Abstract

Central and regional governments must innovate in communication technology in the fourth industrial revolution. This study aims to identify and analyze the digital communication transformation in the government of Sukabumi City through the innovative use of communication technology. This study uses the Adaptive Structuring Theory (AST) theory, which studies the adaptation of new information technology within an organization. The methodology uses a qualitative approach with primary data collection through interviews with Diskominfo and the Sukabumi City Kelurahan. Meanwhile, the FGD was conducted with the community and sub-district staff of three sub-districts in Sukabumi City, namely Cisarua, Subang Jaya, and Cikole sub-districts. The results of this study accelerated the digital communication transformation in Sukabumi City’s electronic-based government system services (SPBE). Adaptation of technology in integrated organizations impacts government systems, civil servants, business actors, and the community. Sukabumi City’s government is transforming communication in public services, complaint applications, and population administration applications to become government and community media in communicating. Meanwhile, business actors are facilitated by the city government in implementing licensing and digital marketing communications presented through government social media, which helps increase consumer engagement.

Abstract

Immersive journalism presents information of an event from a first-person perspective to the audience through 360-degree videos that can be watched on smartphones. However, an immersive experience does not guarantee that Gen Z audiences will understand the information conveyed, due to the attraction of short attention spans. Audiences need skills to be able to navigate the media they watch to get the information they consume. Literacy studies on immersive 360-degree video, especially in Indonesia, are still rare. Even though digital media is increasingly immersive in presenting content, it is not known how far young audiences are able to analyze and critically assess the content accessed. This study aims to measure the media literacy level of the audience and its influence on the ability to process 360-degree video. A survey was conducted of 400 students in Jakarta in November 2022. The findings show that the processing capacity of 360-degree videos is significantly affected by a person’s level of media literacy. The better their media literacy ability, the easier it is for someone to process information from 360-degree videos.

Abstract

Three years since its first appearance at the end of 2019, until now, Covid-19 still exists. Realizing that the handling of Covid-19 cannot be carried out alone, the Indonesian government is trying to involve various parties to provide the public with an understanding of the risks. Considering that Covid-19 is still around, efforts to reflect on the risk communication system and the various risk policies adopted are necessary as a preventive action to anticipate various potential risks and health crises in the future. This research is qualitative with a case study type. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews with the Covid-19 handling committee in Indonesia (KPC PEN), observation, and literature study. The results of this study indicate that in building a risk communication system, the government cooperates with various parties. The communication system and risk policies implemented by the Indonesian government are not optimal in understanding risks to the public. Efforts are needed to conduct regular evaluations and monitoring to optimize communication systems and risk policies in anticipation of future health crises.

Abstract

The emergence of K-pop idol group Aespa has changed the landscape of K-pop fan culture since the group introduced the concept of a digital alter ego in the form of digital “ae” members. This research aims to understand how Indonesian fans construct the meanings of the digital alter ego concept carried by Aespa. This research is conducted by the reception analysis method. Informants consisted of four Aespa’s fans, each with distinct experience as K-pop fans. The main findings in this research revolve around the different reading positions held by informants, as affected by the distinct framework of knowledge, relations of consumption, and technical infrastructure surrounding their cultural practices as K-pop fans. Aespa’s digital alter ego could be seen in three ways: as another version of the self, a dishonest self-representation, and a polished version of the self. Through these differences, it can be concluded that fans’ construction of meanings cannot be reviewed through a deterministic approach but through a socio-cultural approach instead.

Abstract

This article investigates intercultural marriage from the perspective of communication between ethnic Bugis (migrants) and ethnic Kaili (natives) in Palu City, Central Sulawesi. This study seeks to analyze and investigate the cultural principle of sipakatau-sipakalebbi (mutual respect and humanization) among married Bugis and Kaili couples in Palu City. Through an examination of the patterns and practices of intercultural communication and family communication through the lens of Indonesian local culture, this research contributes to the Relational Dialectic Theory using a case study methodology. The empirical findings of this study indicate that the sipakatau culture (mutual humanization) and the sipakalebbi principle (mutual respect), which are the guiding principles and communication strategies of Bugis ethnics, are still adhered to in their interactions with others, even though many of them are married to individuals of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. This study also found that Bugis and Kaili inter-ethnic marriage partners understand the dynamics and communicate all the dynamics concerning these cultural differences, allowing for the resolution of problems and estrangement, including those that contribute to marital conflict. Due to a lack of comprehension of the sipakatau sipakalebbi principle on the part of Kaili couples, this principle has yet to satisfy Bugis couples in practice.

Abstract

The digital era has brought a massive impact on business development in Indonesia., However, the Covid-19 pandemic has crushed almost all small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and they are currently trying to stand and rise again in the post-pandemic. This study aims to identify the business development process in SMEs by using digital methods carried out by youth groups in pandemic situations from interactional communication perspectives. The concept used in this study is an interactional communication model with the element of individual meaning toward the social environment and individual field of experience. This research method is descriptive qualitative through focused group discussion (FGD). The result found that from the interactional communication process, the meaning interpreted by the group member toward their social environment was the identification of a number of problems faced by the SME owner. Other than that, there was also the meaning-making about building enterprises by utilizing digital media for marketing, especially in creating a platform for content management. Groupmembers’ different field of experience has brought opportunities to respond to eachother’s problem. There are also opportunities to create a new network and collaboration in searching for a solution to build a business with a digital marketing method.
