Abstract

SEAN has moved forward by establishing the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) in 28 January 1992. The main objective of AFTA is to promote ASEAN countries competitive advantages by eliminating tariff and non-tariff barrier under AFTA’s Common Effective Preferential Tariff (CEPT) scheme. Indonesia participation in AFTA is worth noting since CEPT covers significant amount of Indonesian exports and imports. This paper investigates Indonesia trade performances under AFTA employing intra-industry trade analysis. It uses three digit SITC derived from UN COMTRADE. The results show that during 1992–2010, Indonesia and ASEAN trade was highlighted by intra rather than inter-industry trade, particularly for manufacture commodity. Further inter-temporal analysis confirms this finding with increasing trend of intra-industry trade for non-manufactured commodity. Nonetheless, Indonesian sectoral performance was less competitive compare to other ASEAN countries. This study suggests that Indonesia may enhance the advantage of being AFTA’s member by, for example, creating a conducive investment environment.

Abstract

Ultra Low Frequency (ULF)  anomalies on geomagnetic variation data can be caused by external disturbances such as from the sun or space and internal disturbances from the earth. Before the 5.4 Richter Scale earthquake at Biak on September 29, 2004, there are anomalies that might be caused by electromagnetic emission from the earth's inner layer. These anomalies have been detected on geomagnetic signal in ULF band (10 — 600 sec periods). This paper will discuss the anomaly that was detected before the earthquake, and whether it was a local event within the earth's inner layer that happened because of the earthquake's preparation phase or was it actually caused by external disturbances. Data that is being used is the H and Z component of geomagnetic data variation. The Fast Fourier Transform method (FFT method) is being used to process the geomagnetic signal so the data can be filtered by bandpass filter. The Z/H polarization method is being used to analyze the result. Dst and Kp indices are also used to determine whether the anomaly is caused by external or internal disturbances.

Abstract

Soybean is the one of the most important food commodities after rice and maize. It is considered as significantprotein sources and is also used as raw material for several foods and feeds industries. The availabilityof soybean is mostly fulfilled from import, namely around 60% or 1.2 million ton/year. Therefore, the increaseof soybean productivity is an opportunity that should to be executed for minimizing the dependency of importedproduct. The development of soybean productivity for self supporting is very reasonable. The potencies, such as thetechnologies readiness (tolerant superior varieties and bio-fertilizer) and farming technology, are considered assuccess factors for supporting the increase of soybean productivities in sub-optimal lands. Meanwhile, the potencyof sub-optimal land for agriculture is still large quantity, namely 30.67 million hectares. The successful requiresthe supports of government policies and their commitments as well as the participation of farmer communities.

Abstract

Kebumen regency is designated as a village breeding centre for Ongole Grade cattle in Indonesia. Therefore, phenotypic characterization of 1,190 Ongole grade cows (1–6 years old) was conducted in Kebumen Regency. The study indicated that the average body measurement of Ongole Grade cows in Kebumen was higher and longer than the standard national body measurement set by National Standard Performance of Indonesia 7356:2008. Dominant qualitative characters of Ongole Grade cows in Kebumen was white coat colour, black muzzle, red or black vulva, straight trilateral head shape, with long horns, loose skin, and well-developed hump. Related to the potential of the Ongole Grade cow in Kebumen, efforts are needed in order to maintain the purity and the sustainability that is appropriate with agro-ecosystem and preferences of local farmers.

Abstract

This is a study of the “Hikayat Tamim ad-Dari” which used two theories and two methods: philology andBraginsky’s function. There were three variants of the manuscript that could be reached in the National Libraryof Indonesia. The researcher then selected the three manuscripts and decided the script under the code W. 101to be the primary source according to the criterion of material wideness. The selected manuscript was not onlytransliterated from Jawi into Latin but also edited to be the material for functional analysis. In the editing process, the text containing information of jin was then analyzed, categorized, and described in order to seek the wholeconcept of the jin. The conception revealed from the text were the life of the genie, their physical description, theirstrengthens and weaknesses, their religiosity, their interaction with humans and some creatures associated withthem.

Abstract

Determination of cesium-137 in seawater was done using the hexacyanoferrate resin as ion exchanger from 3 point samplings of surface seawater. The hexacyanoferrate ion exchanger matrix was prepared by performing the reaction ofsilica gel supported with potassium hexacyanoferrate and copper (II) chloride. In order to test the performance of the ion exchanger, a batch experiment was performed. A known activity of cesium-137 was used to spike seawater then the hexacyanoferrate resin was added. The separated hexacyanoferrate resin was then counted with gamma spectrometer The cesium-I 37 concentration used in the work varies between 0.5 Bq-20 Bq while the results of the adsorbing efficiency varies between 58-96%. In time variation between 0.5-20 minutes, the adsorbing efficiency varies between 77-96% with highest efficiency at contact time 60 minutes. The hexacyanoferrate ion exchange columns were used to process the Jepara's seawater The calculated cesium-137 activities were 1.37 Bq/m3-2.76 Bq/m3.

Abstract

Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary causes late blight (LB) disease which can decrease potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) production up to 100%. RB gene as source of resistance to LB could be obtained from genetically modified potato cultivars with resistance genes from wild species Solanum bulbocastanum. Evaluation virulences of P. infestans to potato contain RB gene is an important step to know effectiveness of controlling this disease. The research was focussed on determining virulence status of the isolates to the transgenic and hybrid potato plants containing RB genes. Isolates were collected from Bandung, Cianjur, and Garut, were cultured on V8-agar medium at 18 ± 20C. Virulence test were performed using “detached leaves assay” method. Based on statistic analysis, the average leaf infected by LB in potatoes containing the RB gene was significantly lower than potatoes in control group. Results showed that 40,8% transgenic leaves and 54,5% hybrid leaves which containing RB gene attacked by LB , whereas the control group was infected 98,7%. The virulence level of P. infestans isolates from West Java on potato plants contain RB gene is still low compare to that in the control group.

Abstract

Antioxidative activities of Eugenia polyantha Wight bark extracts grown in Indonesia were evaluated using 2,2-diphenyl–1-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging, β-carotene bleaching assay, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) assay. The extracts also showed protection towards lipid peroxidation on cooked (68%) and raw meat (56%). The methanol-water extract showed the highest level of free radical-scavenging activity ((ED50) = 0.18 mg/ml) and protection from β-carotene bleaching (85.7% at 100 μg/ml). The extracts showed the highest total phenolic content (856 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g and 161 mg catechin equivalent (CE)/g) and total antioxidative capacity (449 mg ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/g). A relationship between total antioxidative capacity and total phenolic content was recognized from E. polyantha bark extracts. Furthermore E. polyantha essential oil demonstrated inhibition growth activity of several agricultural pathogenic fungus i.e., Pleurotus ostreatus (46.2%), Fusarium oxysporum (38.1%), and Coreynespora cassicola (32.2%).
