Abstract

This article examines Secangkir Kopi Pahit (Bitter Coffee, 1985), Teguh Karya’s tenth feature film, in which the film uses a non-linier investigative narrative structure to tell a complex story of an urban migrant coming to live in Jakarta. Unlike his previous films, in Secangkir Kopi, Teguh develops a new and unique filmic storytelling approach (using complex flashback structure in addition to filming location; central character a photographer and reporter obsessed with the city and exposing situations), which arguably produces a reality effect in depicting the growing third world megacity of Jakarta in the early 1980s. Secangkir Kopi Pahit combines and arranges various plots to portray the experience of people living in a late 20th century, third world megacity. The use of a complex narrative form from the beginning puts pressure on the viewer’s capacity to comprehend events in the film.

Abstract

UN (United Nation) notes that 75% of major conflicts in the world are caused by cultural diversity. As multicultural country, Indonesia has high potential for cultural conflict. One of the biggest conflicts that ever occurred in Indonesia is Maluku conflict. This conflict had been retold in the film “Cahaya dari Timur: Beta Maluku”. The research question is “How is the Maluku conflict narrated in the film Cahaya dari Timur: beta Maluku?”. To answer the question, the researcher chooses the narrative analysis from Tzvetan Todorov.  He argues that narrative is not flat. It consists of certain levels (equilibrium, disruption, recognizing the disruption, an attempt to the damage, and equilibrium). By dividing film narrative into five levels, this research finds the different condition in equilibrium level. Oftentimes, equilibrium is started by balance condition, but this film is started by conflict. Besides that, Maluku conflict is positioned as the background story.

Abstract

The development of groups of micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) has been very competitive. This condition can be found in Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY), one of them is MSMEs in Krebet tourist village. The major challenge is that there have already been several location points that manufacture similar products; therefore, the crafts need to be distinguished from one another. However, it has several challenges and dynamics to manifest the plan in Krebet tourist village. Brand positioning models are relevant to be applied in this case (Keller, 2013). This article is a finding explored in the framework of the community service program. In addition to providing assistance, the authors were able to explore the dynamics of the target group. Descriptive method is used to see the reality of the methodological aspects. Data collection techniques conducted through Focus Group Discussion so that information about the conditions in Krebet Tourism Village and the dynamics of its villagers can be identified. In addition, observations were made through regular mentoring in the business group in Krebet. In order to strengthen the findings, the authors distributed questionnaires to help map some of the data needed. Furthermore, interesting points that will be presented in the article include (1) understanding of citizens about the importance of brands in business activities; (2) understanding of collective brands; (3) dynamics in building collective brands as a way to develop the potential of the tourist village.

Abstract

Film production is a collaborative work process that involves many workers. Proper management is needed to achieve effective and efficient production results. Organizing is the second function of management work. The film production workers are divided into several departments, one of which is the camera department. In this department, all visual matters are accounted for. Director of Photography (DP) is the leader. Data collection in this research was carried out through archive studies, observations, and interviews. This article discusses how DP symbolically interacted in certain pattern with directors, producers, and crew in the camera department. The discussion uses the five concepts of Blumer's symbolic interaction, namely self-concept, the concept of action; object concept; the concept of social interaction; and the concept of joint action. The results of the discussion from this study indicate that the DP interacts with the director through productive self-appearances, has improved visual aesthetic achievements, and masters the latest equipment through works uploaded on social media. The action shown by the DP to the director as the boss is communicated using the concept language and his efforts to the camera department crew as subordinates are communicated using technical language. The DP interacts with the producer through a work contract; The DP interacts socially symbolically with the broader community through language selection that is adapted to the working environment. Finally, the DP interacts through collective action, working together with one department worker and between departments in a production process so that they can work together to produce a film.

Abstract

The Law on Pornography is perceived as not reflecting the nationality, the archipelago values, and legal certainty. However, the officials who formulated this policy were deemed to have failed in establishing a clear definition of pornography, which later contributed to the high ambiguity and legal uncertainty of the bill, now an Act. The analysis carried out in this writing focuses on the use of the principle of localism in the preparation of regulations of Law Number 44 of 2008 on Pornography. The approach method used in this qualitative research was the analytical description approach. The formulation of regulations in Indonesia must reflect the principles of protection, humanity, nationality, kinship, recollection as part of the archipelago, unity in diversity, justice, equality before law and government, order and legal certainty and/or balance, harmony, and conformity. The localism principle requires clear and mutually agreed interpretation, it would be useful in policymaking and policy analysis. Surely, the aim is to formulate a policy that contains clear and consistent evaluative and substantive standards. This research showed that the law on pornography, were born as a result of the localism principle not being used as a guideline at the beginning of its formulation.

Abstract

Community radio movement could be considered as media of resistance / counter hegemony. However, in fact, some community radios are far from expectations. Two community radio stations in Yogyakarta, which are Panaganti Radio in Terban and Angkringan Radio in Timbulhardjo, are not able to become media of resistance (Eddyono, 2011). Radio fails because government rules are too restrictive towards community radio. As a result, community radio cannot solve its own internal problems in order to survive for a long period. Moreover, this research could not get an answer about the role of Jaringan Radio Komunitas Indonesia (Indonesian Community Radio Network) in making a series of strategies to save the existence of community radio under its network, including Angkringan Radio and Panaganti Radio. This study used qualitative research and adopted Gramsci’s perspective on social movements and organic intellectual to understand the strategies which are used by JRKI to save the existence of community radio. As a result, JRKI strategies still have many weaknesses. JRKI is running out of energy in saving the existence of community radio.
