Abstract

Yellow passion fruit contains carotenoids and polyphenols which are believed to be used as alternative treatments. Yellow passion fruit is thought to provide anti- inflammatory effects. The objective was to determine the efficacy of giving yellow passion fruit extract to inflammation seen from monocyte counts. This study used 12 male Wistar rats were divided into normal groups, treatment groups, and control groups. In the treatment group, yellow passion fruit extract was given 100% concentration. On the 1st, 3rd, and 7th day the blood edge of the rat was taken and the number of monocyte cell counts was performed. Based on the results of One Way Anova analysis there were differences in the number of monocyte cells between all groups. Yellow passion fruit extract (Passiflora edulis Sims) is efficacious as anti-inflammatory due to a decrease in the number of monocytes.

Abstract

The use of Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) has some limitation, such as water sensitivity which leads to formation of microleakage due to shrinkage and brittle. Incorporation of 0.04 wt% bioactive glass nano silica (BAG) with GIC enhances its bioactivity to forming hydroxycarbonate apatite (HCA) leading to preventing of marginal gap formation. The objective this study was To determine the difference of microleakage means value between GIC and GIC which has been added by BAG from bagasse. In this study making BAG from bagasse, than choose the samples (24 bovine) randomly and grouping them to be 4 groups, which are group 1, GIC; group 2, GIC+Vaseline, group 3, GIC+BAG; group 4 GIC+BAG+Vaseline. All of the samples are supposed to be preparation, placed of the restoration, and stored in the aquadest then methylen blue 1% in sequence at 37oC until 24 h. The microleakage means value is decided by scoring system depend on the penetration of methylen blue 1% at occlusal wall and gingival wall. The microleakage means value on GIC+BAG is smaller than GIC, but their differences were not significant.

Abstract

Fusobacterium nucleatum is a bacteria found in normal flora of the oral cavity that plays a role in the occurrence of periodontal disease. The prevalence of periodontal disease in Indonesia reaches 70%. One treatment by using medicinal plants is robusta coffee beans. Robusta coffee beans contain volatile acids, chlorogenic acids, caffeine acids, phenols and caffeine suspected to be antibacterial. The objective of this study was to determine the inhibition of coffee robusta extract on growth of Fusobacterium nucleatum. This study used disc diffusion method with 4 samples in each study group. The study group consisted of 6 treatment groups (12,5%, 25%, 50% and 100% coffee robusta extract), positive control group (chlorhexidine gluconate 0,2%), and negative control group (sterile aquades). Data were analyzed using One Way Anova test and LSD (Least Significant Difference) test. Coffee robusta extract has the ability to inhibit the growth of Fusobacterium nucleatum. The concentration of coffe robusta extract 100%, 50%, 25%, 12,5% have same ability to inhibit the growth of Fusobacterium nucleatum.

Abstract

Hematoma is a large collection of extravasation of blood due to trauma, causing a palpable mass. The cause of hematoma is usually due to trauma or due to a systemic bleeding disorder. The differential diagnosis of this lesion is ecchymosis and hemangioma. A strong examination and history are needed to determine the diagnosis. Hematomas usually do not require treatment because of self-limiting. A 19-year-old woman came for control after 1 week of cleaning tartar/scaling. There was a swelling that the patient does not realize is under the dark red tongue with a size of ± 2mm. The patient had no history of systemic disease. OHI-S is good and other objective examinations are within normal limits. Therapy was given in the form of dental health education and evaluation of lesions for ± 1 week. Hematomas were generally caused by trauma resulting in extravasation of blood to the tissues that affect the underlying blood vessels. Hematoma could disappear spontaneously so there is no need for treatment.

Abstract

Chronic periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that occurs in periodontal tissue. The causes of chronic periodontitis can be local and systemic factors. Local factors that can cause chronic periodontitis are plaque accumulation, while systemic factors can be in the form of systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. The purpose was to explain the condition of chronic periodontitis that occurs in patients with diabetes mellitus. A 52-year-old woman complained that her teeth have been rocking for about a year. The patient is known to have a history of diabetes mellitus and is undergoing routine treatment. Clinical examination of the oral cavity shows gingival recession in the anterior and posterior teeth area of both the maxilla and mandible, accompanied by the shakiness of the teeth. Patients with diabetes mellitus have decreased immune response and cell function. This condition can inhibit the process of tissue repair and bacterial destruction, to increase the severity of periodontal conditions. the condition of periodontitis can also affect the severity of diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Periodontitis and diabetes mellitus have a mutually influential relationship.

Abstract

Caries is the most problem in oral health. The main etiology of the disease dominated by bacterial colonization, can be found in saliva. Bacteria control were performed by using antibacterial agent. Purple leaves extract (Graphtophyllum pictum L.Griff) contains of antibacterial agent namely flavonoid, triterpenoid, alkaloid, glycoside, saponin and tannin. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of gargling with 10% purple leaves extract on bacteria’s count in saliva. In this study 15 subjects were divided randomly into 3 groups (treatment, positive and negative control). Each of groups consist of 5 persons. Treatment group gargled with 10% purple leaves extract, while positive control group gargled with 0,2% Chlorhexidine gluconate and negative control group gargled with aquadest for 1 minute consecutively. Before and after treatment saliva samples were collected in sterile container, incubated, cultivated on Brain-Heart Infusion Agar (BHIA) for 2 x 24 hours and counted bacteria’s colony in saliva by using colony counter. Analyzing data with Anova and LSD test. The results showed that 10% purple leaves extract decreased bacteria’s count in saliva (p<0,05). There was no significant difference between the number of bacteria’s colony in samples who gargled with 10% purple leaves extract and 0,2% Chlorhexidine gluconate(p>0.05). In conclusion, gargling with 10% purple leaves extract may decrease bacteria’s count in saliva and hassimilar potency as 0,2% Chlorhexidine gluconate
