Abstract

Resist stitch-dyeing, also known locally as tritik (lit. dots), is resist dye textile weaving technique. Tritik is a method to embellish white cloth by tacking, which is then dyed and removed. The motif is formed after the thread is removed. Tritik methods and techniques are less popular compared to batik or dyed ikat. It is, however, used in making sasirangan cloth, a traditional cloth from South Kalimantan, Indonesia. The stitching has always been done traditionally due to the lack of clear convention on stitching as a resist-media. Thus, development of motif designs is not in full capacity. Taking into consideration the above, this study is carried out to create new geometric patterns using tritik techniques. Qualitative experiment methods are used to obtain ideal stitching parameters, which could later be applied in creating geometric patterns. The use of geometric patterns creates more organized motifs but still showing blurry impression, a distinctive feature of tritik. The combination of gradual colouring and evenly-spaced tacking creates optical illusions on motifs (depth, direction, and motion). The motifs may be applied to fashion products by accentuating optical illusions to create silhouettes on women's clothing. Keywords: geometric; pattern; resist stitch dyeing; sasirangan; tritik.

Abstract

Abstract. Banana bark is one of tropical indigenous natural resources that can be used as main material for many products. Being a fast-growing renewable material, it is durable and has natural patterns that people find visually attractive. Naturally, its textures and patterns are its main values; therefore it has the potential to be developed further. This research is needed to optimize the growth of small craft industries of banana bark, including the community where production activities take place, and also to provide information or reference of banana bark utilizations. Previous experiments conclude that banana bark has porous structure, high flexibility, relatively water-resistant due to its natural wax coating that resists water droplets, unless being washed down immensely. Also, due to its softwood- and paper-like properties, ithas many possibilities to be formed and processed into various functional products, mostly as craft products. In the subsequent study, the research about the utilization of banana bark in small industries starting from the harvesting system, handling problems in raw material supply, applying proper technology in improving the material's quality, improving the human-resource working culture by appropriate technologies, and also innovating the product's designs. The recommended designs can be implemented to improve the performance and qualities of banana bark products. Keywords: applied technology; banana bark; renewable materials; design; sustainability.

Abstract

This research is motivated by a number of outdoor public furniture, which is not functional, not in place and even unused. The expected result is the discovery of a tendency of design criteria to sit to meet the needs of students. "Sunken Court" was the first major project from seven planning areas  and  a case method in this paper. Three theories of human behavior from Elizabeth D. Hutchison, Christopher Alexander and Edward T. Hall are used as an approximation method to observe students activities at seven case areas in Institut Teknologi Bandung. Those theories are used in observation step according to environmental dimensions, time dimensions and personal dimensions, and the results are 15 design principles references about seating facilities from human behavior aspects and produce the tendency of seating facilities design. The outputs of observation from seven case areas are arranged in appendix so it can be used for the next research.

Abstract

Bakaran batik is a batik that is developed in Bakaran Village, Pati Regency at the North Coast of Java. Traditional ornaments in Bakaran batik show no influence from foreign cultures in general coastal batik, but are similar to the ornamentation of the Keraton Surakarta batik. This study aims to describe the elements of ornamentation and aesthetic characteristics of traditional Bakaran and Keraton Surakarta batik, and to identify the cause of the similarity between them. The conclusion is the ornamentation of Bakaran traditional batik and Keraton Surakarta one, have similarities to the main motive of the batik ornaments, that occur between Bakaran traditional batik and Keraton Surakarta one were caused by the trade relations between regions of both batiks in the past. There are also differences that characterize these batiks, the size and shape of the batik motifs on the traditional batik.

Abstract

Visual communication experience that ensues between the picture and the children is an episode that should be experienced long before kindergarten children learn to read. Each visual element in the picture has a causal link that connects to an event.  Joint visual communication experience illustrates visual language strength in delivering messages actively or when they work together.  This experience provides an opportunity for the picture to send messages actively and get children accustomed to get the message and tell the message from the picture they gazed at. This research discussed the importance of storytelling pictures in visual communication experience with children. This research results' are three models of communications between picture and all visual elements and the working method of those models, based on children visual-word language indicators. The dynamics in this communication model show how far the role of child assistants (parents and teachers) in motivating and facilitating the occurence of interaction between the picture and the child independently. This research verified the importance of child activity for gazing the picture which should be executed before the child is able to read letters. This study also illustrated the importance of two key functions of storytelling pictures as an active messenger by gazing the picture and a letter interpreter for learning how to read.

Abstract

Currently motored vehicle has become a necessity for most urban people because the demands of high mobility are performing in their daily activities. Geographical conditions, cultural distinctiveness, economic and lifestyle differences also influence the behavior of its people. Indonesia is a country with a high rate of car sales for multipurpose vehicle (MPV). With this phenomenon, criteria for the Indonesian people about MPV car, with both design aspects and also engineering aspects are no longer controlled by the principal industry in Japan, but should further reflect the desires of consumers in Indonesia. This becomes the basis of the considerations in choosing which vehicle they want to buy. The goal of this research is to identify the factors that influence the occurrence of the difference between consumer choices with a design that has been offered by the manufactures. This study was conducted to prove the hypothesis that car design using ideal values from Japanese country as the main producer of cars in some cases do not have high hopes of being accepted by the Indonesian market, considering several values and cultural differences between ideal values of Japanese car manufactures and conditions of Indonesian people, which resulted in differences of perceptions, between the ideal concept of car design of urban people in Indonesia and the concept that manufactures has offered.

Abstract

The pleasing atmosphere of medical environment is a friendly atmosphere so it can accelerate the adaptation process of patients. However, the medical environment is very often identical with fear, anxiety, and uncertainty that can suppress the immune system so that patients require longer treatment time and even hasten the complications during treatment occur. This study is conducted to analyze how to optimize the application of healing environment interior elements (such: circulation, lighting, color, interior supporting elements: natural elements, the position of social interaction and television) inside the treatment room directly affect the patients psychologically. The research is at Kanjuruhan public hospital which has simple and candid interior physical condition. The results demonstrates that the elements of nature and natural lighting are potential to reduce patient stress, given the daily conditions of people who tend to be close to nature. The differences in economic background, culture, and community demographics would produce a different perception in looking at the most ideal and suitable healing elements for their treatment environment.

Abstract

Raden Saleh is a 19th century Indonesian painter who had the opportunity to master the European paintings in his time. He was born in Terbaya, Semarang on 1807 from a noble family. He then studied painting under the Belgian painter A.A.J. Payen who was assigned by Dutch colonial ruler to capture Indonesian scenery. After studied for some times in Indonesia, he began to travel to Netherlands, Germany, France, and several other European countries and chiseled his name as a famous Romantic painter both in Europe and in Indonesia. This research began from a predicament on how far Romanticism has its influence on Raden Saleh"Ÿs paintings. Romanticism in Raden Saleh"Ÿs works not only characterized by the visual and themes, but also embedded in Raden Saleh"Ÿs ideas and attitude. Raden Saleh, at that time, developed a distinctive style and themes under the Romantic spirit which is mostly a depiction about hunting scenes, allegorical landscape, and dramatic scenes that involves human"Ÿs emotion. Nevertheless the influence of Romanticism is to be found more on Raden Saleh"Ÿs ideas and attitude, such as the idea about the grandeur of nature, exoticism, orientalism, individual freedom, and struggle for liberty.
