Abstract

ABSTRACT Dental caries in early-aged children still occurs frequently. One of its causes is the less dental hygiene, children are still incapable to maintain their oral and dental health independently. One of material to help in cleaning teeth is toothpaste. The choice of this material should be appropriate in order to obtain optimum dental hygiene and not result in negative impacts. The products available in the market generally claim themselves as the best one by showing their excellences e.g. brand, interesting package, low price, and quality. Those necessitate the customer especially parents to be selective in choosing appropriate toothpaste for their children. The choose of toothpaste should consider some aspects including the composition, development of child age, criteria required based on the age, product variant, and side effect. In conclusion, the criteria of the chosen toothpaste: should be base on safe package and interesting, colours, scent and taste liked by children.

Abstract

Exposure duration of light activated composite resin is one of the factors which influenced polimerization level. Polimerization level correlated with the evidence of microleakage . the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Exposure Duration Of Light Activated Towards Microleakage Of Restoration Flowable Composit Resin. The samples were made o0f light activated flow able composite resin (Tetric Flow) and the exposure duration was 20 seconds , 40 seconds, 60 seconds. Each group contained of 8 samples of flowable composite resin filling of middle third buccal surface premolar teeth , immersed in methylene blue solution, cut across linguo-buccal and subsequently observed on its edge microleakage using binoculer microscope indicated with the depth of methylene blue penetration. The result showed that edge microleakage from the lowest up to the highest were 40 seconds,60 seconds, 20 seconds. Mann Whitney U statistical analysis only showed significant differences among the 20 seconds group towards 40 seconds group.

Abstract

Local anesthetics are believed to be the most frequently used drugs in clinical dentistry. Lidocaine and mepivacaine are commonly used in RSGM (Oral and Dental Hospital Jember University), although they are generally regarded as safe, some adverse reactions can be expected and do occur. This study was undertaken to know the effect of vital sign on mepivacaine in local anaesthetic on dental clinical use. Material and Methods: A total of 42 (14 males, and 28 females) healthy students of Faculty of Dentistry Jember University were included in this clinical trial. They were locally injected as block anaesthesia of inferior alveolaris nerve. Blood pressure, pulse, and respiration were examined pre and post injection. Result: Mean of respiration pre/post (18.7/1.8) p>0.05, pulse pre/post (79.8/79.9) p>0.05, and diastole pre/post (74.9/73.9) p>0.05, and systole pre/post (112.0/110.2) p>0.05. There were no clinical and statistical differences on vital sign between pre and post injection. Conclusions: Mepivacaine as local anaesthetic is clinically safe on vital sign.

Abstract

The masticatory system is part of stomatognatic systems that is a functional unit composed of the teeth, the temporomandibular joints, the muscles involved directly or directly in mastication (including the muscles of the lips and tongue) and the nervous systems supplying these tissues. Mastication is the action of breaking down of food, preparatory to deglutition. This breakingdown action is highly organized complex of neuromuscular and digestive activities. Functional and structural disturbance in any one of the components of the masticatory system may be reflected by functional or structural disorders in one or more of its other components. Therefore, it is important that dentists know how mastication normally occurs. This knowledge should ensure that dental procedures improve, rather than reduce, patients functional abilities.

Abstract

Bacteria in oral cavity are associated with oral health, as well as with dental caries. Cariogenic streptococci depend on a biofilm lifestyle for survival and persistence in the oral cavity. Primary factors allowed tooth caries is Streptococcus mutans colonization on tooth biofilms. Biofilm formation depend on carbohidrat diet n some enzyme that produced by Streptococcus mutans. It will enhance oral environment to be acid and causes tooth demineralization.

Abstract

Dental caries continues to be the most common infectious disease in childhood. Improvement of oralhigiene is the strategy for preventing dental caries. This can be achieved by means of dental health education(DHE). This descriptive study purposed to evaluate the role of DHE on oral higiene status was measured by means ofGreen Vermillion Oral Higiene Index (OHI). The study was conducted during November 2010 –Januari 2011. OHIevaluation was performed at three time visit for every week interval. DHE was performed personslly, once, at the firstvisit, after evaluating OHI. The results showed that there were tendency of declining mean OHI after DHE treatment, both in boys and girls groups. In girls groups, at the first visit mean OHI =1,38. second visit OHI= 0,65 and third visit OHI =0,45, while for boys group, first visit mean OHI = 1,28, second visit OHI = 0,42 and third visit OHI = 0,35. It can beconcluded that personal DHE method improved oral higiene status, there for it was recomended that intensive DHEshould be performed as a routine clinical prosedure

Abstract

Gene therapy is a method to repair damaged or defective genes that responsible for the onset of certain diseases. Now, numerous prototypes of DNA can control the progress of the disease through induction or inhibition of genes, but the bad cellular uptake and the rapid in vivo degradation of DNA-based therapy require the use of delivery system that can facilitate the cellular internalization and keep its activity. Cationic polymers are commonly used as gene carrier because it is easy to form complexes and it has higher stability compared with lipoplexes. Cationic polymer chitosan is the most widely used in gene delivery system because of the low toxicity andbiocompatible. Gene delivery system using viruses shows high transfection result but it has many disadvantages, such as oncogenic effects and immunogenicity. However, cationic polymers, such as chitosan have the potential for complexation of DNA that can be used as a non-viral vector for gene therapy. Chitosan provides a strongelectrostatic interaction with negative charge of DNA to form nanoparticles and effectively protect from nuclease degradation. Those properties make chitosan become a good candidate from non viral gene delivery.

Abstract

Disease caused by bacteria still have a high prevalence in Indonesia, both in urban and rural areas. Currently the treatment of diseases caused by bacteria carried by many antibiotics, whereas in reality antibacterial drugs like antibiotics are now causing a lot of resistance in some people. Because of this we effort to develop antimicrobial agents, a series of chalcones were 1-(4-Bromo-phenyl) -3-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-2-propen-1-on and 1-(4- Bromo-phenyl)-3-(3,4-dimethoxy-phenyl)-2-propen-1-on compounds. These compounds are synthesized on the basis of QSAR (Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships) using lipophilic, steric, and electronic parameters. Compound 1-(4-Bromo-fenill)-3-(4-methoxy-phenyl)-2-propen-1-on and 1-(4-Bromo-phenyl)-3-(3,4-dimethoxy-phenyl)-2-propen-1-on is made from raw materials 4-bromo-asetophenone and 4-Methoxy benzaldehide/3,4-dimethoxy benzaldehide usual Claisen-Schmidt condensation method of mixing for overnight 24 hours then be recrystallized to obtain a pure crystalline chalcones analog compounds. After the synthesis, compounds were characterized by organoleptic and melting point test. The results showed that a white color, smells aromatic, and needle crystals. The synthesized compounds were characterized by means of their 1H-NMR spectral data. All the compounds were tested for their antibacterial activities by the hole plate method.
