Abstract

Currently, there are a lot of activities in Sirandah Island, such as tourism activities and deforestation to support the activities. Mangrove forest distruction makes a useable area might have negative effect to mangrove ecosystem itself or mollusc community. This research was conducted on mangrove roots area from February until October 2016. The aim of this research is to know the diversity of Gastropods on the roots of the mangrove. This research was conducted using survey method and purposive sampling method to collecting data. We recorded 8 genera of Gastropods belong to 8 families, named Cerithium, Conus, Ellobium, Littorina, Melongena, Nerita, Cymatium and Turbo. The highest abundance was found in the genus of  Littorina with 59.33 individuals/tree. Based on location, abundance ranged from 4.33-60.33 individuals/tree with the highest abundance on mangrove roots of Barringtonia asiatica. Diversity indices of Gastropods on mangrove roots in Sirandah Island ranged from 0.77 to 1.42 which is relative low range.

Abstract

The research about effect of Nitrogen fertilizer and stress water on the growth and artemisinin content of Artemisia vulgaris L. has been conducted from December 2015 to March 2016 in Screen House and Plant Physiology Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of  Mathematics and Natural Science, Andalas University, Padang. The purpose of this research were to the effect of  Nitrogen fertilizer, stress water, and their interaction between on the growth and artemisinin content of A. vulgaris. This research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) in factorial with  four treatments ad three replications. The result showed that the number of leaves, plant height, length of roots, fresh weight, dry weight and of Artemisia vulgaris L. were increased significantly on N fertilizer treatments. The treatment of stress water 60% of volume capacity gave significantly effect on numbers of leaves and the highest content of Artemisinin was 80% volume capacity. The interaction of  N fertilizer and stress water did not showed significantly effect on the growth and artemisinin content of Artemisia vulgaris L.

Abstract

The Research about the effects of extract from the invasive plant leaves of Mikania micrantha Kunth. and non-invasive plant leaves of Cosmos sulphureus Cav. on the germination of corn (Zea mays L.) has been conducted in July 2016 in Plant Physiology and Tissue Culture Laboratory, Biology Department, Mathematics and Natural Science Faculty, Andalas University, Padang. The aim of this research was to compare the effect of extract from the leaves of plants M. micrantha and C. sulphureus with several concentrations on the germination of corn. The research used experimental method with Completely Randomized Design (CRD) on Nested, 9 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments were factor A (type of plants, a1= Mikania micrantha and a2= Cosmos sulphureus) and factor B (leaf extract concentration, b0= 0%, b1= 20%, b= 40%, b3= 60%, b4= 80%). The results showed that the extract of the leaves from M. micrantha affected to reduced the fresh weight plants at concentration of 20%, where as in leaf extract of C. sulphureus affected to reduced the fresh weight plants at concentration of 40%.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to know the composition and structure of macrozoobenthic community in Suir Stream at palm oil plantation area of PT. Tidar Kerinci Agung (TKA) has been conducted in February 2016 using survey method and purposive sampling technique in collecting data. Study sites consist of four stations based on condition around the stream. Macrozoobenthic community were sampled using surber net method with triplicate and accompanying physic-chemical measurements on each station. The results of this research show that 54 genera of macrozoobenthic were found consist of Insecta 44 genera, Oligochaeta 8 genera, Turbellaria and Gastropoda one genus respectively. The density of macrozoobenthic community range from 259.26-507.41 ind/m2 with average 381 ind/m2. The highest was found in station II dan the lowest was in station IV. The dominant genera (relative abundance > 10 %) in station I was Eukefferiella, station II Eukefferiella and Antocha, station III Tubificidae and Lumbriculus, station IV Eukiefferiella, Pseudocleon and Haplotaxis. The diversity of macrozoobenthic community was classified as moderate (H’= 1.25-2.94) and high equitability (E=0.54-0.84).

Abstract

An inventory of Carnivore species in Malampah Nature Reserve, West Sumatra had been conducted between Mei-August 2016. After a total of 303 trap nights, this study documented 19 species of mammals from 3 families of which 6 species from Carnivora. The documented carnivores were Catopuma temminckii (17 photos), Neofelis diardi (5 photos), Pardofelis marmorata (2 photos), Helarctos malayanus (3 photos), Paguma larvata (5 photos), and Prionodon linsang (1 photo). The finding on Carnivore was then discussed to highlight their implications for conservation.

Abstract

Effect of giberelin (GA3) concentration on growth and yield of Chinese kale (Brassica oleracea L. Var alboglabra) in various medium using hydroponic wick system . This research conducted from April until July 2016 in Wire House and Plant Physiology Laboratory, Department of Biology, Faculty of  Mathematics and Natural Science, Andalas University. The purposes of this research were to obtain GA3 concentration and planting medium that accelerate growth and yield of Chinese kale and determine the interaction between GA3 and planting medium to the gowth and yield of Chinese kale planted using hydroponics wick system. This research used Completely Randomized Design (CRD) in factorial with three replications, as the first factor were concentration of GA3 (0 ppm, 20 ppm, 40 ppm and 60 ppm) and the second factor were medium (zeolite, sand, husk and sawdust). The best result in accelerated the growth of Chinese kale was the treatment at the concentration of 60 ppm GA3 and zeolite was suitable medium to Chinese kale growth. This research found the interaction between GA3 and medium on the length of the roots Chinese kale used hydroponic wick system.

Abstract

‘Limau kacang’ has been a specialty crop in the Solok region of West Sumatra. The spread of Citrus reticulata Blanco is still experiencing barriers and the population is threatened with extintion. Overcome the problem is done propagation of Citrus reticulata Blanco vegetatively with shoot cutting. The experiment on the influence of different growing media and hormonal growth of coconut water to the shoot cutting of Citrus reticulata Blanco has been accomplished at kanagarian Kacang Kecamatan X Koto Singkarak, Kabupaten Solok, this experiment started in June to October 2017. This research used Randomized Completely Block Design (RCBD) Factorial. The first factor was four different growing media (soil, soil : manure, soil : husk, soil : sand) while the second factor was two level coconut water concentrations (0% and 25%) with three replication. Variables analiyzed were the survival percentage, while emerging shoots, shoot length, number of leaf, number of shoot, number of root and root length. The result of this research showed that A3B0 treatment (planting media soil : manure without coconut water as hormonal growth) gave the best influence to the growth of shoot cuttings of Citrus reticulata Blanco.

Abstract

An isolation of degrading bacteria of Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) was conducted from May to October 2014 at the Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Andalas University. This study aimed to describe the characteristic of the bacteria which can degradate the POME. The result obtained five isolates ie BLS1, BLS2, BLS3, BLS4 and BLS5 and their characters were rod-shaped (basil), gram-positive, motile, positive catalase and forming endospores.                                                                                                        Keywords:       isolation, characterization, degrading bacteria, POME

Abstract

A study on the characterization of thermophilic bacteria in producing neutral protease enzyme has been conducted in the Laboratory of Microbiology, Biology Department, Andalas University from October 2013 to March 2014. The bacteria were isolated from a hot spring at Sungai Medang, Kerinci. Water samples  were collected purposively based on gradient temperature at the hot spring which ranged from 450C to 880C. Colony of the bacteria were inoculated using nutrient agar (NA). We obtained 10 isolates of neutral protease enzyme from the thermophilic bacteria with proteolytic index ranged from 0.27 to 3.89. The MIV-14 isolate has the highest proteolytic index which collected from 830C of the hot spring. Characterization of macroscopic, microscopic and biochemical tests were reported. Generally, the colonies have round shape, wavy edge, white, producing endospores and motile. Keywords: characterization, neutral protease, thermophilic bacteria.

Abstract

A study on the influence of abiotic factors in producing protease by bacterial isolates M1-23 was conducted from May 2013 to December 2013 in the  Laboratory of Microbiology, Department of  Biology, Andalas University, Padang. This study aimed to find optimal conditions by isolate M1-23 to produce protease. This study consists of two stages. First stage used to produce the best protease and the second used to increase enzim homogenity. The result showed that the highest enzyme activity was  at medium temperature 550 C and pH 7.5. The best homogenity was produced at 125 rpm of agitation process.
