDH(0.4 g/L)/SiO2(50 nm)]10, and [LDH(0.8 g/L)/SiO2(25 nm)]6 coatings exhibited the best broadband anti-reflection properties among the as-prepared LDH/SiO2 multilayer coatings with different deposition cycles. Transmission levels of 97% were achieved in these optimal systems. Moreover, a maximum transmittance of 98% was achieved at a wavelength of 550 nm in the [LDH(0.4 g/L)/SiO2(25nm)]8 system and at 700 nm in the [LDH(0.8 g/L)/SiO2(25nm)]6 system. Different packing patterns of the two oppositely charged nanomaterials (dense packing of LDH nanosheets and loose stacking of silica nanoparticles) and the moderate textured surface of the coatings contributed to the enhanced light transmission and reduced wavelength dependence in the UV visible spectral range.

Abstract

Knowledge of the mechanical properties of apple peel, as the outermost tissue of the fruit, is crucial for the designing of apple harvesting machines. In this study, longitudinal and transverse tensile tests were conducted on peels from the shadow side and sunlit side of two apple cultivars (Starkrimson and Fuji) using an electronic universal testing machine, and tear tests and puncture tests were carried out on peels of both sides as well. The stress-strain curves and tear and puncture force-deformation curves of the peels were acquired and the tensile strength, elastic modulus, failure strain tear strength, puncture strength of the peels were measured. Also, scanning electron microscope images were made. The results showed that the maximum values of tensile strength, elastic modulus, fracture strain, tear strength, and puncture strength were 2.56 MPa, 24.00 MPa, 19.92%, 0.391 kN·m-1, and 0.289 N·mm-2, respectively. The tensile strength, elastic modulus, and puncture strength values for the Starkrimson peels were higher than those for the Fuji peels from the same side. Apple peel is an anisotropic heterogeneous material. The bearing capacity of the peel depends on the number and distribution of microcracks on the surface, and the size and shape of the epidermal cells. The organization and connections between the cells determine the strength of the connections between cells.

Abstract

This research used nondestructive testing technology to evaluate the anchorage quality of soil anchors. We first created a soil model in the laboratory and then performed a nondestructive experiment on the soil anchor using the stress wave reflection method. Our study displays variable characteristics of the acceleration response curve of a soil anchor under transient excitation. The fixed end reflection signal was very strong, while the reflected signal from the embedded end was weak. This is mainly caused by attenuation of both the fixed reflection signal and the stress wave. The stress wave velocity characteristics in the soil anchor were between the values of anchorage medium materials and free anchors. The velocity is not only related to the characteristics of the bolt body and anchorage medium, but also to the adhesive strength between the bolt and anchorage medium.

Abstract

In this research a measurement systemwas developedfor monitoring humidity and temperature in the cavity between the wall and the insulating material in the building envelope. This new technology does not disturb the insulating material during testing. The measurement system can also be applied to insulation fixed ten or twenty years earlier and sufficiently reveals the quality of the insulation. A mathematical model is proposed to characterize the dynamic responses in the cavity between the wall and the building insulation as influenced by weather conditions.These dynamic responses are manifested as a delay of both humidity and temperature changes in the cavity when compared with the changes in the ambient surrounding of the building. The process is then modeled through numerical methods and statistical analysis of the experimental data obtained using the new system of measurement.

Abstract

Solar energy is known as an environmentally friendly energy source with a wide range of applications. This energy can be utilized in various applications such as domestic and industrial water heating using solar water heating (SWH) systems. The thermal performance of an SWH system using a V-shaped absorber plate is presented in this study. Two SWH systems with different absorber plates, i.e. a flat-plate and a V-shaped plate, have been investigated experimentally. First, the absorptivity of the absorber plates was calculated analytically. The optimum V-shaped configuration with angle at β = 21° (V-shaped dimensions t = 4 cm and l = 4 cm) was determined from various V-shaped plate absorbers based on their absorptivity and applied in the experimental study. Two SWH systems were installed and tested at a low flowrate of 0.5 L/min and at a high flowrate of 2 L/min. The results showed that the SWH system with V-shaped plate absorber had a 3.6-4.4% better performance compared with that of the system with flat-plate absorber.

Abstract

Wood is a natural resource that is renewable and available in various species in tropical countries. Its abundancy in nature makes it easy to obtain, thus making it a nature friendly material for use in construction. Indonesia is the most important source of tropical wood in the world after Brazil, making the use of wood for structural elements very desirable. It is estimated that 4000 different varieties of wood exist in Indonesia. This estimate is based on the herbarium species collected by the Forestry Research Institute, currently counting nearly 4000 types of trees with a diameter of more than 40 cm. In the Indonesian wood structure code, the strength of woods is divided into 3 grades (grade I, II and III). This paper presents an evaluation of the mechanical properties of glulam wood sourced from native Indonesian timber: Bengkirai wood (grade I), Kamper wood (grade II), and Nyatoh wood (grade III), thus proving the potential for Indonesian wood as industrial structural elements in wooden constructions.

Abstract

In Malaysia, the car safety level has been elevated through regulations and a consumer-based approach, i.e. the New Car Assessment Program in Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP). Nevertheless, the availability of information on consumers’ car purchasing decisions towards safety is still limited in Malaysia. Thus, this study was aimed at evaluating consumers’ purchasing decisions of their present cars and investigating their awareness of ASEAN NCAP. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed among consumers visiting different car showrooms and dealer shops. The findings suggest that safety was considered as one of the top three factors by the respondents when purchasing their present cars. Awareness of ASEAN NCAP has increased as compared to a previous study. This information is essential for policy makers, manufacturers and other stakeholders to assist in setting priorities with regard to the promotion of car safety in the country.
