Abstract

In primary open angle glaucoma, decrease of hyaluronic acid level is related to extracellular matrix deposition of trabecular meshwork. Extracellular matrix deposition will increase humor aqueous outflow resistance which in turn increase the intraocular pressure. MMP-9 as one of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family, has a high potency to degrade the extracellular matrix. The expression of MMP-9 can be activated by hyaluronic acid through its binding with CD44 as hyaluronic main receptor. The aim of this research is  to determine the effect of hyaluronic acid on MMP-9 expression in trabecular meshwork cell culture of patient with primary open angle glaucoma by immunocytochemical method. Trabecular meshwork cell culture were exposed to hyaluronic acid at four different concentration (0mg/ml, 1 mg/mL, 3 mg/mL, 6 mg/mL). After 24 hours incubated, we find a significant difference of MMP-9 expression between control group and group with hyaluronic acid. There was significant correlation between hyaluronic acid and MMP-9 expression. Hyaluronic acid exposure will increase MMP-9 expression in trabecular meshwork cell culture. This finding suggest that hyaluronic acid can influence the resistance of humor aqueous outflow in trabecular meshwork by up-regulating MMP-9 expression, and therefore will increase extracellular matrix degradation.Key words : hyaluronic acid, primary open angle glaucoma, MMP-9

Abstract

The prevalence of obesity in children has steadily increased, not only in the world but also in Indonesia. Urban area as a central of economic led the higher prevalence of childhood obesity than in rural areas. The objective of this study was to analyze the risk factors associated with obesity among urban elementary school childrens in Jember. A cross sectional study was conducted with a total sample of 176 pupils. Anthropometric status determined using body mass index for age and obesity stated if z-score exceed >+2SD based on WHO 2007. The questionnaire about risk factors was filled with interview. Analysis data performed with univariate, bivarate, and multivariate analysis. This study showed the prevalence of obesity was 17%. Overall, our result showed that in non modifiable risk factors, the prevalence of obesity was significantly higher in children who had obese parent when compared to children who hadn't. Children who had obese parent had the more risk of obesity by 6 times. In modifiable risk factors, children who had meal more than 3 times per day had the more risk of obesity by 2 times. Drinking milk frequently according to Dietary Guideline for American 2015 has a protective factors against obesity.Keywords: childhood obesity, urban, risk factor

Abstract

The increasing population of elderly causes getting more complex illness because impairment in  organ function, one of them is the blood vessels. Blood vessels will have decreased nitrite oxide that causes atherosclerosis, as the primary cause of the hypertension. The change of lifestyle and nutrient factor is related to the incident of hypertension. Meanwhile, Indonesians tend to prefer food sources of carbohydrate. The purpose of this research is to analyze relations between consumption of carbohydrate with blood pressure on elderly from active members of Karang Wreda Sriwijaya and Semeru Jaya Sumbersari Jember about 47 samples. This research is an analytic observational research with the cross sectional methods. In this research, samples were interviewed to describe the charracteristic ( the age, sex, the history of hypertension). Then samples were interviewed to know their carbohydrate consumption using 24-hours Food Recall method three times in different time with the maximum of two weeks and the blood pressure was checked with a mercurial sphygmomanometer. The results of this research based on the correlation of Spearman obtained a value of p=0,00 for the number of subject’s carbohydrates consumption with systolic blood pressure and p=0,02 for diastolic pressure. The conclusion is there is a correlation between carbohydrates consumption with systolic and diastolic blood pressure.Keywords: carbohydrates consumption, blood pressure, elderly

Abstract

Depression is a prolonged sadness and a feeling or abnormal. Can be used to demonstrate a variety of phenomena, such as signs, symptoms, syndrome, emotional, reaction. Depression is more common in older people than depression in the general population with a prevalence rate of 25-50%. Elderly according to article 1, paragraph (2), (3), (4) of Law No. 13 of 1998 on the health of the elderly is said that a person who has reached the age of 60 years. The purpose of this study to determine the incidence and the general picture of depression that occurs at the level of the elderly who live in UPT Pelayanan Sosial Lanjut Usia Kabupaten Jember. This study is observational analytic cross sectional design. The variables observed in this study is the age and level of depression. Respondent has been investigated by using the GDS (Geriatric Depression Scale). Population in this study was all elderly that live in UPT Pelayanan Sosial Lanjut Usia Jember as much as 43 respondents. Spearman Rho analysis showed significance level 2.57 which shows 2.57> 0.05 p. This means that there is no significant relationship between age of elderly with depression levels among respondents in UPT Pelayanan Sosial Lanjut Usia Kabupaten Jember. Abstract

Cardiovascular disease causes the highest mortality rate in the world. Atherosclerotic plaque is the most common etiology of cardiovascular disease. High levels of cholesterol in circulation is the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis formation. Atherosclerosis risk can be lowered to 20-40% with statins. Statins are effective in lowering total and LDL cholesterol, but these drugs have been reported to cause side effects. Therefore, it needed an alternative medicine to prevent the process of atherosclerosis using kepuh leaves (Sterculia foetida). Flavonoids contained in Kepuh leaves improve lipid profiles. The aims of this study is to prove the effectiveness of Sterculia foetida in lowering cholesterol, triglyceride and reduce the amount of foam cells on high-fat-diet induced rats. The research design is quasi-experimental with post test only design. Animals are grouped into normal group, negative control group and three treatment groups that were given kepuh leaves extract  at the dose of 200 mg/kgBB, 400 mg/kgBB, and 800 mg/ kgBB. Rats were given high-fat diet of initial intravenous adrenaline injection 0.006 mg/200 gBB and duck egg yolks 5 g/kgBB for 21 days. Cholesterol and triglycerides were measured by enzymatic methods and aortic tissue stained with HE. ESf reduce cholesterol significantly and reduce the amount of foam cells on aorta.Keywords: cholesterol, triglyceride, kepuh leaves, foam cell, high-fat-diet

Abstract

Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) is still a public health problem especially in developing countries. CSOM with acquired cholesteatoma accompanied referred to as the type of hazard, as they often lead to dangerous complications and have a high rate of morbidity and mortality. Mastoid CT with 0,625mm slice thicness may reveal detail cholesteatoma and bone destruction. It’s an analytic observational study with cross sectional design. This study consisted of 30 cases CSOM, aged 18-60 years and had a 0,625mm slice thicness CT scan mastoid examinations in Dr. Kariadi Hospital Semarang and indicating a cholesteatoma and bone destructions. The result showed that hypopneumatization type and mild degree of bone destructions obtained in most subjects, each 20 and 21, but there’s no correlation between mastoid pneumatization and bone destruction (p 0,367 or p > 0,05). This study showed more lower type of the mastoid pneumatization, more severe degree of bone destructions.Keywords: CSOM, mastoid pneumatization, Mastoid CT

Abstract

Malaria is still a major problem in the international and national scale. World Health Organization (WHO) states that based on World malaria report, world cases of malaria reached 216 million and an estimated of 655 thousand people died, in 2010. Overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines by phagocytic cells and activated endothelial cells occurs In the severe malaria. Bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) has the potential to be developed as a new complementary therapy that is expected to prevent fatal malaria complications. The research objective is to test in vivo, the activity of a compound of standardized Bangle (Zingiber cassumunar Roxb.) fraction extract as a complementary therapy along with standard anti-malarial drug, artemisin. This is a true experimental study using twenty-five mice Balb / C male which are divided into five groups; the negative control group, positive control group treated KI, II, and III stimulation with each of the compounds of standardized fraction extract of bangle ( FEBT-h, FEBT-dcm, FEBT-m) for 14 days. Oneway ANOVA test showed the result of p = 0.01 (p <0.05). Continued with LSD test that showed the most significant in lowering the degree of parasitaemia is the group of methanol (FEBT-m).Keywords: Zingiber cassumunar Roxb, fractionated extracts, complementary therapies, malaria

Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) is a disease caused by Dengue virus. The disease is spread rapidly in the territory of Indonesia by Aedes aegypti mosquito as the vector. Using Moringa Aloifera leaf extract as a natural larvacide is an attempt to control the disease. This study aims to determine the effect of Moringa Aloifera leaf extract on the mortality of Aedes aegypti larvae. Moringa Aloifera leaf extract is obtained by maceration. The experimental design was divided into negative control groups containing aquades, positive controls containing abate and sample treatment groups. Phytochemical test and UV-Vis spectroscopic quantitative test to identify active compounds. A total of 20 Aedes aegypti larvae were put into a glass containing a solution of distilled water, abate solution and sample solution. Observations are made every 2 hours for 24 hours. The results showed that Moringa leaf extract solution could kill larvae at LC50 3953.17 ppm and LT50 18.98 hours. The mortality rates of larvae at each concentration were 1000 ppm, 5.25 units / 2 hours; 2000ppm, 5.28 units / 2 hours; 3000ppm, 5.91 units / 2 hours; 4000 ppm, 7.18 units / 2 hours, and 5000 ppm 8.63 units / 2 hours. The results showed that Moringa Aloifera leaf extract can kill Aedes aegypti larvae because they contain alkaloids, tannins and flavonoids.Keywords: larvacide, Moringa, Aedes aegypti larvae

Abstract

Coronary heart disease is an important health problem. It is estimated that the death rate from coronary heart disease by 23,4 millions in 20130 (WHO, 2009). Excessive physical activity can cause oxidative stress which lead to atherosclerosis. Mung bean sprouts (Vigna radiata (L)) contain vitamin E, vitamin C, fenol, flavonoid, fitosterol, and other minerals. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of mung beans sprout extract on on the thicknes of the tunica intima-media on physical stress-induced atherosclerosis of male wistar rat. This research is true experimental study using 20 male wistar rat were divided into five groups: negative control, positive control and treatment groups P1, P2, P3 (physical stress + bean sprout extract 50 mg/day, 100 mg/day, 200 mg/day for 10 days). Abstract

Many farmers still use chemical pesticides. Chemical pesticides inside the body will form free radicals that will bind to unsaturated fatty acids (cell membrane structures) that cause increased levels of malondialdehyde (MDA). Organic pesticides can be used as an alternative to control pests. Organic pesticides leave no residues to plants and the environment. This study aims to determine the difference of plasma malondialdehid (MDA) levels in farmers who use chemical pesticides in Dawuhan Village, Tenggarang Subdistrict, Bondowoso Regency and farmers who use organic pesticides in Lombok Kulon Village, Wonosari Sub-district, Bondowoso District. This was an observational analytic research with cross sectional research design conducted on 30 farmers who use chemical pesticides and 30 farmers who use organic pesticides. Blood sampling was taken from Mediana cubiti vein. Measurements of plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) were performed using the TBARS method. Based on the result of Unpaired T-test, it was found that p < 0.001 which showed significant difference in plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) level in farmers using chemical pesticides and farmers using organic pesticides. The plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) level average were higher in farmers using chemical pesticides. Keywords: Chemical Pesticide, Organic Pesticide, Plasma Malondialdehyde
