Abstract

Cross-border medical tourism can be broadly divided into two types, i.e. price-sensitive and quality sensitive. Price-sensitivity increases the likelihood of “lower cost overseas treatment” and qualitysensitivity promotes “higher cost overseas treatment”. As medical tourism grows in Southeast Asia, home and host countries (a country may be both simultaneously) will be differentially affected. Medical tourism, in actuality an increase in demand for certain kinds of medical services (albeit by foreigners), may accelerate movements of health personnel, i.e., from poorer to richer countries, from the public sector to the private sector within host countries, and from less lucrative to more lucrative sub-sectors within the private sector. Foreign medical care investment may also be enhanced in certain countries. An agenda for research on specific issues such as patient characteristics and treatments likely to be sought is proposed in this article.

Abstract

People in the tourism industry in Luang Prabang have garnered some background, knowledge and experience of the industry. However, they need to improve their abilities in order to keep afloat in a competitive business environment. Developing the labour market in Luang Prabang is difficult, though, because of the lack of an overall development plan, the scarcity of individual motivation, limited budgets, the shortage of qualified people in the tourism management field in either the private or public sectors and limited collaboration for tourism development. Research findings are reported upon concerning these issues and recommendations are provided for rectifying the shortcomings identified and strengthening the sustainable development of the tourism industry of Luang Prabang.

Abstract

Obtaining guest delight has been highly emphasized by every hotel in the present era of intense competition for securing guest loyalty. This study, therefore, aims to show how guest delight is formed in the hotels. It involved interviews of 500 repeat guests of 62 hotels in the 5 star deluxe, 4 star, 3 star, Heritage Grand and unclassified categories in India. Only guests on repeat visit to these hotels were included as sampling elements in this study as guest delight is applicable only to them. It was noticed that 46 variables including food and beverage quality, availability of food and beverage variety, hygiene of food and beverage etc. influence surpassing of guests’ expectations in these hotels. It is established in this study that surpassing of expectations of the guests affect their perception on pleasant surprises which, in turn affect their consequent happiness. Such happiness along with their perceived excitement and perceived positive feelings create a delighting experience for them.

Abstract

This study examines the dimensional structure of the brand loyalty construct in the hotel industry context. Following recent developments in loyalty studies, brand loyalty is proposed as a three-dimensional construct consisting of attitudinal loyalty, conative loyalty, and behavioural loyalty. In addition to directly affecting behavioural loyalty, attitudinal loyalty influences behavioural loyalty indirectly through conative loyalty. This conceptualisation is supported by the statistical analysis and provides an improved of the brand loyalty construct compared to the existing conceptualisations, such as fourstage, three-stage, and two-stage brand loyalty models. This study provides an important contribution in extending an understanding of the complex structure of brand loyalty, especially in a hotel industry context.

Abstract

One of the main concerns in the development of the tourism industry in Malaysia is on the improvement and diversification of tourism “products” in attracting tourists to Malaysia. This is understandable since the tourism industry is expected to generate and maximise foreign exchange earnings, increase income and creating employment. The question of poverty and the needs to encourage the poor to participate in the tourism industry is generally neglected in the formulation of tourism policies and strategies. Thus, the impact of the tourism industry on the poor is left mainly to the “trickling down” effects rather than a deliberate and careful planning to improve the impact of tourism on them. There are now emerging literatures suggesting that there exist a huge potential for making tourism to be effectively work for the poor. Consequently, this raises the need to examine, among others, the participation of the poor in the tourism industry as well as its impact on poverty. In this paper, we explore this issue for the case of Langkawi Island, an island that has been proclaimed as one of the major tourist attractions to Malaysia.

Abstract

Maintaining environmental sustainability has become the main agenda in today’s world, and so as in hotel industry. In Bali, the number of hotels has been increasing significantly. This growth positively correlates with the use of resources to meet the demand of tourists and the environmental damage, on the other hand. Therefore, the issue of environmentally friendly operation is getting prominent in star rated hotels in Bali. The aim of this research was to find out the relationships between the processes and the benefits of environmental management in star rated hotels in Bali. The important aspects of environmental management was covered in this research, namely: 1) Process of environmental management that consists of energy management, water management, wastewater and solid waste management, chemical waste management, and purchasing products for hotel operations; and 2) The benefits of the environmental management that consists of financial benefits, employee satisfaction, guest satisfaction, and the advantages from promotion and publicity. This research collecting data from 126 star rated hotels around Bali, and the data was analyzed by using SEM (Structural Equation Modeling). The model of environmental management in this research shows that the process of environmental management significantly influence the benefits of environmental management.

Abstract

A city can be a place for productive tourism places. Bandung, for example, has become a tourists' city and especially benefited from weekend visitors from Jakarta. Visitors in the city are offered attractions for leisure and consumption. The city's attractions are dominated by heritages: from pattern of street layout to the existence of a distinctive architecture, to the variety of activities to create the city itself as a visitors' experience. These conditions need a deliberate attempt to create the city as multicultural places of consumption for both retail and tourism as part of urban cultural management. This paper examines the creation of the city as a tourism destination. It is argued that changes to the process of capital accumulation in many cities have led to the commodification of place at a local level. Part of this process has been the creation of heritage as a tangible asset and this is linked to changing patterns of consumer retail activity. This paper argued that tourism should not be conceptualized as a distinct activity but rather as a form of consumption in the context of both local and global changes.

Abstract

Fuzzy regression model (FRM) is an alternative to evaluate the relation between variables among the forecasting models, when the data are not sufficient to identify the relation and we have uncertainty in data. Behavior and thinking of the people, with their differences on emotions and intuitions, produce the ambiguity in social studies. Instead of using point estimation in conventional probability theory, fuzzy set theory can be used to granulate a concept into a set with membership function and thus decreases the amount of required data. In the last two decades, Fuzzy Sets Theory that was introduced in 1965 by Prof. Lotfi A. Zadeh has received wide attention particularly with successful applications in various fields ranging from engineering to social science studies. Besides being an alternative to Conventional Regression Model (CRM), the Fuzzy Regression Model (FRM) has the ability to evaluate relationships between variables when the data series are limited and uncertain. Moreover, the fuzzy regression is able to address the ambiguity in the variables, such as human behavior, thinking and subjectivity. In this paper, we estimate the demand model for ecotourism in Malacca state by using FRM as an alternative approach. Results show that trip cost, opportunity cost, time and income are the significant variables that could explain variation in number of trip as dependent variable.

Abstract

This paper investigates the key resources and related key strategies that contribute the most to the enhancement of performance and competitiveness in multinational hotels. Using the interrelated resource and competence based theories of the firm, the case study approach including face-to-face interviews with key personnel in five multinational hotels was adopted. The findings of this research indicate that the key resources most capable of enhancing performance and competitiveness in hospitality organizations are human, organizational, technological, and reputational. Optimal related key strategies exemplified by the multinational hotels include paradigm shifts in employee and customer regard, creation of time as a resource through outsourcing or centralization and, multi-linkages within distribution and promotional networks.

Abstract

It has long been acknowledged that service differentiation through effective market segmentation ensures survivability of the firm in the long run. While voluminous studies on segmentation and providing service differentiation were conducted, little previous research work was done in the context of the airline industry. It is the intention of this paper to examine the needs of the physically challenged individuals and the reasons constraining the industry in fulfilling these needs. This paper will contribute significantly to understanding the needs of the physically challenged individuals and suggest that meeting the needs of these individuals provide sustainable competitive advantage for those who dare to adapt their strategy. Given the little previous researches were conducted in the identification of this potential group of customers, it is no wonder the airline industry is myopic and ill-prepared in meeting the needs of this viable group of customers. This study is also beneficial from a managerial perspective given the implications in assisting the airline operators and marketers to better understand this group of customers and their needs. Particularly specific features identified in this paper can help increase the overall position of airline operators that would appeal to this growing segment.
