Abstract

Penelitian mengenai model test TOEIC ini bertujuan untuk mendapatkan deskripsi dan penjelasan yang komprehensif mengenai sejumlah aspek yang terkait dengan butir butir soal yang ada. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk: (1) mendeskripsikan polapertanyaan pada butir soal Completion dan Error Recognition pada Reading TOEIC, (2) mendeskripsikan konteks bacaan pada soal pemahaman teks Reading TOEIC, (3) mendeskripsikan pola pertanyan pada butir soal pemahaman teks pada ReadingTOEIC, dan (4) memaparkan frekuensi masing masing tipe pertanyaan pada butir soal pemahaman teks pada Reading. Lingkup penelitian ini adalah model test TOEIC, khususnya structure dan reading comprehension yang diambil dari beberapa buku latihan test TOEIC. Data terdiri dari 500 butir soal yang yang diambil dari buku latihan TOEIC yang diterbitkan oleh Barron’s Educational Series, Prentice Hall, dan Longman. Teknik pengumpulan data berupa teknik dokumentasi. Data dianalisisdengan metode deskriptif interpretatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sebagai berikut: (1) komponen linguistik yang ditanyakan pada bagian Completion and Error recognition meliputi pertanyaan tentang penguasaan vocabulary (54.34%), Classof words (15%) (Verb, Noun, Adjective), Verb tense (11.33%), determiner (5.33%) preposition (4%), conjunction (3.67%), Degree of comparison in Adjective (3.33%), dan Conditional sentence (3%); (2) Konteks bacaan pada butir soal Reading Comprehension meliputi bisnis, manufacturing, finance and Budgeting, Offices,personnel, purchasing, housing/corporate property, travel, dining out, entertainment, dan Health; (3) pola pertanyaan Reading Comprehension meliputi: (a) gagasan utama dan kemungkinan judul yang tepat, (b) informasi yang tersurat dalam teks, (c)informasi yang tersirat, dan (d) dan tujuan penulisan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian di atas disimpulkan bahwa penguasaan kosakata sangat penting untuk keberhasilan dalam test TOEIC karena 50%-nya berupa penguasaan kosakata.

Abstract

This research aims at describing the types of language forms and functions found in Imagine That movie. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative. The objects of the research are utterances by adults addressed to children. Subjects of this research are the caretakers found in Imagine That movie, covering father and mother. The writer used the manuscript of conversation Imagine That film as data source. The data were collected through documentation technique with the following steps: watching the original film and reading the movie script, underlining the caretaker utterances then writing them down. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The results show there four types of word: noun, verb, adjective, and adverb and four types of phrase: noun phrase, verb phrase, adjective phrase, and adverbial phrase and four types of sentence: declarative sentence, interrogative sentences, exclamatory sentences, and imperative sentences. With regards to language function, there are seven kinds: instrumental function, interactional function, regulatory function, imaginative function, personal function, representational function, and heuristic function.

Abstract

The study aims at describing the learners’ error made by eighth grade students of SMP AL Islam Kartasura in their writing descriptive text; identifying the types of lexical error, syntactical errors, and discourse errors; explaining the frequency of each typeof errors; describing the dominant type of errors; and identifying the sources of error. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. In collecting the data, the writer uses elicitation and documentation technique. There are some steps ofcollecting the data; asking the students to write descriptive text, collecting the data in form of erroneous sentences and paragraph, identifying the composition, marking the types of error, and at last, listing the erroneous sentences and classifying them into the classification of errors. The collected data are analyzed using Dulay, Burt and Krashen classification of errors theory, frequency of each type of error using Slamet’s theory, and Brown’s theory for sources of error. The results of the research show that the eighth grade students of SMP AL Islam Kartasura make 291 errors in their composition which are classified into three categories of error based on the combination of linguistic category and surface strategy taxonomy. There are lexical errors that cover: misspelling 12,37% and literal translation (the use of Indonesian construction) 6,87%. Syntactical error consist of omission of {-s} as plural marker 4,12%, omission of {-s} as third singular person marker 10,31%, misselection of have instead of has 8,25%, the use of verb-ing in structure phrase 1,72%, omission of verb 2,40%, omission of be 1,5%, addition of be 2,40%, the use of prepositionin prepositional phrase 3,44%, omission of article 1,37%, addition of the article 1,72%, misordering in noun phrase 19,93%, misordering in phrase 1,37%, and the last is addition of unnecessary word 5,50%. Discourse errors is 2,06% that covercomponent of discourse in reference 2,06%. The writer also finds 2 dominant sources of errors, namely interlingual transfer and intralingual transfer.

Abstract

This study deals with referring expressions used in Indonesian newspapers: Kompas, Seputar Indonesia, Solopos, and Suara Merdeka. The aim of this research is to describe the kinds of referring expressions used in these newspapers. This is a qualitative research. The data were in the forms of referring expressions used in Kompas, Seputar Indonesia, Solopos, and Suara Merdeka. The data were analyzed qualitatively which includes description, classification, and explanation. The results indicate that there are several types of referring expressions used in these newspapers, namely: exophoric referring expressions and endophoric referring expressions. The endophoric referring expression consisted of anaphoric referring expression and cataphoric referring expressions.

Abstract

This study is carried out to describe classroom technique used in the teaching of English at State of Junior High School of Sawit 1 Boyolali. The kinds of this research is describtive qualitative research especially naturalistic study in analyzing the data. The method of collecting data in this research are observation, interview and document. The finding of the study shows that there are some classroom techniques implemented by English teachers at SMP Negeri 1 State of Junior High School of Sawit 1 Boyolali, drilling, grouping, individual task, listening to music, picture describing, presentation, question and answer, questioning, reading aloud, repetition, role play, and translation.The teachers have roles as facilitator, teacher as motivator, teacheras observer, teacher as manager, teacher as model, teacher as counselor, teacher as controller, and teacher as evaluator. The students have roles as members of group, as tutor of other learners, as negotiator, as subject, and as monitor and evaluator of their own learning progress. There are some materials used by English teachers, such as: textbook, workbook, dictionary, photocopy exercises, powerpoint on LCD, audio like song, and videos from youtube. The conclusion of this research is that English teachers at State of Junior High School of Sawit 1 Boyolali used various classroom techniques which can improve the students’ ability. Various techniques can make the students interested in English teaching-learning process. It does not make the class monotonous. The students become more active and creative. Based on the results, apparently, classroom techniques used by the teachers have important role in the teaching-learning process.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of self-management strategies to improve students’ learning discipline. The study was taken place at SMP X Pati. It was an experimental research used Solomon Three Group Designs: the experimental group, control group 1, and control group 2. The number of subjects were 18 students of class VIII consisting of 6 students in each group. The data was collected using a scale of learning discipline and documentation. It was hypothesized that there was differences in learning discipline prior and after the use of self-management strategies. The intervention was given to group counseling with self-management strategies for 5 meetings. The result indicates that there was influence on learning discipline prior and after group counseling on self management strategy of the three groups seen from result of asymp. sig equal to 0,001. It means that group counseling on self-management strategy was effective to improve students’ learning discipline.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the effectiveness of discovery learning in improvingEnglish writing skill of extroverted and introverted students which is compared withdirect instruction as the traditional learning method. In this research, the researcheremployed a quantitative research by using experimental factorial design. Thepopulation in this research was the eleventh graders of state senior high school Salein academic year 2013/ 2014 and the samples were 20 students from both classesand categories. The try out was conducted to measure validity and reliability. Andthe two ways ANOVA was conducted to test the hypotheses, two –way analysis ofvariance with F-test at the 5% (0.05) level of significance. The result of this studyrevealed that the use of discovery learning was effective to the extroverted studentsthan the introverted students. In line with it, the finding indicates that the use of directinstruction was also effective to introverted students than the extroverted students. Inother words, the result of the used of discovery learning had a bigger influence to theextroverted students rather than introverted students.

Abstract

This research aims to describe the factors influencing teenagers’ subjective wellbeing and the subjective well-being condition in broken home teenagers. This is a quantitative research with a phenomenology approach. The subjects are three junior high school students in the district of Wonogiri who has the following characteristics: (1) teenagers from broken home families and (2) 12 – 16 years old of ages. The data gathering methods include interview and observations. The data analyses procedurescovers open coding, axical coding and selective coding. The results show that the factors influencing subjective well-being in teenagers includes social support, parental guidance, gender, finance, and coping strategy. The subjective well-beingin Vn ad DN are better than informan An. It occurs in life satisfaction asspect and apparently showed in some facts, such as graduating elementary school with good grades and getting a bicycle as a present. Some acts that can bring positive effect covers vacation with the family, helping the family, sports championships and getting good grades at school. The acts that can bring negative effect include feeling guilty, do not have pocket money, negative thoughts toward father and the neighbours, thinking off father, getting bad grades, family loss, mother who always gets angry,and jealousy towards friends.

Abstract

The research deals with permeability of students’ interlanguage system that reflects in students’ composition of SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Surakarta. The aims of the research are (1) to describe what the types of permeability, (2) to describe the sourceof the influence in students’ IL system, and (3) to describe the influence frequency of students’ IL system. The type of this research is qualitative research. The data of this research are erroneous sentences found in the students’ compositions. The method of collecting data is elicitation and document analysis. The writer uses descriptive analysis by Celce Marcia and a modified framework of Error Analysis by Shridar a technique for analyzing data. The results indicate that (1) the permeability is found atthe level of morphology and syntax, (2) the source of the influence is students’ mother tongue (Indonesian) and target language (English), (3) the influence frequency of the mother tongue to students’ interlanguage system is 48% and of the target languageto the students’ interlanguage system is 52%. The conclusion is that the learners’ interlanguage is open to to influence from the outside and influence from the inside language system. It progressively approaches the target language as a result oflearners’ attempt on constructing a new linguistic system.
The Student Nurses Written Works of Health Science Institute: Error Analysis in Syntactical and Morphological Category Fitriani, Somariah

Abstract

The research aims to examine and analyze student nurses’ written works in term of syntax and morphology category. Twenty-six students of the third semester took an English presentation course, which focused on medical cases. The results have revealed that 186 error identifications were found consisting of 132 syntactical errors and 54 morphological errors.  The students make errors in the types of article, preposition, parallel structure, the use of be, passive voice, word order, tenses, infinitive to, modal auxiliary and subject determiner in syntactical category. While in morphological error, they make errors in the plural form, subject verb agreement, comparative adjective and word form. Word order is as the most common language error in syntax category with 36 total errors or 19.35% out of 186.  The second one is preposition with 26 total errors or 13.97%. While in morphology category, subject verb agreement is the most common one with 29 total errors or 15.59%. The second common one is word form with 13 total errors or 6.98%. It can be concluded that there are 132 (70.96%) of error identification in syntactical category and 54 error identifications or 29.04% in morphological category. In addition to its error identification in syntactical and morphological features, the research has found that the causes of students’ errors are due to intralanguage and interlanguage errors as it has some slightly differences between Bahasa Indonesia and English in term of grammatical structure.
