Abstract

In this study, we aims to determine the factors that affect the consumers’ food consumption behaviour and further to examine the impact of consumers’ food consumption behaviour toward food waste in urban area. This study collected 400 questionnaires from the Klang Valley, Malaysia. The findings showed that there are three latent factors from the factor analysis which related to the negative food consumption behaviour, which were consumers’ negative attitude on food demand, perceived behavioural control on food waste, and subjective norm.  Multiple regression analysis showed that the negative food consumption attitude and perceived behavioural control on food waste have significant impact on the negative food consumption behaviour. Furthermore, the chi-square test showed that the percentage of food waste related to the difference level of negative consumption behaviour on food. Besides that, the Pearson Chi-square also showed that over demand for food and did not consume the food before expired date are highly significant associated with the number of food waste created by a household. In conclusion, consumers’ proper planning on food consumption, cooking, and food deliver order playing a significant role to reduce food waste in Malaysia.

Abstract

Indonesia is the largest cinnamon producing country in the international market. The presence of competing countries causes competition for completed cinnamon demand in the international market. International trade requires that each country has specialization and the ability to be able to compete for existing markets. This study analyzes the competitiveness of Indonesia's cinnamon exports and the competitors (China, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and Madagascar) by looking at comparative and competitive advantages along with factors that can influence them. The analysis period used in this study is from 2000 to 2017. Competitiveness analysis is measured by  using the Trade Specialization Index (TSI) and Export Competitive Index (XCI) analysis methods, while the analysis of factors that can affect competitiveness performance is analyzed using the panel data regression method. The results of this study indicated that Indonesia and the competitors have comparative advantages and tend to be cinnamon exporting countries in the International Market, besides that Indonesia and competitors (China, Vietnam, and Madagascar) have competitive advantages and cinnamon exports of these countries increase from the previous year, so that the country was able to compete for cinnamon exports on the International Market. Factors that can affect the performance of the export competitiveness of cinnamon in Indonesia and competitors are productivity, market share, export prices, and domestic consumption.

Abstract

Dietary contributes to sustainable food security. Accordingly, attempts to elevate dietary patterns should be simultaneous and comprehensive, especially to the farmer community living in rural areas, who have two roles, i.e., producers and consumers. In response to that situation, this research aims to analyze household dietary patterns and contributing factors. This research was conducted in Wukirsari Imogiri Bantul. The data used in this research were primary data collected from 63 respondents selected using the cluster sampling approach. Dietary patterns were analyzed using 2×24-hour dietary recall data with a household measure unit and a Desirable Dietary Pattern (DDP). Meanwhile, the contributing factors were analyzed using the Double Linear Regression Approach. Findings indicate that the Desirable Dietary Pattern in Wukirsari was monotonous, confirmed by the resulted DDP score of 60.62. Moreover, the significant factor with a partial impact on household dietary patterns was educational levels. Meanwhile, other factors, e.g., the number of family members, the age of the head of the family, income per capita, rice prices, beneficiaries, and the main job of the head of the family had a simultaneous significant impact, which was also partially insignificant, on dietary patterns.

Abstract

The average price of white pepper in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province from January 2007 to December 2016 was IDR 72,531 per kg on the producer market, IDR 80,622 per kg on the export market, and IDR 99,017 per kg on the world market. Based on the data, there is a large marketing margin between the producer market and the export market, IDR 8,091 per kg. While, the margin between the export market and the world market was IDR 18,395 per kg. The present research aims to analyze the transmission of white pepper prices in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province among the three markets. The Asymmetric Error Correction Model (AECM) was used as the model to analyze the transmission of white pepper prices in Bangka Belitung Island Province from producers to exporters, from producers to world market, and from exporters to world market. The transmission of white pepper prices from the three markets shows that in the short period it runs asymmetrically, whereas in the long period it runs symmetrically. Conversely, the transmission of white pepper prices from the world market to the exporters market runs symmetrically in the short term but it runs asymmetrically in the long term.

Abstract

The corporate farming approach on rice is aimed to increase the production on fields with the constraints of limited land area. The present research was aimed to analyze the impact of the implementation of corporate farming on the production, efficiency and inefficiency of the law land farming. The study was determined purposively in farmers’ group union “Tani Mandiri Dalangan” in Sukoharjo Regency, Central Java. Sampling of the respondents used a census method involving all members totaling 51 farmers over two growing seasons. Data were analyzed using the frontier stochastic production function Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) method frontier computing program 4.1c. The results showed that the corporate farming of rice production was affected by land area, Urea fertilizer and NPK fertilizer. Technical, economical and allocative efficiency corporate farming of rice farming has not been efficient. Technical efficiency shows the lowest efficiency value due to the use of factors of production exceeding the recommended regional dosage. Socio-economic factors that significantly affected the technical inefficiency of the low land rice farming are education, family size and extension.

Abstract

ABSTRACTDespite implementation of various land reform policies in South Africa post 1994 to address poverty and inequality, poor performance of the restituted farms and unimproved livelihoods of farm beneficiaries still exist. Hence, the objective of the study was to develop an intervention strategy to improve livelihoods of farm beneficiaries in South Africa and beyond. Qualitative and quantitative studies were used to collect data from key stakeholders and farm beneficiaries from 32 farms in Waterberg District. Focus group discussions, non-participatory observation, interviews and feedback sessions were used to collect qualitative data from 26 key informants. A questionnaire was also utilized to collect quantitative data from 289 farm beneficiaries. Thematic content analysis and Atlas ti version 8 were used to analyse qualitative data, while Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 was used for quantitative data. Ranking analysis was performed to determine factors contributing to non-performance of the farms. Majority of respondents (84.4%) agreed that farm production decreased and beneficiaries `livelihoods remained the same since restoration until 2015. Therefore, an intervention strategy was developed that included support production system, improved market access, incorporation of agricultural economics experts and engineers, to unleash agricultural potential in restituted farms to improve beneficiaries ‘livelihoods.
