Abstract

Study of symptom and disease severity of stem spotting disease on red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus, L.) was conducted from December 2012 to February 2013 in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatera. Laboratory and screen house work were carried out at Solok Tropical Fruit Research Institute and microbiology laboratory of Biology Department at Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science, Andalas University, Padang. This study used direct observation method and the data was analyzed descriptively. Objectives of the research were to characterize and identify the causes of stem spotting disease symptom and then to measure disease incidence in production centers of dragon fruit in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra. The result showed that percentage of stem spotting disease of dragon fruit was 99,5% while disease severity index of it was 2,2 (moderate severity). Disease symptoms were spotting/patches of brown to black round surrounded by yellow halo. The pathogen was identified as Colletotrichum gloeosporoides. Abstract

The study of Balanophoraceae in West Sumatra has been conducted from January to May 2012. This study used observation and direct collection method at seven locations in West Sumatra and continued in Herbarium Andalas University (ANDA). The result indicated that three spesies of Balanophora (B. elongata, B. indica, and B.dioica) were identified. B. elongata has 9 female individuals, B. indica has 2 male individuals and 1 female individual, B. dioica 1 male individual and 1 female individual. The tuber was significant character to distinguish three studied spesies of Balanophora. B. elongata and B. dioica had a branched tuber but no branched tuber was detected in B. indica. The leaf color and the type of inflorescence were also valuable characters to differ between these species. It was assumed that most of the Balanophora species were found in habitat where the precipitation is 2500-5000 mm/year along mountain rain forest in Sumatra. Keywords: spesies, Balanophora, character, habitat, west sumatra

Abstract

Mt. Singgalang have high diversity of flora and fauna, which also drives the high diversity of small terrestrial mammals. A study on diversity of small terrestrial mammals (Muridae, Erinaceidae and Soricidae) has been caried out from July to August 2012 by using an extensive trapping method. This research used 30 snap traps and 10 20L pit fall trap drift fences in 360 trap-nights. Fourty individu of small terrestrial mammals have been caught, belong to six genera, three families and two orders. Those species were Hylomys suillus, Crocidura beccarii, Crocidura neglecta, Leopoldamys sabanus, Maxomys hylomyoides, Maxomys surifer, Niviventer rapit, and Sundamys infraluteus. Pit fall trap drift fences was more effective method to trap Crocidura spp. Keywords: species identification, small terrestrial mammals, Mt.Singgalang

Abstract

Red dragon fruit Hylocereus polyrhizus is the fruit with a high value in industry. However, since the past two years, the fruit is being attacked by some pathogens and cause severe disease in West Sumatra. One of the diseases is black rot disease. The purpose of the research was to characterize the symptoms and disease severity of the black disease stem rot on red dragon fruit. The research was conducted from December 2012 until February 2013 and was taken place at Solok Tropical Fruit Research Institute and Microbiology laboratory of Biology Department Faculty of Mathematic and Natural Science, Andalas University, Padang, West Sumatera. This study was using direct observation method and the data were analyzed descriptively. The result showed that the percentage of the black disease of stem rot of dragon fruit was 47.3 % while disease severity index of it was 1.22. The isolated pathogen on the black disease stem rot of dragon fruit were Fusarium sp. and Xanthomonas sp.Keywords: Dragon fruit, black rot disease, disease severity

Abstract

The research related to the isolation and partial characterization of indigenous fermenting bacteria from durian fruit (Durio zibethinus Murr.) was conducted from May to August 2012 in Laboratory of Microbiology, Biology Department, Andalas University. Experimental method was used and was descriptively analyzed. Ripe durian fruit contain indigenous fermenting as well as nonfermenting bacteria, that was recognized from halozone around the colony on modified GTA medium. Indigenous fermenting bacterias on the flesh of durian fruit have been characterized as Gram-positive, bacil, no endospores, motile and catalase positive. These isolates are proteolytics, amylolytics and cellulolytics and have no ability to hydrolyze fats and alcohol. Keywords : durian, fermenting, indigenous bacteria

Abstract

An experiment on in vitro root induction of Tetrastigma rafflesiae Miq. on Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium suplemented with several concentrations of Indole-3-Butyric Acid (IBA) had been done from February to April 2013. The aims of this experiment was to determine physiological responses of T. rafflesiae’s shoot to the IBA on half strength media of MS for root induction stages. The experiment used a completely randomized design in seven treatments and four replications. The treatment was the addition of IBA in several concentration (i.e. 0.0; 0.5; 1.0; 1.5; 2.0; 2.5 and 3.0 mg/l). The results showed 0.5 mg/l suplemented IBA was more effective and efficient in root induction of shoot then other concentrations. It influenced the average number of roots (12.5 root/plantlet), the average length of root (4.98 cm) and the morphological of plantlets. The result indicated that plantlet of T. rafflesiae generated in in vitro have a higher possibility of artificial culture and give light for future conservation of Rafflesia. Keywords : Tetrastigma rafflesiae Miq., root induction, Indole-3-Butyric-acid.

Abstract

Ethnobotany studies of Balimau tradition in Pariaman has been conducted from July to October 2012. The purpose of this study was to determine the plant species and their significance used for the Balimau tradition in Pariaman. This study was conducted using survey methods, interview, and direct plant sample collections in the field. The samples were identified at Herbarium Universitas Andalas (ANDA). The cultural significance used of plant for Balimau tradition was determined using Index of Cultural Significance (ICS). The result showed that 13 species belonging to 10 families were identified as plant species that used in Balimau tradition, namely: Cananga odorata (Annonaceae), Michelia alba (Magnoliaceae), Michelia champaca (Magnoliaceae), Jasminum sambac (Oleaceae), Pandanus amaryllifolius (Pandanaceae), Vetiveria zizanioides (Poaceae), Rosa hybrida (Rosaceae), Ixora javanica (Rubiaceae), Citrus aurantifolia (Rutaceae), Citrus hystrix (Rutaceae), Murraya paniculata (Rutaceae), Mimusops elengi (Sapotaceae), and Alpinia sp. (Zingiberaceae). Citrus aurantifolia has the highest ICS value indicated that the species was commonly used in the ritual of Balimau.
