Abstract

Knowledge of the root canal system plays a significant role in avoiding the failure of root canal treatment. Premolar teeth may have several anatomical variations in their root canal system. A dentist must understand these root canal systems and their variation to conduct the appropriate treatment. The mandibular second premolar usually consists of a single root with a single root canal. The incidence of lower premolars with two or more root canals varied between 1.2% and 34%. This study aims to evaluate the success of root canal re-treatment of mandibular second premolars with type III Vertucci’s Classification. Case report: A 28-year-old woman visited our dental hospital with a pain sensation in her lower left premolar tooth. The subjective examination revealed that she had experienced pulp capping and root canal treatment last year. However, she felt pain and uncomfortable feeling on that treated tooth. A radiograph examination showed a radiopaque area from the crown edge to half of the root. The radiolucent area from the half tooth to the apical region showed root canal branching. The diagnosis for this tooth was previously treated teeth, asymptomatic apical periodontitis with type III of Vertucci’s Classification. Root Canal Treatment was done using crown down preparation technique and obturation with warm vertical condensation followed by class II composite resin composite as a temporary filling. Results showed that after three months of evaluation, the retreated-tooth condition kept showing good condition without any complaints, pain, or clinical abnormalities, suggesting it could function properly.

Abstract

The recommended tooth brushing duration is 2 minutes to obtain optimal fluoride levels in the mouth. Unfortunately, many people, especially teenagers and children, struggled to comply with the minimum duration. This study developed and tested the effectiveness of a toothbrush with a 2-minute timer prototype. This study determined the gaps and the mean scores of salivary pH, fluoride levels, plaque scores, and the number of Streptococcus mutants between the control group that used manual toothbrushes and the experimental group that used the prototype. A crossover and single-blind method was employed, involving 40 second-grade junior high school students selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data was collected by measuring the pH, fluoride levels, and the number of Streptococcus mutants bacteria in unstimulated saliva. The plaque score was also calculated using the Quigley-Hein modified Turesky plaque index (TMQHPI). The average fluoride level obtained by the experimental group was higher (8.86 ± 1.29) than the one of the control group (1.46 ± 0.44). The Independent T-test showed a significant difference in fluoride levels (p = 0.0001), while no significant difference in salivary was found in pH (p = 0.58) between both groups. The toothbrush with a 2-minute timer prototype developed in this study increased the fluoride levels, preventing dental caries and restoring salivary pH levels.

Abstract

Periodontal disease has a high prevalence in the world and Indonesia. There are 2 types of periodontal disease, such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which can be caused by pathogenic bacteria such as Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans. Minimizing periodontal disease can be done by brushing, flossing, scaling, and using mouthwash that contains antibacterial. Rosella (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is an herbal plant that contains antibacterial properties, so it can be used as an additional therapy to minimize periodontal disease. The research was conducted in the MiCore laboratory FKG Usakti with the method in this study using an in vitro laboratory experiment using a biofilm assay test with a concentration of 1 g/mL, 0.50 g/mL, 0.25 g/mL, 0.125 g/mL, 0.0625 g/mL, 0.0312 g/mL, 0.015 g/mL. The extract was distributed into well plates, stained with crystal violet, incubated for 1 hour, 6 hours, and 24 hours, and then counted using a microplate reader. The results showed that extract concentrations starting from 0.015 g/mL at an incubation period of 1 hour, concentrations starting from 0.125 g/mL at an incubation period of 6 hours, and concentrations starting from 0.0625 g/mL at an incubation period of 24 hours were proven to inhibit bacterial growth and proved to be more effective than 0.2% chlorhexidine with significantly different results (p<0.05). It can be concluded that Rosella extract can inhibit the growth of multispecies bacteria Fusobacterium nucleatum and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans.

Abstract

The prevalence of caries shows a percentage of 90% in toddlers in Indonesia. Caries has a negative impact on the body development of toddlers. Through the right parenting style, it is considered to be possible to reduce the caries rate in children under five. This study aims to determine the effect of parenting style on toddler dental caries in Baki District, Sukoharjo Regency. Accordingly, this analytical observational research applied a cross-sectional approach. Samples were taken using a purposive sampling technique involving 111 toddlers and their parents in Baki District. Toddler dental caries was measured using the dmft index, and parenting style was measured by a questionnaire adapted and modified from The Parenting Styles and Dimensions Questionnaire (PSDQ). Process data with IBM SPSS version 20. Results show that the parenting style of most parents involved in this study was authoritative (47,7%), followed by authoritarian (28,8%), and lastly permissive (23,4%). The highest dmft index is found in toddlers raised by permissive parents (7,92). The average education level of mothers in the three parenting styles was at the high school level (65%). The majority of parents' income in a month is in the moderate category. The conclusion showed that parenting style had no effect on toddler dental caries in Baki District, Sukoharjo Regency.

Abstract

Approximately 90% of individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS have encountered Oral Candidiasis during the progression of their disease, especially in patients with a reduced CD4+ 200 mm3. Oral Candidiasis is a prevalent opportunistic infection of the oral cavity. Reported a case of a patient with oral candidiasis in an HIV/AIDS with CD4+ below 50 and discussed the mechanism of molecular relationship decreasing count CD4+ with virulence of Candida Albicans. In this report, we present a case of a 35-year-old female who presented with oral candidiasis. The patient's CD4+ count test revealed a level below 50 and HIV test I-II-III reactive. Human immunodeficiency Virus causes a decrease in CD4+ count and leads to opportunistic oral candidiasis infection.

Abstract

The shape of deep and narrow pits and fissures can be a place of retention for both bacteria and debris and if this condition is left untreated, it can develop into caries. Effective efforts are needed to prevent caries, one of which is the application of pit and fissure sealants. Composite resin and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) are materials that are used as pit and fissure sealants. Consumption of drinks with an acidic pH, such as fermented milk, is one of the causes of microleakage because it degrades the sealant material. This study aims to know the differences in microleakage between pit and fissure sealant materials, composite resin, and RMGIC after immersion in fermented milk drinks. The sample of this research was divided into 2 groups, namely group A as composite resin and group B as RMGIC. Each group used a sample of 10 elements of the maxillary 1st premolar, then soaked in fermented milk drink for 6 hours at 37oC, followed by immersion in 2% methylene blue for 4 hours, then penetration of 2% methylene blue was checked using the Beta 4.0.3 of Scion Image program. The average microleakage of group A was 0.761 mm, and that of group B was 2.178 mm. There were differences in microleakage from the pit and fissure sealant material composite resin, and RMGIC composite resin had lower microleakage rates than RMGIC materials.

Abstract

Alginate is the most common impression material in dentistry. Alginate is a water-based material and thus has a lack of dimensional stability due to imbibition and syneresis. Dimensional changes in alginate can cause the impression to be less accurate. Dimensional changes can be resolved by modifying alginate, one of which is by adding cassava starch and modified cassava starch. This study aims to determine the effect of adding cassava starch and modified cassava starch on changes in the stability of alginate impression. This research was conducted in an experimental laboratory with a post-test-only control group design and 30 samples. The research was conducted by observing dimensional changes of pure alginate, alginate with 40% cassava starch, and alginate with 40% modified cassava starch at 0 minutes and 30 minutes of impression filling. The smallest dimensional change occurs in alginate with the addition of modified cassava starch 40%; as a result of 0.342% followed by alginate with the addition of natural cassava starch 40%; as a result of 0.592% and pure alginate with the largest dimensional change of as a result 0.85%. The One Way Anova test showed significant differences from the dimensional changes of pure alginate, alginate with 40% cassava starch, and alginate with 40% modified cassava starch. Alginate with the addition of 40% modified cassava starch is more stable than alginate with the addition of 40% cassava starch and pure alginate.

Abstract

Composite resin has three main components: a resin matrix, filler particles (filler), and a coupling agent. The inorganic nature of composite resin filler particles contrasts with the organic components prevalent in tooth structure and some adhesives. Therefore, to increase adhesive, innovative composite materials containing organic fillers are required. The aim is to describe the effect of curing time (20, 30, and 40 seconds) on the microscopic adhesion strength of composite resins containing (a) nano sisal, (b) silane-treated hydroxyapatite nano sisal, and (c) Z350XT nanofiller (control) to dentin. This descriptive study investigated the potential of nano sisal, a sisal fiber-based filler in composite resin, as an alternative to conventional synthetic fillers. Samples were divided into three groups: nano sisal composite (Group A), nano sisal composite with a coupling agent (Group B), and Z350XT nanofiller composite (Group C). Premolar teeth were filled with all three composite groups and cured for 20, 30, and 40 seconds. Standardized samples were then extracted for microscopic adhesion observation via a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). SEM images of groups A, B, and C showed a gap in the adhesion between the composite resin and the tooth structure. The smallest adhesion distance in group A was at a curing time of 20 seconds (0.687 μm). Group B had a large adhesion distance at 20 seconds (15.747 μm). The smallest microleakege in group C was at 40 seconds of curing time. It was 0.644 μm. Microscopic examination using SEM reveals the presence of microscopic defects at the interface between the restoration and the tooth structure across all investigated curing times (20, 30, and 40 seconds).
