Abstract

Odontogenic infection is the most common infection of the orofacial area. It can cause sepsis, activate host inflammatory response, and progress to organ failure and death. Patients presenting critical symptoms of sepsis need prompt diagnosis, monitoring, and risk stratification. Therefore, a biomarker specific to bacterial infection is essential for rapid diagnosis, immediate treatment, and saving lives. Procalcitonin is an elevated biomarker in response to bacterial infection; however, its use in oral and maxillofacial surgery is still limited. This review aimed to evaluate the role of procalcitonin as a biomarker in odontogenic infection. Procalcitonin was useful in managing odontogenic maxillofacial infections leading to sepsis, odontogenic deep neck infections, and abscesses. Procalcitonin can also direct antibiotic therapy initiation, escalation, and cessation, reflecting its usefulness in antibiotic stewardship. Future studies should elucidate the optimum cut-off value of procalcitonin in odontogenic infection management and its potential to be combined with other markers.

Abstract

Cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P) are the most common congenital abnormalities of the head and neck. The psychosocial issues (e.g., depression or major depressive disorder) of children with CL/P during the developmental period affect normal social interactions, which can increase the likelihood of low self-esteem and shyness. The study evaluated depressive symptoms and their association with demographic factors and cleft type among children with CL/P aged 7–12 years. A total of 128 children with and without CL/P were observed to have increased risk of depressive symptoms using the children’s depression inventory (CDI) questionnaire. The chi-square test was used for statistical analysis. A total of 128 responses from 128 participants were included. Thirteen participants from the CL/P group and nine from the non-CL/P group experienced depressive symptoms. The relationship between depressive symptoms in patients with CL/P was not influenced by sex (p = 0.48), age (p = 0.07), being an only child (p = 1), or cleft-type (p = 0.48). In conclusion, the prevalence of depressive symptoms in patients with CL/P was 20.3%. The association between depressive symptoms and CL/P was not influenced by sex, age, being an only child, or cleft-type.
