Presently, mathematic is commonly known as scholarly studies specialized on worldly matters, step aside from mysticism. However, such perspective does not prevail on Pythagorean traditional sect. Besides studying of mathematic, they also have tight tradition and mystical belief. This paper aims to analyze the religious side of Pythagorean sect which relates to mathematics. Many concept of mathematics in some universities recently come from Pythagoras thoughts. One of Pythagoras ideas used till now is Pythagoras’s theoretical framework of the comparative quadrate of trilateral sides, (a2+b2=c2). This mathematic concept is widely used, taught and taken as irrelevance with mystical matters, metaphysical and religiosity. The religious elements that have been analyzed refer to Durkheim’s concept of religion on belief in a sacred, namely totem, taboo and ritual. This study argues that Pythagorean conviction of mathematics, related to number, geometry and ratio are categorized as a kind of religious form. Pythagorean sect possessed belief to the sacred, totem, taboo and ritual which is connected with their conception on mathematics.

Abstract

This article discusses the current situation of religion caused by the forces of globalization by analyzing the developing phenomenon related to religion in contemporary society. It argues that globalization has a mixed impact on religion in ways that lead to the opposing view of secularist scholars that religion will be diminished. Apparently, religion has experienced a revival in many parts of the world, mainly in the form of religious fundamentalism. Problems and challenges posed by globalization, such as the environmental crisis and secular society have provided the opportunity and the power to religion to revitalize itself and to transform themselves into a religion with a new form that has a role and a new identity. Furthermore, globalization may lead to the decline of organized religion in modern society and certain intellectual subculture, but it does not cause the death of religion in private life. This is in line with the emergence of the phenomenon of “believing without belonging”. In short, globalization has helped to transform the religion itself and changed its strategy to address the problems and challenges of globalization to create “world de-secularization”. Hal ini seiring munculnya fenomena “believing without belonging”.

Abstract

The encounter between Christianity and Dayak culture since its inception has created a controversy. The main problem is the difficult to separate between religion and culture. The customs indeed have a close relationship with the religious structure of the Dayak people. Their live and mind follow the customs, traditions, and the provisions that have been inherited from their ancestors. Apparently, the Gereja Kalimantan Evangelis (GKE)/The Kalimantan Evangelical Church face this problem in dealing with the practice of marriage in the Ngaju Dayak culture. Some groups regard the cultural practice as a sin against the teachings of Christianity, while others consider that it is acceptable in the Christian faith. This article finds that contextual theology allows GKE accommodate Dayak customary practice in the context of the theology of Christianity. Wedding custom of Dayak people of Ngaju has rooted from their tradition but the meaning behind the process refers to the Christian values.

Abstract

Abstract

In order to protect Ahmadiyah in East Java, the executive body of East Java Province has issued a Degree No. 188/94/KPTS/013/2011 regarding the prohibition of the Ahmadi’s activity in east java. However, it becomes controversial. On one hand, it is considered protecting minority’s right, but on the other hand, it also weakens the position of Ahmadiyah toward majority’s group outside Ahmadiyah. One implication of the degree is the loss of the primer rights of the group in worshiping their belief in accordance with their faith. Combining Kymlicka’s external protection and internal restriction, this article attempts to analyze the implication from the government degree. The basic assumption of this article is that the country is incapable to protect the existence of minority group, Ahmadiyah. The finding shows that the Government of East Java cannot protect the principle rights of Ahmadiyah, especially the right to worship based on their religious belief. As a response to this restriction, Ahmadiyah has applied an internal restriction towards their members that protect themselves from the majority. However, this restriction does not have a penalty so it is considered protecting individual rights of Ahmadiyah group.

Abstract

This article is about history of ancient Israel in biblical era and how the sacred scripture introduces information of the ancient people. We have to know how to read the scriptures. They demand an imaginative effort, as Karen Armstrong said, that can sometimes be as perplexing and painful job. The true meaning of scriptures can never be wholly comprised in a literal reading of the text, since that text points beyond itself to reality that cannot be totally grasp. Our academic world cultivates us to look for the words between the lines. We expect a text to express its idea as clearly as possible. In a philosophical or historical work, we will often judge writers by the precision and consistency of their arguments. There are Jews and Christians who have come to apply the same standards to Bible. Some, for example, have argued that the chapters of Genesis and Chronicles are factual accounts on history of ancient Israel people. But what we need to the Bible does not present its truths to us in this way. This article presents two main methods to understand the historical contains of the biblical text: historical interpretation and biblical archaeology to know at some profound level the sacred history of biblical Israelites people
