Abstract

This research aimed to explain the improvement of students’ vocabulary of the noun (abstract noun and concrete noun), Verb (regular verb and irregular verb) and adjective (Descriptive adjective).The method of this research was classroom action research consisted of two cycles. One cycle consists of four meeting. Thus there were eight meetings for two cycles. This classroom action research was done at the second year of SMA Negeri 1 Enrekang. As the subject of this research was class XI in 2011/2012 academic year with students’ number about 31 students. These consist of 23 women and 8 men. The instruments of this research were observation sheet and vocabulary test or evaluation. The findings of the research were the students’ score in vocabulary mastery through the bilingual magazine. Before applying this media in teaching and learning vocabulary, the students’ mean score in D-test was 4.6 (poor). After applying bilingual magazine as a media of teaching and learning process, in cycle I the students’ mean score improved to 5.35(fair) and then in cycle II also improved to 7.20 (fairly good).

Abstract

This research was aimed to explain the improvement of the students’ speaking fluency and the students’ speaking accuracy through the of discussion technique in teaching speaking. The research was implemented in SMP Pondok Pesantren Darul Aman Gombara Makassar at the eighth-grade students through a classroom action research (CAR). The researcher took 33 students as the subject of the research. The researcher taught speaking English using practice posters. To find the results, the researcher got the information from the students’ answers on oral test in the form of D-test, the test of a cycle I and test of cycle II. The result of the research using Practice Posters showed that the researcher used the CAR (Classroom Action Research) principle to collect the data. The research conducted through two cycles with each cycle consisted of four meetings. By implementing Practice Posters as a media in teaching speaking, the students had chanced to be active and cooperative in learning speaking so that the students’ speaking accuracy and the students’ speaking fluency achievement were improved significantly. It could be seen from the result of the students’ activities during the action, and the students’ speaking achievement in speaking. The mean score of the students’ speaking D - Test was 3.67. It was categorized as fair classification (low ability). While the mean score of the students’ speaking test in cycle I was 5.02. It is higher than the mean score of the students’ speaking test.  But the result was not significant from the result which was expected according to the background namely 6.5, so the research was continued to the cycle II and the mean score of the students’ speaking achievement of cycle II was 7.16. It was categorized as good. It also indicated that there was a significant score from the result expected in the background namely 6.5. The result above was acquired from the students’ speaking ability in terms of speaking accuracy and speaking fluency.

Abstract

This research aimed to observe and know the improvement of students’ speaking skill at the second grade Exact students of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar which amount 22 students, that covers in accuracy and fluency through Simulation Technique in Classroom Action Research (CAR).To know the students’ improvement achievement, the researcher used Diagnostic test, test cycle II, and test cycle II. Before implementing test cycle I and cycle II, the researcher applied action to the students through two cycles, which covers four meetings for each cycle.Cycle I test result had showed the improvement in the students speaking skill in the comparison with the diagnostic test, that is 3.5 (3.4 for accuracy and 3.6 for fluency) in the diagnostic test but that improvement is still not complete the standard score which is 6.5, so that the researcher continued to apply cycle II. And in the test cycle II finally the students showed the improvement significantly which is 7 for accuracy. That result proved that Simulation Technique could improve the students’ speaking skill at the second grade exact students of SMA Muhammadiyah 7 Makassar.Heaton, J. B. 1975. Abstract

This research aimed to find out the correlation between students’ writing ability and their vocabulary mastery of the eighth-grade students SMP Handayani Sungguminasa Gowa. The problem statement of the research was, “Is there any correlation between students’ writing ability and their vocabulary mastery?” The research used a Descriptive Research, the instrument of this study tested, namely writing ability (in terms of rewriting of the story in the film) test and vocabulary mastery test. The population of this research is to the eighth-grade students of SMP Handayani Sungguminasa Gowa which consists of 28 students, all of them were the sample. Therefore, this research used cluster sampling. The result of the data analysis shows that the students’ writing ability (in terms of rewriting of the story in the film) stated in 60.00 of the mean score, where their vocabulary mastery test stated 61.00 of the mean score. Coefficient correlation between both variables shows that there is a significant correlation between students writing ability and their vocabulary mastery, it has lies between 0,600 - 0,800 which is categorized as substantial.Keywords: correlation, writing, vocabulary, ability

Abstract

This research was aimed at finding out the improvement of students’ speaking accuracy and fluency through Participation Point System (PPS) Method in teaching speaking. The research method used was class action research design consisting of 4 stages, namely planning, action observation, and reflection. It had 2 cycles. The research was implemented by the Tenth-grade students of SMA PGRI Sungguminasa 2011/2012. The researcher took 26 students as the subject of the research. The researcher taught speaking English using PPS Method. The data were gathered after scoring the students’ speaking ability on both accuracy (vocabulary and grammar) and fluency (smoothness) through diagnostic test and test of the cycle I and II. The research findings showed that the mean score of the students’ speaking diagnostic test was 3.7 as categorized poor (low ability) while the mean score of the students’ speaking test in cycle I was 5.2. It had a significant progress but the result still did not reach the determined standard score 6.5, so the research has proceeded to the cycle II that the researcher gained the mean score 7 as categorized well. It showed that the latest progress in the cycle II had reached beyond the determined standard score and there was a significant improvement on the tenth-grade students’ speaking ability on both accuracy (vocabulary and grammar) and fluency (smoothness) in the English teaching using Participation Point System Method at SMA PGRI Sungguminasa 2011/2012.Keywords: Improving, Speaking, Participation, Point, System.

Abstract

This study aims at knowing the students’ interest in learning English Grammar through Easy to Leam English Grammar Compact Disc (ELEG CD) computer software. This research used the descriptive method with twenty-eight participants from the students of TKJ (Technique, Computer, and Network) in the SMK Bajiminasa Makassar. The researcher collected data through a questionnaire that aims at knowing students’ ability in learning English Grammar through Easy to Learn English Grammar Compact Disc (ELEG CD) computer software. The researcher itemized five positive statements and five negative statements. The writer also conducted observation as additional information about the condition of computer laboratory, “Easy to Learn English Grammar Compact Disc” computer software and the students’ behaviors in playing it, It aims to know how computer laboratory and Easy to Learn English Grammar Compact Disc computer software influence students in learning English especially English grammar. The result of this research showed that the students of TKJ (Technique, Computer, and Network) in the SMK Bajiminasa Makassar were increasing in learning English Grammar through Easy to Learn EnglishGrammar Compact Disc computer software. This was proved by the aggregate percentage of the students got from the questionnaires that is from item l up to 10. Based on the findings, the researcher makes the conclusion that in English grammar through “ Easy to Learn English Grammar Compact Disc” computer software could improve the students’ ability.

Abstract

This research aimed to explain the improvement of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with main ideas and sequence details and interpretive comprehension dealing with prediction outcomes and conclusion. To explain the improvement, the researcher used a classroom action research (CAR) which was conducted in two cycles in which every cycle consisted of four meetings. The location of this research was taken at the ninth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 5 Mariso, Makassar with a number of the subject were 36 students. The research findings indicated that the implementation of Mood Understand Recall Digest Expand and Review (MURDER) Strategy was improved the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension and interpretive comprehension. It was proved by the mean score of cycle I was 64.31. It was classified as fair then improved to be 71.20. It was classified as fairly good in cycle II. They are higher than the mean score of diagnostic test 52.21 that classified as poor. Therefore there was improvement of the students’ reading comprehension in terms of literal comprehension dealing with main ideas and sequence of details and interpretive comprehension dealing with prediction of outcomes and conclusion.

Abstract

This research aimed to explain the improved of the students’ accuracy and fluency in speaking. This research employed an Experimental design which was conducted in Pre-Test, Treatment, and Post-Test of five meetings. The location of this research was taken at eleventh year students of SMAN 1 Lilirilau Kabupaten Soppeng with a number of the subject were 35 students. The research findings indicate that the application of Predict-Explain-Observe-Explain was significant in improving the students’ accuracy and fluency in speaking. It was proved by the mean score of Pre-test was 3.48 then improved to be 8.32 in Post-test. And also there was significant because the result of t-test was 26.88 and t-table was 2.042. It mean that there was the improved of the students’ accuracy and fluency in speaking.

Abstract

The objectives of the research were to find out whether or not the use of KangGuru English Learning Packages can improve the listening achievement of the students of SMA Negeri 1 Sungguminasa in learning to listen. The research Pre-experimental method with one group pre-test and post-test design. The procedure of collecting data involved administering pre-test before treatment and then post-test. The population of this research was the eleventh year students of SMA Negeri 1 Sungguminasa, academic year 2015/2016 which consisted of 360 students. The sample was taken by random sampling technique, where the researcher took 4 students in every class and the total of the sample was 36 students. The result of the mean score of the students’ listening achievement before being taught through KangGuru English Learning Packages was 62,33 and it was classified as “fair”. Whereas, after doing the treatment, the mean score was 90,69 and it was classified was “very good”. To find out the significance of the difference between pre-test and post-test, the researcher applied t-test. The value of t-test was 11.57 which was greater than the value of t-table 1.689 at the level of significance 0.05 and the degree of freedom was 35. It was revealed that KangGuru English Learning Packages significantly improved the listening achievement of the students.Keywords: Listening, Achievement, KangGuru English Learning Packages.
