Abstract

Studies on the processes that link logos and space design aesthetics to visual perception and recognition of visual brand identity (VBI) remain scant. Consequently, this study analyzed the visual correspondence between visual brand identity elements such as logos and interior spaces in commercial retail banking companies by assessing the foundations of their aesthetics formation and the role of aesthetic principles, aesthetic appraisal, and aesthetic impression. Using a qualitative approach, four commercial retail banking companies in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia were analyzed through semi-structured interviews with professional designers and design academics. A comparative method was used to determine the visual correspondence between the aesthetics of the logos and the interior spaces. The findings confirmed the importance of using design characteristics and theories for designing the elements of VBI. The results encourage the use of design for building visual correspondence between the elements of a visual identity of brands. This study provides a useful addition to knowledge on the place of design principles in the creation of VBI.

Abstract

The Indonesian modern art scene in the 1940s, which related to many ideologies, also influenced the art of Indonesian artist Sunaryo (1943). One of his recent works, Wot Batu, is a work of land art consisting of sequential installations made with stones lying in a landscape in Bandung. Wot Batu means ‘stone bridge’ in old Javanese. This study aimed to discover Sunaryo’s artistic qualities in Wot Batu in order to trace Sunaryo’s perspective of spirituality and his background as a modern Indonesian artist. This research used Feldmann’s art criticism approach. The interpretation and judgment process in this work was obtained by connecting a formal analysis of the artwork to Sunaryo’s background as an artist. The research findings confirm that Sunaryo presents his own perspective on spirituality in this work through the use of stones as the main material and other natural elements. He made use of various aspects, such as combining and assembling stones, multisensory stimulation of the visitor, the site and the movement of the visitor inside it, support his concept. This study revealed that Sunaryo’s perspective on spirituality not merely concerns the relationship between humans and a greater power, but also humans as a part of nature, balance, the perpetuity of the universe, and the experience of nothingness and serenity.

Abstract

With the gradual advancement of globalization, cultural values and traditional decorative practices as well as people’s lifestyles have changed through digital awareness. This has seriously affected the interior decoration industry and brought challenges to the local handicraft industry. Pakistan’s traditional handicraft is famous in the world, but the flow of imported machine-made products in Pakistan has led to a decline of Pakistan’s handicraft industry. This research investigated which factors are involved in home decoration and to see if these factors are advantageous for the handicraft industry or not. The use of handicraft decoration objects varies among people when they design their houses. Thus, study conducted a survey, which found several factors that Pakistani people emphasize in relation to home decoration. Currently, these factors do not benefit the handicraft industry as people pursue a modern lifestyle and they consider handicraft objects without innovation and design outdated. Interior decoration is seen as a major aspect of traditional Pakistani life and culture, with distinct cultural characteristics. Inspired by the latest way of thinking, an interior design first exists as a concept and is then realized through careful planning. It is meant to evoke a specific mood through the strategic use of color, space, and style. In Pakistan, home accessories are generally and strongly influenced by the current fashion in the end market, with many changes brought about by consumers’ purchasing patterns, designers’ and decorators’ styles, and economic conditions. Keeping up with constantly changing trends is the main challenge faced by the traditional handicraft industry sector. In many cases, craftspeople are disconnected from the end market, which is a challenge for them to be able to profit from their work.

Abstract

This article contributes to the discussion on the need to adopt an interdisciplinary approach in the visual art syllabus, specifically in higher education in Malaysia. Over the last two decades, the academic world has faced rapidly advancing technology and the rise of Industrial Revolution 4.0 (IR4.0). Because of the increased level of high-tech software and hardware competency among students, universities are in dire need to improve and innovate their current syllabi. Hence, this study was carried out to discuss the need to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to improve current visual art syllabi in Malaysia. The topics that are explored in this paper include the definition of an interdisciplinary approach in visual art syllabi, the current status of visual art syllabi in Malaysia, factors that are important for the integration of art with other fields, and how an interdisciplinary approach can be implemented. The data used in this research were obtained from a seminar, in-depth interviews, and a literature review, and were analyzed using a qualitative method. The findings indicate that visual art education duly needs a new program or needs to be revamped into a future-ready curriculum. Therefore, an interdisciplinary approach, or the integration of two bodies of knowledge in one program, could be one of the solutions to this issue.

Abstract

Moein Mosaver and Hosein Behzad depicted beauty in the form of female figures using their unique ways of applying form, color, and content. The purpose of the present research was to study the way female figures are drawn in works of Mosaver and Behzad, compare them, and find out the relationship between them to finally answer the main research question, which concerns finding the similarities and differences between the works of both artists in form, color, and content. The method of the research was qualitative, the way the data was processed was descriptive-analytic, and the information was gathered through library sources. Regarding the time gap between the lives of saver and Behzad, it seems there should be similarities and differences between their miniatures. The results of the research showed that the composition in the works of both artists is mostly vertical and centralized, and the primary color blue and the secondary colors green, purple, and orange are mostly used. Foreign influences and the impact of the economic conditions are obvious in their works. Some of the differences between their works are the application of more primary and warm colors in Mosaver’s works and less variety of color in Behzad’s, while the latter’s lines are freer. Behzad also used perspective in his miniatures, and he preferred content over form.

Abstract

Heuristic evaluation (HE) can be used to effectively identify usability issues in various interfaces. However, it has not been widely used in evaluating smartphone apps, especially in the health and fitness domain. One reason is the lack of HCI experts, which makes incorporating HE into the design process difficult. This paper presents the results of a study that compared HE performed by three HCI experts and three novices in evaluating a gamification app for health and fitness on a smartphone. The study used Smartphone Mobile Application heuRisTics (SMART), which focuses on smartphone apps, and a severity rating scale to determine the severity of the usability issues. These issues were mapped to the SMART heuristic. The findings indicate that novices may identify usability issues that the experts overlooked. While the experts identified eighteen usability issues, the novices found only four; however, the novice’s findings may be used as a substitute for HE when experts are unavailable. Both experts and novices identified two similar usability issues, but their severity ratings differed. One possible solution to address the lack of usability issues identified by novices in HE is to use more novices instead of experts in the evaluation process.

Abstract

Aesthetic perceptions are influenced by the formal aspects and visual substance of art, which prompt individuals to respond and reconsider their perspective. The purpose of this study was to evaluate experts’ aesthetic perceptions of the complexity of Pua Kumbu design motifs. The complexity of the symbols found in the design motifs contributes to a lack of interest in understanding the meanings of these motifs, particularly among the younger generation. Therefore, through the utilization of interviews with structured and unstructured questions, a qualitative technique was employed to investigate the experts’ aesthetic perception of the visual complexity of the design motifs. The findings provide a fundamental understanding and emphasize the importance of preserving traditional human values, with the hope that hand weaving, as a valuable heritage, will endure and maintain its significance in the long term.

Abstract

This paper discusses artworks that were created through a practice-led research approach. Considering practice-led research, the content of this paper encompasses every possible relation to the artworks, such as the perspective and statements of practice, considerations, thoughts behind the themes, observations, and interpretations of the creative process. All these aspects are grouped into two sections: the context of the practice and self-reflection on the practice. This research found that material-oriented and media-based approaches are not inseparable in ceramic art practice. Indeed, both perspectives are very valuable to understand the creative process as well as the appreciation of art works. Due to the creative process in art requiring non-linear thinking, the contents of this paper are not hierarchical in one direction. Instead, it can be conceived as offering multiple perspectives to understand the making process and the resulting artifact. In some way, this paper can be considered as a narrative style of writing, which is appropriate to reveal the creative process.

Abstract

In this paper, co-creation through visual art as a form of community engagement is explored and discussed through its definition, origin, method, practice, context, and potential. The Usungan Parade co-creation project at a khatam al-Quran event in Kabong, Sarawak, East Malaysia served as a case study through a qualitative analysis to explore the experiences and interpretations of the community related to the co-creation phenomenon. The study was conducted through participant observation and interviews with a sample drawn from heads of families, usungan craftsmen, and audience members. Six factors were identified in this community engagement project using the co-creation model. Then we elaborated how the participants interpreted the value of co-creation obtained from their activities. The objective was to build a strong argument for an in-depth study of implementing co-creation in a particular community. This research found that co-creation can contribute to reducing the gaps between those who can produce art and society, especially through the participation of ‘non-art affiliated’ communities and artistic excellence.

Abstract

Consumer cognitive and emotional responses significantly impact consumers’ affinity for both tangible and intangible products. Recent research underscores the heightened influence of consumer emotional and cognitive perceptions in product design, surpassing reliance on designers’ instincts or experiences. This case study delved into the analysis of automobiles, using cars as focal product. While visual elements like curve lines, grill design, and color predominantly shape consumer perspectives, non-visual factors such as reliability, quality, and ergonomics play a pivotal role in purchasing decisions. Our investigation, involving six industrial experts and over 130 participants, explored non-visual factors affecting consumers’ cognitive perceptions during car purchasing. Through a two-phase experimental approach, we developed a framework to understand the disparities in ranking assigned by consumers and designers to these non-visual factors, revealing perception gaps. Utilizing the rank value methodology, the Pareto principle, and Fuzzy-AHP analysis, we identified mileage/fuel efficiency, safety features, and reliability as dominant factors influencing consumer perceptions. Designers, on the other hand, prioritize safety features, reliability, and quality/warranty. Our findings emphasize the strategic significance for automobile companies to enhance their success rates by prioritizing these key factors, ultimately elevating brand value, profile, and overall financial prosperity.
