Abstract

Chronic periodontitis is an inflammatory disease that occurs in periodontal tissue. The causes of chronic periodontitis can be local and systemic factors. Local factors that can cause chronic periodontitis are plaque accumulation, while systemic factors can be in the form of systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. The purpose was to explain the condition of chronic periodontitis that occurs in patients with diabetes mellitus. A 52-year-old woman complained that her teeth have been rocking for about a year. The patient is known to have a history of diabetes mellitus and is undergoing routine treatment. Clinical examination of the oral cavity shows gingival recession in the anterior and posterior teeth area of both the maxilla and mandible, accompanied by the shakiness of the teeth. Patients with diabetes mellitus have decreased immune response and cell function. This condition can inhibit the process of tissue repair and bacterial destruction, to increase the severity of periodontal conditions. the condition of periodontitis can also affect the severity of diabetes mellitus. Conclusion: Periodontitis and diabetes mellitus have a mutually influential relationship.

Abstract

Oral Candidiasis is infectious that caused by fungi Candida albican. Candida infection can happen on Diabetes mellitus patients (DM) because of glucose high level on oral cavity fluid and decreasing immunity patient. The purpose was to discuss and management acute erythematous candidiasis on DM patient. A 63-year-old male patient arrives at the Dental Hospital with dorsal pain, heat and pain when eating and drinking. Pain has been felt since about 2 months ago after the patient experienced heart disease. The patient has a history of controlled diabetes mellitus, controlled hypertension, asthma and gastritis. The patient feels pain in his tongue getting worse accompanied by a burning sensation and pain when the body was unhealthy. The patient was diagnosed with acute erythematous candidiasis and treated with systemic antifungal, mouthwash and topical antiseptic for oral cavity cases and was referred to an internal medicine specialist for blood sugar control. The patient was declared cured after 36 days of treatment. Knowing the predisposing factors in this case (DM) is very important in the management of erythematous acute candidiasis therapy. Patients with diabetes mellitus must routinely control blood glucose levels, maintain oral hygiene and not worsen by adding other predisposing factors.

Abstract

The habit of chewing betel nut is one of the predisposing factors that can trigger the formation of various oral lesions and develop into a malignant condition in the form of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). This malignancy has a low five-year survival rate as early detection is not widely carried out. Early detection can be conducted by examining pyknotic cells to describe the level of apoptosis. This study aims to examine the pyknotic cell features as a marker of apoptosis in various oral lesions found in betel nut chewers. This study is an analytic survey conducted once with a post-test control group design. The study was conducted on 17 betel nut chewers and 17 healthy people as controls. A buccal mucous smear was collected, and cytological slides were made with Papanicolaou stain. Pyknotic cells were counted using a light microscope and Optilab pro camera. This study found several oral lesions in betel nut chewers, namely exogenous pigmentation, lesions resembling leukoplakia, and lichenoid reaction. Furthermore, the result also showed that the frequency of pyknotic cells in betel nut chewers was lower than in the control group. Non-parametric Kruskal Wallis and post hoc Mann Whitney test showed significant differences in the number of pyknotic cells in various oral lesions with a p-value = 0,001. It can be concluded that the consumption of betel nut affected the level of apoptosis, characterized by a decrease in pyknotic cells and significantly different pyknotic cells depending on the type of oral lesions.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Secondary caries occur due to imperfect plaque control. Prolong the protective and therapeutic effects can be done with restorative materials that release fluoride. Now composite resins have been developed a new restorative hybrid material with new matrix component, namely giomer. Giomer composition containing surface pre reacted glass ionomer (S-PRG) as a major source of fluoride production. Increasing the mechanical strength and minimize microleakage to prevent secondary caries can be done with preheating treatment. Purpose: This study is conducted to determine the effect of preheating temperature on the release of giomer’s fluoride. Methods: This study used 9 cylindrical samples in 10 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness each group, divided into 3 groups and 3 subgroups. Group 1: preheating at 37°C for 30 minutes. Group 2: preheating at 60°C for 30 minutes. Group 3: as a control group (without preheating treatment). Each group divided into 3 subgroups immersion, on day 1, day 7 and day 14 with artificial saliva. Fluoride release test was conducted by Spectrophotometer. IBM's SPSS Statistics used for the Data analysis. Results: The addition of preheating treatment decrease the amount of fluoride release. One-way ANOVA test showed a significant difference (P < 0.05). A significant difference between groups and sub groups showed in LSD test (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The group without preheating treatment has highest fluoride release and the 60°C preheating treatment group was the lowest. Addition of preheating treatment may increase the mechanical strength and minimize microleakage, but also descrease the amount of fluoride release.
