Abstract

This article discusses three main issues. First, symbolic construction of the hajj among the Bugis; Second, the interaction of social and cultural construction of the Bugis; and third the meaning of the hajj and its implication for the whole cultural system of the Bugis. Building on the theory of symbolic interaction, this qualitative research argues that the high number of hajj does not automatically relate to the religiosity of the people performing it. For the Bugis, the hajj embodies complex meanings which signify symbolic transformation of Bugis self-personality. The Bugis are excessively obsessed by the hajj’s symbols, such as clothe, attributes and a title attired and received after performing this ritual. To the Bugis, the hajj is a dream that they have envisioned since childhood. After they get married or reach thirty years old, the appeal to perform the hajj become stronger. The eagerness to conduct this ritual seems to be more tangible especially for unmarried women. By holding the title as Haji, one who has visited Mecca to do the hajj, the Bugis deserve two titles; religious as panrita (ulama) and cultural as to sugi (rich). Therefore, to the Bugis in Bone, the hajj escorts them to attain the highest personal transformation.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the view of the NU kyai, who are the board members of the organization. The focus of the study is on the formalization of Islamic criminal law. The study maps out the typology of thought of the NU kyai regarding Jakarta Charter in the state constitution, the raising of sharîa regulations and by laws in several regions, and the endorsement of Anti Pornography Act. The study shows that the NU kiai conceive of the formalization of Islamic Sharia in Indonesia regarding Islamic criminal law within the framework of preserving the nation and its socio-culture, namely defending the unity of Indonesia and its Pancasila as an ideology. In this perspective, the relation of the state and religion is symbiotic where both are mutually dependent. However, they differ in terms of giving priority between symbiotic formalism and symbiotic substantive within the state-religion relation. Regarding socio-cultural context, their perceptions come under three categories: idealism, transformism, and pragmatism.

Abstract

Islam revealed its characteristics as a religion that defenses against the elements of humanity. Historically, the values were applied in life since the beginning of the existence of Islam in this earth. Equality before the law, protection of society from tyranny, and protection guarantee of basic rights, are some scratches of uncontested history, from the Prophet Muhammad’s prophetic treatise that concerns with the existence of these human values. Disclosure of this fact was done through historical studies, with emphasis on the sources of the documents (relevant books), using content analysis. The results showed that the maqa>s}id al-shari’ah was a strong pillar for the necessity of implementation in life, because it was inherent to the existence of Islam as a religion and civilization, as well as experimentation of Mi>tha> q Madi> nah. But the dynamics of history and politics played its part to determine the “face” of the embodiment of universal values, which implies a social atmosphere.

Abstract

In 2014, Indonesia conducted the fourth Indonesian president election. This contestation not only engaging power issue as the goal, media as the instrument, but also the strengthening of theology of religion issue. After carrying out a research with qualitative approach and library research method, the researcher concluded that media had significant role either to deliver the information about Indonesian president election process or to deliver some issues which had deliberately generated on behalf of certain parties. The existence of media has replaced the function of political party in persuading and influencing the voters. Embodied in media, religion and its generated symbols became sources of legitimation to retake or to defend the status quo by most of political elites. Thus religion had become effective political resources to the elites or political actors to gain electoral support or obtaining votes in such contestation and succession. Religion otherwise has been able to be a decisive tools to delegitimize power of an ongoing regime.

Abstract

Some experts argue that Islam initially spreading in the archipelago was highly influenced by Sufism. One of the advantages of the approach taken by Sufis was that Islam was relatively tolerant with local culture. Because of such an approach, various local people could easily accept Islam, including those coming from rural and remote areas. Some Muslim religious scholars (ulama) recorded this Islamization in their works and manuscripts. One of the manuscripts was written by Abdul Malik bin Haji Abu Bakar Krui Penengahan Lahai. This important document was found in an inland area of West Kalimantan. Through philological and historical examinations to this manuscript, this study finds that Sufism that was spreading in that area was affiliated to Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah sufi order. The text explicitly refers to Fath al-‘Ârifin work, written by Khatib Sambas, the founder of the Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah sufi order. One important teaching offered by this Sufism is the integration between sharia and tasawuf. The text also reveals that the spread of Islam did not neglect to accommodate local culture.

Abstract

Shifting paradigm and social labeling towards tuan guru in Lombok have commonly led to ambiguity and overlap. This is mainly caused by varied contributing factors such as social and religious status, knowledge, attitudes, teaching activity in Islamic boarding schools, preaching activities that one engage. Even political interest contribute to the changing predicate of tuan guru that is labeled to someone. As a result, this sacred social and religious predicate widens and may be used by one who has ideally not reached the status. No wonder, there are lots of tuan gurus. Considering this phenomena, this research aims at decribing normative discourse of the predicate of tuan guru and then to look at how this discourse is empirically debated among Sasaknese. The research employs sociological approach and uses inductivedescriptive analysis. The researh shows that one who has a predicate as a tuan guru should have deep knowledge, individual and social piety, charisma and is socialy accepted. This predicate also requires that one have performed pilgrimage, be able to read Islamic classical books, posses Islamic educational institution, and have a high social commitment to the society.

The existence and purpose of human creation comprises individual responsibility in all aspects of life. The purpose and responsibility indicated the human functions that make its existence become meaningful. The method used is the library research, where the al-Quran as the main document. In the implementation, the author focused on verses that explicitly show the conception of human deeds and accountability, more patterned on scientific thematic interpretation. Responsibility in the Qur’an is grouped in two categories: First, individual responsibility against him personally, and second, human responsibility to others and the environment (social) in which he lived. The existence of such responsibilities is as a consequence of the “freedom” of man in actualizing its potential to do good and evil

Abstract

In its initial establishment, the education offered by the Nahdlatul Wathan, a local Islamic socio-religious organization, received a very small response from people in Lombok. It was even seen controversial in some instances because the purpose of the education was conceived of being contrary to the fundamental principle of local education. The question is then how the educational institutions affiliated with the Nahdlatul Wathan have survived so far? This study demonstrates that the education promoted by the Nahdlatul Wathan has successfully assured the people about some crucial issues. First, the meaning of education is to humanize students (humans) through intensive programs of developing their potencies for their future. Second, the education contributes to the dissemination of positive values and functions as formation of intellectuality, creativity and proficiency. Third, the ultimate objective of education is to reach prosperity in this world and hereafter. Fourth, the teacher has responsibility to forge their pupils to reach educational goals. Furthermore, the teacher in the Nahdlatul Wathan’s concept of education must master relevant sciences and knowledge and have high moral and spiritual standards. Fifth, students must live in a good environment that can make teaching and learning processes successful.
