Abstract

This study aims to analyze how Indonesia’s national online media covers the issue of climate change. Media coverage of climate change is a fairly important issue in Indonesia to analyze how the media makes the issue of climate change a media agenda and, at the same time, monitor how the government’s commitment to the issue of climate change both in terms of policy, prevention, and handling. The method used is a descriptive quantitative content analysis method using a sentiment analysis approach. This study analyzed 3608 titles of news articles published in five Indonesian national online media, namely Antaranews, Detik.com, and Republika.co, Tempo.co, and Tribunnews.com during the five years 2019-2023. The study results show that the frequency of the coverage of climate change issues is most widely reported by Antaranews at 51% and is dominated by positive sentiments as a media company owned by the Indonesian government. In contrast to non-government-owned media, namely Detik.com, Republika, Tempo.co, and Tribunnews.com, the issue of climate change is also on the media agenda, although more than Antara news. This media agenda setting is close to the media framing of climate change issue policies, not merely the amount of coverage but climate change is highlighted on the focus of how weak the handling of the impacts of climate change is.

Abstract

Statistically, the production of people’s salt is still the most abundant national-scale salt production in Indonesia. Madura Island, the largest salt-producing island in Indonesia, also contributes the largest labor force in Indonesia. This shows that the potential for workers in Madura is still very significant. Therefore, this research aims to see the communication network of salt production workers in Madura. This study uses a descriptive quantitative method with a communication network analysis approach. The study shows that the mapping of social capital relations in people’s salt production can be seen from three relationships: bonding, bridging, and linking. In bonding relations, where the internal labor is still dominated by a few people, the hubs or links in the sociogram are seen to be centered on only one point. Meanwhile, the bridging relation is evenly distributed. This shows the opportunity for workers to strengthen their bias capacity with a demonstration plot mechanism and learn from others in need outside their community. Moreover, in the linking relationship, there is a wide gap in the community.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning of the ritual Nyadran Sonoageng in Nganjuk, East Java. The ritual which has been carried out since 1995 is a traditional communication model (silaturahmi) in the social structure in Nganjuk and a medium of community communication with their ancestors. By using the theoretical framework about ritual communication, the researcher revealed that throughout the process of administering the ritual, there was the involvement of local government to form the discourse of the Nyadran itself. Through a new ethnographic approach that focuses on discovering how people organize their culture in thought and action, the final results of this study indicate that the ritual of Nyadran Sonoageng which initially was a representation of gratitude to God experienced an expansion of meaning as a communication medium and tourism commodity that could generate additional income for residents around Nganjuk Regency. Based on the results of participant observation and in-depth interviews, the researchers obtained a portrait of the meaning of Nganjuk residents on the Nyadran Sonoageng ritual. Interestingly, the active role of the religious leaders, religious leaders/traditional leaders is an essential factor in maintaining the memory of the conception of gratitude to God and ancestors through a performance of the Nyadran Sonoageng ritual.

Abstract

Multiculturalism is one of the problems in modern society. Multiculturalism is not pragmatic political doctrine, but it is wisdom in managing cultural differences among people. Indonesia is an archipelago which consists of thousands of islands and hundreds of cultures. There are many crucial conflicts caused by cultural issues, such as ethnicity, religion, race, and other cross cultural issues. In this circumstance, people should be aware and accommodating to accept multicultural reality in a plural society. Television as modern mass media is not only expected to be informative and entertaining media, but also educational media. Through TV broadcast, television has a great social responsibility to explore multiculturalism campaign. TV itself has a variety of programs. Situation comedy is one of the comedy genres which are aired on the television which provides enjoyable entertainment. With humor, strong characters, settings and its smooth implicit message, situation comedy becomes a favorite entertainment program. Unfortunately, this show is not safe enough to be watched. Sometimes, it demonstrates extreme jokes. These jokes touch cultural issues and they make problems from cultural differences. In situation comedy, they taunt each other with extreme insults. The producer always creates unique selling points by creating a program that presents stereotypes. It is dangerous for multiculturalism education.
