Abstract

A study on population dynamics of Calophyllum soulattri Burm and Swintonia schwenkii T.&B in Pinang-Pinang rain forest have been carried out from September 2012 to Februari 2013 by using descriptive method. Data were collected after 23 years of demographic data available. We found that the highest seedling mortality of Calophyllum soulattri was at the height class of 11-30 cm (9.4 %) and the lowest was at the height class of 71- 80 cm (3.4 %). The heighest seedling mortality of Swintonia schwenkii was  at the height class of 11-20 cm (10.3 %) and the lowest was at height class 51-60 cm (2.9 %). Relative height growth rate of Calophyllum soulattri seedling was at the height class of 21-30 cm (0.38 cm/cm/yr). Whereas relative height growth rate of Swintonia schwenkii seedling was at the height class of 31-40 cm (0.21 cm/cm/yr). Keywords: dynamics population, Calophyllum soulattri, Swintonia schwenkii, mortality, relative high growth rate.

Abstract

An inventory of ants from subfamily Formicinae at Lembah Anai Nature Reserve, West Sumatra was conducted from June to November 2013. Quadra Protocol methods were used to collect ant samples, i.e; hand collecting, honey bait trap, soil core sampling and leaf litter sifting along two 180 m transects. Those methods were applied at two different habitats (forest edge and forest interior). We found 163 individuals of Formicinae which belong to 23 species, 8 genera and 3 tribes. Each species was described based on morphological characteristics. Keywords: ants, Formicinae, identification, Lembah Anai Nature Reserve

Abstract

This experiment aimed to determine growth rate of farm swamp eel under various food supply. The experiment used Completely Random Design (CRD) with four treatments and three replications. The treatments were various food supply i.e: earthworms, snails, floating pellets and sinking pellets. The results showed that various foods gave significant difference on the growth rate of the eel in term of absolute weight, daily growth, food conversionand food efficiency. There were nosignificant difference on absolute length and survival rate of the eel. The highest value of the absolute weight and daily growth during 60 days feeding was found at feeding earthworm. The highest value of food efficiency and food conversion was found at feeding sinking pellets. Keyword: swamp eel, physiology, growth, food.

Abstract

The vegetation analysis of weed from Coffee Arabica (Coffea arabica L.) traditional farm in Balingka, Agam has been conducted from February to May 2014. The purpose of this study was to determine the composition and structure of weed on the farm. Vegetation was sampled systematically using square plot (1x1 m2) with a total 32 plots. The results found that composition of the weed in the farm were 11 families, 21 genera and 25 species. A total number of individuals were 3114. Borreria laevis dominated at the coffee farm with the highest SDR (Summed Dominance Ratio) (22.809%). Diversity index (H') of the weed in coffee farm was 2.04. Keywords: weed, Coffea arabica L., composition, structure

Abstract

A study on population and habitat of forest softshelled turtle (Dogania subplana: Reptilia: Trionychidae) has been conducted from January to March 2014. This study aimed to understand population abundance and to describe non-natural and natural habitats. Population abundances were found out through searching, counting and release methods. Habitats were described based on physic-chemical, potential food-resource and vegetation factors. The turtles were more abundance in non-natural habitat (33 individual of 640 m²) than natural habitat (5 individual of 5.100 m²). The turtles were abundance in sand and gravel streams of non-natural habitat and sand and rocky streams of natural habitat. The turtles prefered in slow streams (0-10 cm/s) and neutral pH (7.1-7.6).Keywords: population abundance, non-natural habitat, natural habitat, Dogania subplana.

Abstract

An inventory of ants from dragon fruit plantation at Lubuk Minturun and Ketaping, West Sumatra was made from July to September 2013 by using modified Quadra Protocol methods including honey bait trap, soil core sampling and direct collection. Twelve species of ants that belong to four subfamilies, 10 genera and 2807 individuals were collected from both locations. The highest number of species was found in Myrmicinae (four species), followed by Dolichoderinae (three species), Formicinae (three species) and the lowest number of species was found in Ponerinae (one species). Each species was described based on morphological characteristics. Keywords: ant, inventory, dragon fruit plantation, quadra protocol method

Abstract

An experimental study on the growth of rubber seedling (Hevea brasiliensis Mull Arg.) after inoculated with various doses of indigineous Arbuscular Mycorrizhal Fungy (AMF) from Biology Forest Research Center (FRCB) Andalas University Padang has been done from February to September 2013 in wire house and Plant Physiology Laboratory, Biology Department, Andalas University, Padang. The study aimed to find appropriate doses of indigineous Arbuscular Mycorrizhal Fungy (AMF) to growth rubber seedling. The experimental used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with four treatments (control, 10, 20, and 30 g inoculants) and six replications. The results showed that 10 g inoculant gave significant effect to growth and dry weight of rubber stem due to high percentage of root infection. However rubber assosiatian with mycorrizha are less dependency. Keywords : rubber, AMF, inoculant, seedling growth

Abstract

A study on social network based on grooming interactions among males of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) at Gunung Meru, Padang has been conducted from August to October 2015. The dominance relationship determined by submissive interactions among 17 adult males. Submissive interactions were recorded using ad libitum observation and grooming interactions by continuous recording method. The results showed that the dominance hierarchy among males was linear (Matman linearity index: h' = 0.97). Alfa male appeared to have the highest centrality index among all the males. This study indicates that individuals attained higher dominance hierarchy tend to have higher degree of centrality.
