Abstract

Intoduction: The cat breeder every day began by feeding, bathing, cutting the nails and cleaning the cage. This activity presented a health risk for breeders to be infected with the parasite Toxoplasma gondii. This study aims to analyze the incidence of chronic toxoplasmosis infection in cat breeders in Surabaya. Method: This type of research was observational with a cross-sectional study design. A total of 19 respondents involved in this study came from members of the cat breeder organization. Sampling using a simple random sampling method. Respondent information data in the form of cat hygiene, cage sanitation, and personal hygiene were collected through an interview and observation process. Meanwhile, to find out toxoplasmosis infection, a blood sample serology test was performed at the Clinical Laboratory. Data were analyzed with qualitative descriptive methods to see a picture of each variable with a toxoplasmosis infection. Result and Discussion: Serological test results showed that the prevalence of toxoplasmosis infection was 58%. Chronic toxoplasmosis infection of 62% occurred in owners with poor hygiene of drums and 91% occurred in owners with poor personal hygiene. Conclusion: As a preventive measure against the risk of infection, breeders of cats need to always maintain the sanitation of the cage, such as frequent cleaning of the cage, cat feces and cleaning the floor around the cage so that infective oocysts do not multiply around the cage area. Also, must use personal protective equipment and wash your hands after contact with cats.

Abstract

Domestic wastewater treatment is one of the environmental problems in Surabaya. Besides causing water pollution, wastewater also causeing health problems. A method to treat wastewater is Communal Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). The effluent of WWTP is then reused by residents. The study aimed to describe the WWTP in Kelurahan Simokerto, Kecamatan Simokerto, Kota Surabaya, and compare wastewater parameters to the regulation. The study is a descriptive observational and cross-sectional research. The method used is interview with WWTP organizer and laboratory examination on 5 samples of influent and effluent parameters include pH, BOD, COD, TSS, oil and grease. All of influent and effluent parameters have already met domestic wastewater quality standards in Peraturan Gubernur Jawa Timur No. 72 Tahun 2013 so the effluent is safe to be discharged into the environment. Since the influent and effluent is below the maximum level of quality standards, the Communal WWTP in Kelurahan Simokerto hasn't already met standard for an appropriate WWTP. The experts need to do study about wastewater characteristics before building a WWTP so that the appropriate WWTP is obtainable. Moreover, they need to do in-depth study about factors that affect wastewater quality. It's necessary to arrange detailed SOP for routine operations and maintenance of WWTP accompanied by improvement of understanding of the organizer and citizens about the importance of communal WWTP as well as how to operate and maintain.

Abstract

Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is an endemic diseases in Indonesia. Incidence rates of the disease in Surabaya is reported as the highest for decades including of the area within Tenggilis Community Health Center. In the last five years, there were 273 new DHF cases notified. As the prevention for this detrimental menace, the government implemented breeding sites eradication program. This research aims to find out the association of breeding sites eradication program of covering, cleaning, burying, larvaciding, bed nets,  (3M Plus) and  its association with the existence of Aedes aegypti  larvae index and the incidence of DHF in 2017. This research  uses case control study design with The sample group was all the households in the work area of Tenggilis community health care whose family member diagnosed with. Case group diagnosis were confirmed and recorded at the Tenggilis Community Heath Care during period of April - May 2017 with total of 11 cases. The comparison group was taken using purposive sampling method within 100 meters of the observed objects' residences. The Result of fisher exact test of knowledge level about PSN showed significant positive association with p-value: 0,009. While insignificant association was reported by variable of attitude level, action level, larvae index with p-value 1,000, 0,361. and 0,387. It can be summarized that knowledge and behavior has a significant association with the incidence of DHF in 2017 in the area of Tenggilis Community Health Center (Puskesmas). However, the existence of larva has insignificant association with the incidence of dengue in 2017 in the Tenggilis Community Health Center (Puskesmas Tenggilis) Surabaya. Community empowerment is considered as alternative approach to improve community behavior in breeding sites eradication.
