Abstract

Superhero is considered as an ideal figure with the image of hegemonic masculinity men. Hegemonic masculinity men are categorized as heterosexual, strong, intelligent, and dominant men. Meanwhile, homosexual men are subordinate masculinity. Perry Moore’s novel Hero presents the figure of a gay superhero. This study will explain how a gay superhero character named Thom was able to transcend the domination of hegemonic masculinity which has been synonymous with the image of a superhero. The method used is descriptive-analysis. The data taken is in the form of quotations in the novel Hero. The data that has been collected will be analyzed using the hegemonic masculinity theory popularized by R.W. Connell. The results of this study indicate that Thom is categorized as subordinate masculinity because of his sexual orientation as well as his weak, and insecure nature. As a gay superhero, Thom faces several conflicts in academics, family, and neighbourhood. However, he showed that he could change the perceptions of people. Through this novel, Perry Moore tried to dismantle superhero stereotypes.

Abstract

This conceptual article aims to explore literary works through the perspective of Fredric Jameson. Literary works have legitimacy as a critical space for real problems, however, many of them also expose the author’s ideological side or reality. This is the political unconsciousness. This research approach is grounded theory because this exploration moves from the empirical realm to the theory-based realm in analyzing data. The data are in the form of quotation statements taken from relevant reference books, articles or journals. The data collection technique is documentation because this research is a type of library research. The analysis technique is thematic analysis. From the exploration results, it can be seen that Jameson sees a text as a symbolic act, resistant but reproducible to the dominant ideology. This is the condition of reification, in which the subject (writer and/character) is drowning to a process of totalization towards unconsciousness which is inherent in ideological power. This is the political unconscious which leads us to the unmasking of cultural artifacts (literary texts) as interpreted social symbolic actions

Abstract

Brick Lane's is a post-colonial literary work that raises the issues of the Bangladeshi diaspora in England. The raise of diaspora writers who settled in Europe and America has colored modern world literature. The ideas of diaspora writers do not only present works with monolithic ideas, they have also presented various spatial constructions and identities about immigrants living in the Western world. This research was conducted as an effort to answer the formulation of the problem as follows: (1). What is the postcolonial spatial response in Brick Lane Monica Ali's novel? (2). How about urban space construction and postcolonial spatial strategy in the novel Brick Lane? This study uses qualitative research methods to explore how the author constructs postcolonial space and offers post-space in his work. Data was collected inductively through the depiction of characters in the novel and classified for later analysis using Spatial Politics Sara Upstone's theory. The results of this study indicate that the authors attempt to present chaos as a postcolonial spatial response. The chaos presented by the author appears when certain individuals in the novel feel discriminated against in a space with colonial-created boundaries and orders, either because of their identity or social class. The author also constructs city space by offering a strategy displacement in the form of transferring a sense of belonging to the smaller things that construct urban space, and the relationships between figures that make individuals feel comfortable with their existence.

Abstract

Di Bawah Langit Tak Berbintang (DBLTB) by Utuy Tatang Sontani is a travel literature because it narrates travel, fulfills the formal-aesthetic characteristics of travel literature, and reconstructs travel experiences in a novelistic way. This study explains aspects of travel literature and the author's ideology with Thompson's theory of travel literature. The first problem data are verbal units in DBLTB which tell about self-other, movement, room, meeting, agenda, and writing, which are collected using the note-taking technique. Data ideology is narratives from social, cultural, and ideological texts, which are collected by literature study. The data are analyzed by content analysis and Laclau and Mouffe’s discourse analysis. This study shows that Utuy involved himself as I, a traveler in Indonesia and China. The journey makes him arrives at spaces, such as Bandung, Jakarta, Peking, Canton, Cengkareng, sanatoriums, and Cing Tao, and brings him meets with others, both people, places, and activities. In its journey, the dominant world is described subjectively, which then shows the author's agenda, namely and defends his ideology, namely individualism.
