Abstract

In general, female ulama (scholars) have not received acknowledgment in the tradition of Islamic scholarship despite the fact that many female ulama play an important role in the field. There has been reluctance to admit the female author. Not surprisingly, Fathimah binti Abdul Wahab Bugis, who originally authored Parukunan Melayu, is neglected precisely because her name does not appear in the book, since the book’s authorship is often associated with a male ulama, namely Mufti Jamâluddîn. This article aims to uncover the role of Fathimah in writing the book Parukunan Melayu. Through historical and documentary methods, the study demonstrates that the book was written by Fathimah and yet female voices have a little weight in the work. There is a great part of the work that just repeats what has been echoed in the works of al-Sayyid al-‘Alawî, Syekh Muhammad Arsyad, and Syekh Nûr al-Dîn al-Rânîrî. This does not mean, however, that there is simply no voice for women. It is likely that Fâthimah’s thought have been reflected in the work. However, based on intertextuality analysis, such thoughts are not typical of Fathimah’s, but are derived from her predecessors’ among ulama. Keywords

Abstract

Thought Jurisprudence of Tuan Guru Bengkel which was built in locality-based fiqh in the worship and muamalah has raised controversy. Through the library research on these thoughts, reinforced by interviews, content analysis, and external and internal criticism, the following results were obtained: first, local jurisprudence thought of Tuan Guru Bengkel was the response to the social dynamics of the Sasak people of Lombok at the time. The concept of how propaganda was taught by the Prophet Muhammad’s kha>tib alna> s hasba ‘uqu>lihim had been practiced by Tuan Guru Benkel; second, the process of tafhi>m al-ummah by Tuan Guru Bengkel in the areas of worship and muamalah was based on strong arguments to adopt the Sha>fi’iy school of thought which, although not binding on anyone to adopt other school of thoughts on conditions that they know the details of their argument. His consistency in following the school of thought indicated his fat}anah to provide the firm attitude of the Sasak people of Lombok at that time in order to arrive at the stability of heart in worship and muamalah. His adaptive and contextual propagation made him as one of the pioneers of Islamic revival and renewal in Lombok.

Abstract

The Law Number 20 in 2003 about Indonesian education system, the definition of teacher is a professional who plans and carries out a good teaching and learning process. However, during the implementation not all of the teachers do as good as the law and the people have been expected, especially in preparing and making the lesson plan. In order to justify this phenomenon, this research is carried out and this research also applies qualitative descriptive research method. This research shows that first, the competence level of Islam religion teachers (fiqh, Aqidah – Akhlak, Qur’an Hadith, History of Islamic Culture and Arabics) both in Madrasa Aliyah and Madrasa Tsanawiyah in Pondok Pesantren Al –Aziziyah Gunung Sari is quite low. Second, the lack of teachers’ ability in designing and making teaching and learning process is an impact of teachers’ understanding and skill in designing and carrying out teaching and learning process in the classroom. Such conditions are the implication of less teachers’ improvisation due to the lack of training and teaching skill improvement.

Abstract

Hermeneutical method introduced by Farid Esack promotes a model of interpretation that combines texts and contexts. This means that interpretation begins from texts and is applied to contexts and then moves from contexts back to texts. It is thus a dialectical process where understanding of contexts should be confirmed to texts and the result of this process is used as a guideline of practice. This hermeneutic is grounded on some Qur’anic key words, such as taqwa, tauhid, al-nas, al-mustadl’afûn fi al-ardh, ‘adl, qisth, and jihad, to avoid arbitrary interpretation of the Scripture. Applying Esack’s hermeneutic to interreligious relations, this study argues that interreligious cooperation between Muslims and non-Muslims is not forbidden but encouraged. This conclusion comes from the understanding of the verses pertaining to plurality of religions, religious affinities, and the story of Moses exodus and Israel children from Egypt. In these three examples, the Qur’an explicitly and implicitly gives respects and admits the truth of religions. Therefore, interreligious cooperation between Muslims and non-Muslims should be built up on this theological consciousness.

Abstract

This research is to answer fundamental issues in conflict management institutions of Islamic education in Pondok Pesantren Nahd}atul Wat}an namely: first,. source of authority and authority in managing the praxis of Islamic educational institutions in boarding Nahdlatul Wathan East Lombok NTB causes of conflict and management of educational institutions that are in conflict Nahd}atul Wat}an. To answer the key question is, non-Marxist-structuralist theory as a tool of analysis used in answering the above problems. Theory, among others, presented by Ralf Dahrendorf, who stated that the society united by a lack of freedom imposed. Certain position in society to delegate power and authority to another position, the difference in the distribution of authority becomes the determining factor of social conflict sistemati. Various positions in the community have the quality of different authorities. Authority does not lie inside the individual but in the position of this research uses a qualitative approach, data obtained from in-depth interviews (indepthinterview), observation and documentation, then interpreted, or translated to language researchers. These data to generate and describe the various conditions and situations none of the research object, and connecting these variables, and further description will be generated about the object of research, then the conclusions will be obtained. Our study argues that the organisiation has somewhat succeeded in moving toward the latter direction so much so that in the past 12 years or so it has built 820 schools according to Pancor group or 900 schools according to Anjani group across the provinse of Nusa Tenggara Barat.

Abstract

One salient feature of the approach to the Qur’anic exegesis among Shi’i is concerned with the interpretation of the inner meaning (esoteric) of the Qur’an. This study discusses the argument of the esoteric exegesis in the work of Allamah al-Majlisiy, Bihâr al-Anwâr. He was an influential Muslim scholar in the era of Syah Sulayman and Syah Husayn of the Safawid. The purpose of the work was to disseminate Shi’i doctrine to the people. The work highlights the esoteric interpretation of Imam and therefore it was considered as the continuation of the Imam Ja’far esoteric tradition. The study demonstrates that one fundamental characters of the esoteric interpretation in the work is its concern on the proportional and balanced element between esoteric and exoteric interpretation. According to al-Majlisiy, the Qur’an contains both inner and outer meanings and dimensions. However, the knowledge about the inner and outer dimensions of the Qur’an exclusively belongs to Imam; none knows such dimensions except Imam. The main focus of al-Majlisiy esoteric interpretation are about leadership (imâmah) such as the authority of Imam, Imam as the heir and sole interpreter of the Qur’an, the Prophet family circle (ahl bayt) and the obligation to comply Imam. This kind of Shi’i interpretation enriches the tradition of the Qur’anic exegesis in Islam.

Abstract

Jihad in Islam is understood in various ways by Muslims, including the Salafi Congregation. The group is seen as a group that understands the concept of jihad literally, so it is assumed to have a relationship with the idea of radicalism in Indonesia. To explore this problem, library research is used with content analysis approach. The results showed that in giving interpretations of jihad, Salafi applied textual interpretation, i.e. according to the meaning of the text. Therefore, jihad for the Salafi is divided into jihad t}alab and jihad difa’. In the case of jihad thalab (attack), Salafi’s attitude is divided into two: Salafi Yamani who hold the view that jihad is not necessary t}alab (attack) not even be in the way of bombing. As for Salafi Jihadists, the war is still going on against “enemies of Islam”, then any way to do is permitted including terror. On the other hand, jihad difa’ is defensive when attacked by another group.

Abstract

The research analyzes ijtihâd (legal reasoning) ofMuhammadiyah in determining the hujjiyat al-hadîts (the prophetictradition as authoritative source) in the Majelis Tarjih Decisionsfrom 1929 to 1972, pertaining to ‘aqîdah (theology) and ‘ibâdah(worship). Building on inter-textual analysis, Takhrîj (verification)al-hadîts and coherence analysis, the study finds three importantthings: First, Muhammadiyah employed two different strategiesin holding the hadis as authoritative source; regarding theology, ituses khabar mutawatir, and al-sunnah al-shahîhah concerningworship. It emphasizes on continuation of transmission and criteriaof transmitters as ‘adl (just) and dlabit (entrusted), but less on thecritics of matn (substance) of tradition. Second, there are somedifferences of matn al-hadîts in the collection used by TarjihDecisions. In Kitab Iman, 6 traditions are classified as âhâd(transmitted only through one companion), but none of them isdla‘îf (weak). Meanwhile, regarding the issue of worship, thereare 2 weak traditions. Third, theoretically, the Muhammadiyahlegal reasoning produces sound legal rules despite the fact thatthese are too general to use and thus less useful in some respects.The Muhammadiyah ijtihâd in the field of hadîts can be classifiedinto tarjîhî (selection), or even taqlîdî (blind acceptance). Abstract

This study describes the manager’s effort of waqf (endowment) to make it productive. The study focuses on the ways in which the waqf manager (nadzir) endeavors to get or expand funds to support for the pesantren’s independence. Using qualitative method, this field research examines the waqf management in two pesantrens as a cases study in Tebuireng in Jombang and Gontor in Ponorogo, both in East Java. The study finds three models of endowment management; first, the manager uses available potential waqf funds or appointing a new manager. Second, the manager creates new resources taken from productive waqf funds, and third, monetizes non-financial waqf resources.

Abstract

The amount of research publication has been increasing, especially in Islam education area, in one side it can be made by high intellectual dynamics indicator in IAIN Mataram. But on the other side, map of the dynamics isn’t yet read clearly in study object aspect, used approach, and also conducted study type. This condition, can implicate its direction and policy of development the Islamic education. To comprehend the mentioned, the method used is bibliography research (research library), include the analysis contents. Result of research show: firstly, object study aspect, study of Islamic education at periodically in IAIN Mataram which dominant express the philosophy aspect or idea of education of Islam as study object; secondly, its study object, from study type, the concept Islamic education has publicized Islam is periodically in IAIN Mataram, showing still its strength in theoretical study, include the field research, and library research; Third, parallel both aspect above, showing from applied the study approach, the tendency of study pattern education of Islam the lecturer of IAIN Mataram, can divide in a few pattern: (a) Pragmatic pattern, for having the adoptive character and also justificative; ( b) Idealist pattern, the study of al-Qur’an and Hadits and classic idea in more pre-eminent position to explain (non replying) a number of aspect / problem of Islamic education Islam; (c) Elective pattern (alliance of idealist pattern and pragmatic pattern); and (d) Empiric descriptive pattern.
