Abstract

Sunnah, as the second source after Koran had been through several hard priod which stems from slander, emerge in the midst of Muslims since the death of caliph Othman b. ‘Affan. During that, the Sunnah of the Prophet become a tool for political infighting and it arose multi fanaticism, starting from the fanaticism of madhhab, race, class, and other fanaticism along with the break up of the Muslims into sects. This makes the Sunnah ainted. It was difficult to distinguish between an authentic hadith, da‘îf even mawdû‘. It is difficult to distinguish whether the transmitters are thiqah, free from fanaticism, or other tendency, which caused the narrators unable to maintain the integrity of Sunnah. Since the codification campaign echoed the hadith, the scholars began the unification and selection of traditions in various ways, all were concentrated on the activities of criticism as an effort to authenticate hadith, chains. So, the common question of tradition at the time was whether the isnâd valid, whether the matn certainly valid as well. This paradigm emerged different disciplines related to the study, such as science of isnâd, al-jarh wa al-ta‘dîl, al-tabaqât, al-‘ilal and so forth

Abstract

Text will always interacting with the context. He always dialectic with the conditions in which the text was born. Therefore, to understand a text, an understanding about the context becomes a necessity that must be done, not least the understanding of hadith texts. Without understanding a variety of variables and circumstances behind the text that includes historical aspects, sociological, psychological, and so on, then this will potentially misinterpretation. This article explores the ideas of Jamal al-Banna on the methodology of contemporary traditions. He offers concepts and methodologies so resolutive and intelligent in understanding the Sunnah of the Prophet. He also shows how Muslims should ideally interact with the Sunnah. Departing from the description, it will be explored in this article about Jamal al-Banna Sunnah thinking which will then be analyzed in this hermeneutic perspective. According to him, Muslims today should make the Sunnah as a model of ijtihad, which also means keeping the existence of Sunnah. That is, people now have to follow the path and methodology, not the spoken word; follow the Sunnah of the Prophet, do not follow the text of the hadith.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the influence of sanad ‘alî on the quality of hadis. Sanad is one of the most important elements in determining the authenticity of hadis. Therefore, the scholars were going (riḥlah) to Mecca, Madinah, Egypt, Baghdad, Sham, Ḥurasân and other regions to listen the hadis directly from the authoritative sources and to obtain higher level of the chain (al-isnâd al-‘âlî). Imâm Ibn Mâjah has collected five hadis thulâthî and these five hadis are narrated from the only one sanad that is Jubârah b. al-Mughallis from Kathîr b. Sulaym from Anas b. Mâlik. By applying historical approach to observe narrators’ background, this article, then, argues that the construction of al-isnâd al-‘âlî can avoid defects probability in the case of al-isnâd al-nâzil (sanad with several narrators). The al-isnâd al-‘âlî encourages the scholars of hadis to confirm hadis by leaving al-isnâd al-nâzil. However, there is no certainty of the authenticity of a hadis, because the defects which appears in al-isnâd al-nâzil, can also occur in al-isnâd al-‘âlî

Abstract

A doctrine that is associated to the Prophet for killing apostates was widely known by Muslim community, in spite of one of the main principles of the Islamic doctrines teached the freedom of religion. The following article discusses some Hadiths on killing apostates and relates them with the early Islamic historical narration. Besides, this article describes the classical and contemporary ulamas in their multiple understanding of Hadiths on killing apostates. Finally, I argue that the reasons of fighting against persons who are suspected as apostasy in the early Islamic period are more political in nature. Essentially, Islam allows people to convert to and from Islam, in the absence of criminal punishment under a sentence of death.

Abstract

This present paper is heavily influenced by this notion of inter-connectivity, trying specifically to demonstrate the correlation between the Prophet traditions on medication and modern health sciences. The Prophet medication project aims not at discovering utterly new ideas, but it reinforces any truth and denies false claims accredited to the Prophet. This paper, thus, focuses on both examining the medication practiced by the Prophet and exercising the accuracy of its sources. The basic argument developed in this paper is that transcendental objectivity within the Prophet traditions and empirical rationality within medical sciences must correlate. Through this examination, this paper concludes that the medication practiced by the Prophet as described in his traditions can be used as complementary to the modern medical treatment. Moreover, as long as it is carried out by using objective and accurate scientific methods, the Prophet medication can be used as an alternative to heal some diseases which modern medication has not found their cures. Keywords: Prophet traditions, prophet medication, scientific methods.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss the heretic (bid‘ah) issues related to ḥadîth naration. It actually has been a topic of discussion among muslim scholars (ulama). Some of them refuse the reliability of those ḥadîth narrated by the heretics, but some others maintain to receive their narration. This topic has become a polemical disputatation for the heretics are usually labelled negatively as “ahl al-ahwâ’ wa al-bida‘”, which in turns, brings them into a low level of personal degree. Interestingly, some of the heretics narrators are quoted and narrated by the major ḥadîth scholars like al-Bukhârî and Muslim. This article argues that ḥadîth scholars have revealed a neutral and objective position in appraising the narration of ḥadîth from those accused as heretics.

Abstract

Maḥmûd Abû Rayyah comes to the study of ḥadîth as a controversial scholar. His criticism has made a significant change in modern period in which his critics are directed towards some literatures and early ḥadîth scholars (râwî). One of the making polemic in his study is his critical study on the authenticity of ḥadîth in Bukhârî’s book, Ṣahîḥ Bukhârî. It is not only Bukhârî whom his critics are pointed out, but also Abû Hurayrah, a person who has narrated so many ḥadîth and become the most cited name in ḥadîth literatures. This paper would shed light on the epistemological view of Abû Rayyah in ḥadîth criticism. It highlights three branches of ḥadîth studies: authenticity, reliability and historical analysis. This study suggests that Abû Rayyah put al-sunnah al-hudâ (a living tradition of Muḥammad which is related to ‘aqîdah and sharî‘ah) as a main tool for validity to determine the authenticity of ḥadîth. In this case, every ḥadîth which contradicts to this value should be rejected. Further he said that ḥadîth codification did not take place in the period prior to al-Zuhrî. The political pressure is one of the reasons why al-Zuhrî and other Muslims are militant to write and collect Muḥammad traditions of ḥadîth.

Abstract

This paper aims to give a preliminary draft to formulate an innovative concept in the Qur’anic studies world in the age of post-consumerism Muslim. Recent studies on tug of war between globalization and religion have been identifying salient social transformation in some parts of Muslim world, such as the rise of new (media) religious authority, religious commodification trends, varieties of Islamic consumption, the emergence of public Islam and so forth. Apart from these recent scholarships, which successfully grasp the globalization’s influence toward religion (Islam), this paper offers the concept of everyday Qur’an as an alternative basic approach of understanding the cultures of Qur’an in this changing (Muslim) world and at the same time, seeking to briefly explain its emerging issues. Some exemplary issues then have analytically discussed to reflect how the proposed theory applied. Thus, everyday Qur’an can contribute the discourse of cultures based technology in the context of Qur’anic Studies.

Abstract

Waḥdat al-wujûd is a doctrine that believes in the ultimate form of God. While the universe is believed as a shadow that totally depends on the Creator (Ḥaqq Ta‘âlâ). Waḥdat al-wujûd is one of the most inciting topics debated by Muslim scholars in the middle time of Islam. The opponents of waḥdat al-wujûd has used to accuse it as heresy. They consider waḥdat al-wujûd as theologically rooted from Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Platonism and Neoplatonism. The opponents of waḥdat al-wujûd generally come from “literal-minded” theologians. They tend to understand the Qur’an and ḥadîth in its outward meaning. Whereas the inner meaning has abundantly been contained in the Qur’an. This paper is an effort to analyze some verses of the Qur’an by using ta’wîl (esoteric analysis) and to some extent is a reflection on Syamsuddin al-Sumatrani’s teaching. In the end, this paper argues that although literally term of waḥdat al-wujûd does not exist in the Qur’an, however, the analysis shows that the teaching of waḥdat al-wujûd is definitely rooted in the Quran.

Abstract

To investigate wriggles of Qur’anic studies at Germany in the end of 20th Century, one should examine works of its influential figure, such as Rudi Paret who was broadly considered as the most intelligent student of Enno Littman, a veteran German orientalist. This article describes and discusses the contribution of Paret’s works along with its methodological strength and fragility based on reviews written by their observers. The results of the passage will be used to map Paret thought, both about Islam and the Qur’an. It is concluded that: first, Paret’s research on the Qur’an contributes a lot to the development of the Qur’anic interpretation methodology; and second, Der Koran: Kommentar und Konkordanz is a work of interpretation based on the translation methodology, in which the text of the Qur’an is understood and explained by something parallel. This method resulted in a ‘concordance’, Paret’s concrete offer to stand against the chronological reading of the Qur’an that developed rapidly in his days.
