Abstract

The Research Question is “Is there any Correlation between Students’ Extraversion Personality and their writing skill of the Muhammadiyah University of Makassar? “The Researcher used Descriptive Study; the aims of the thus research are to find out the correlation between students’ Extraversion Personality and their writing skill. The result of the students’ writing test had increased in scores. The mean score of students writing skill is 32, 72 and mean score of personality test is 59, 41. The successful of minimal criteria (KKM) was 70 there were students got very good in writing skill and Personality test students’ got balance.Keywords: Correlation, Students’ extraversion, Personality, Writing Skill

Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether or not Mistake Buster Technique is effective to be used in writing a recount composition and find out the extent to which Mistake Buster Technique improve the ability of students in writing a recount composition for the Second Grade Students. A  quasi-experimental design was employed  with two  classes of the  second graders at  one school  in Makassar selected  purposively as a sample.  The data were obtained through a pre-test and a post-test.  The writing  assessment was adopted  from  Depdikbud  (1996)  covering language use and organization.  The findings were analyzed statistically sing independent t-test procedure.The research findings indicated that the use of Mistake Buster Technique could improve the students‘ writing skill in language use and organization in writing recount composition. It was proved by the students’ mean score of experimental class in pre-test was (10.125) and in post-test was (65.5).While the mean score of control class in pre-test was (9.375) and in post-test was (41.125). The findings of this research shows that the value of t-test in the posttest is higher than t table (4.28 2,02). It means that there was a significant difference of the students’ writing skill in language use and organization in writing recount composition before and after being taught using Mistake Buster Technique at the Second Grade of SMPN 33 Makassar. The statistical computation showed that Mistake Buster Technique was likely effective in improving the students’ writing skill on language use and organization in writing recount composition.

Abstract

Listening is one of the four basic skills in learning a foreign language besides listening, reading, and writing. It has been taught since the students entered a junior high school, however, there are some difficulties faced by vocational school students to listen to the recording. After doing observation, some teachers say that they still have difficulties in teaching listening to students since students are not able to express what are on their minds because their lack of actual language. To help the teachers in teaching listening to students, teachers may use an interesting teaching method to present their teaching materials that also help them in creating fun class. One of the alternative methods is Audio-lingual teaching method. The objectives of the study were to explain the students’ ability to recognize word meaning in the context and to recognize the content of text.The design of the research used a collaborative classroom action research (CAR). This kind of research was designed by group which consisted of teacher and researcher from educational university. The place of this research was in SMK YAPIP MAKASSAR. The samples in this research were the students at the second year of class 2 Akuntansi 1. After conducting the research, the students’ means score showed the improvement in cycle 2. Abstract

The utilization of multimedia technology has given positive contributions in the implementation of teaching listening. It provides the teachers with easier and more efficient ways to facilitate listening materials and practices in the form of audio as the main important sources. However, employing audio only is considered to be not enough to assist students to comprehend the information well. The use of audio-visual materials such as videos is proposed as a better means to acquire students’ listening comprehension. The visualization of videos provides the students the ease to get better contexts, decrease the boredom, and stimulate the imagination to the more authentic situation. This paper employed causal comparative research to examine the use of audio and audiovisual materials in teaching listening, then to evaluate which one has a better result in obtaining students’ listening comprehension as viewed from genders.Keywords: video, listening comprehension, gender

Abstract

The objectives of this research are to find out the improvement of the students’ writing ability in terms of content and organization through Venn Diagram Method at Class A students of Intensive English Class. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR). It had conducted two cycles. Where each cycle has consisted of four meeting. It employed writing test as the instrument. The number subject of the research was 28 students and consist of 5 men and 23 women. Implementation of the first and the second cycle during the four meeting. The technique of the data collection used the cycle, based on the material being taught. Based on the findings of the research, the improvement of the students’ writing ability in content and organization were significantly improved. Where the mean score in content was 7.79 and mean score in the organization was 7.57. It’s mean that by using Venn Diagram method can improve the students’ writing ability.Keywords: Venn Diagram, Method, Writing.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the improvement of content and organization in writing skill by using Sedona Method at the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Batara, Gowa. The researcher used A Classroom Action Research (CAR). The Researcher had conducted two cycles, where each cycle consisted of four meetings. This classroom Action Research (CAR) was at The Eighth Grade of SMA Batara Gowa, Class XB. As the subject in this research was the X Grade with students’ number as about 29 students. The instruments were writing test and observation sheet. The application of Sedona Method can improve the students’ writing, especially in content and organization. This leads to the conclusion that application of Sedona Method was needed in the English Language teaching and learning in improve their competence to organize their idea. Sedona Method that was focused on the learners can engage the students to organize their ideas better than before. The findings of the research were (1) the students’ content achievement was improved 9.98% from diagnostic test to cycle 1 and was improve 10.03% from cycle I to cycle II (2) the students’ organization achievement was improving 8.63% from diagnostic test to cycle I and improved 10.03% from cycle I to Cycle II. From the description above it could conclude the improving of the students’ writing skill in the descriptive paragraph in terms of content and organization by using Sedona Method at the Tenth Grade of SMA Batara Gowa was improved.Keywords: Writing Skill, Sedona Method

Abstract

This research aimed to find out the development of the students’ ability to write narrative text viewed from both generic structure and language use at XI IPA of SMA Muhammadiyah Sungguminasa, Gowa. The type of this research was a Classroom Action Research consisted of two cycles. One cycle consisted of four meetings. Thus, that there were eight meetings for two cycles. This classroom action research was done at XI IPA of SMA Muhammadiyah Sungguminasa, Gowa. The research subjects were the students of class XI in 2012/2013 academic year with 26 students. Those consisted of 10 men and 16 women. The instruments of this research were writing test and observation. The research findings indicated that the Use of SWELL Method could develop the students’ ability to write narrative text viewed from the generic structure and language use. It was proved by the students’ mean score in cycle 2 test result was (77.81) which developed 16.31 % from the cycle 1 mean score (66.98). It was highly developed from a diagnostic test (D – test) mean score (58.69). The students’ development in cycle 2 indicated that it had met the researcher score target (75), and considered to be successful criteria in developing the students’ ability to write narrative text covering generic structure and language use.Keywords: writing, development, social interactive writing

Abstract

This research purposed to find out how the improvement of the students’ speaking accuracy and fluency through Rotating Trio Exchange Strategy at the eighth year of SMPN 1 Pallangga. This research was a classroom action research (C.A.R) which consisted of two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The subject of this research was one of the classes with the total of students is 33 students. The instruments were oral test and observation sheet. The research findings of this research indicated the students’speaking ability in terms of accuracy and fluency through Rotating Trio Exchange Strategy was effective and significant in improving the students’ speaking ability. It was proved that the findings indicate that the mean score of cycle II was greater than the mean score of cycle I (7.55 5.84) and the mean score of cycle I also was greater than the mean score of D-test (5.84 4.19), it means that Rotating Trio Exchange Strategy improved the students’ speaking ability in English. Besides, it is better to use in teaching speaking ability than the conventional strategies because this was also improved the students' interest to make them active in learning the speaking ability. The conclusion of the research, Rotating Trio Exchange Strategy improved the student improved the student ability in accuracy and fluency.

Abstract

This research aimed to reveal (1) what strategies were applied by lecturers in English speaking class, (2) how those strategies were applied and (3) to know the students’ perceptions toward the use of those strategies.This research employed qualitative grounded theory design. The subjects of the research were two non-native English lecturers who taught at the same private university in Makassar. The instruments of research were; observation, interview, and documents examination. The technique of data analysis adopted three series of codification of grounded theory approach; open coding, axial coding, and selective coding.The result of this research revealed five categories of strategies that applied by the two subjects. They were; (1) strategy of checking attendance, (2) strategy of seating arrangement, (3) strategy of teaching-learning activity, (4) strategy of correction and (5) strategy of assessment. Strategy of checking attendance, they were: numbering and one-off calling name; strategy of seating arrangement, they were: one-big circle, two circle, U-model, and island model; strategy of teaching-learning activity, they were: audio-based presentation, topic-based presentation, peer share idea, role play, discussion, and simulation; strategy of correction, they were: teacher correction and peer correction; and strategy of assessment, that was: performance-based assessment. In accordance with those strategies, the students raised perception that those strategies encouraged them to be good at speaking in terms of improving their confidence to share idea, vocabulary, pronunciation, and grammar.Keywords: Lecturer’s Strategy, Teaching Speaking, Perception

Abstract

The aim of his research is that want to know the herringbone technique application is effective to improve student skill in reading, predict, make the conclusion in every paragraph and able to solve the problem of students in understand reading text or discourse. This research is experimental research and conducted at SMP Negeri 23 Makassar. The total of population in Grade VII students are 480 students that shared in 12 classes. The researcher choose sample in class VII-12 are 32 students. The aim of the researcher to choose class VII12 as a subject of the research because the average of the student in this class is stillless to understand the reading text. The result of data analysis in pre-test and post-test showed that t-test score is 36.25 and t-table score is 2.036. The t-test score is better than t-table or (tt36.25 2.036). It showed that the students’ skill to understand reading text at the end of the research is improved. It can be identified with the significant different between average score in pre-test (3) and post-test 5.8). This research showed that the herringbone technique had tried at the SMP Negeri 23 Makassar and it worked. It appeared that student’s English skill in understanding reading text from bad to be better.
