Abstract

This research aimed to investigate the effectiveness of using cooperative learning methods in developing the students’ reading ability in English class and their attitudes toward cooperative learning. The research focused on the students’ interest to study English by working in groups and how their academic achievement increased. The research was conducted in a Christian school in Kalimantan. The data was obtained by giving students a questionnaire, reading test and observation of the application of STAD (Student Team Achievement Division) and Think Pair and Share cooperative methods in the two cycles. The STAD cooperative method was applied in the first cycle; and Think pair and Share was applied in the second cycle. After collecting and analyzing the data, the researcher noted that these two cooperative methods helped to develop the students’ reading skills because they helped understand the story and the vocabulary. The questionnaire given to the students also showed that the majority of the students liked to learn through cooperative learning activity because they liked to share their ideas.

Abstract

This research aims at analysing subtitle in Maleficent movie. The research purposes are to analyze the clarity, accuracy and naturalness. Research approach is qualitative research. Research type is library research. Data are required from script of Maleficent movie, reader and experts‘ evaluation. This research uses documentation as data collecting technique. Researchers use investigator triangulation to make research can be trusted. Result of research shows: (1) clarity of subtitle is high with presentation of clear sentences is 77%, less clear sentence is 19.8% and unclear sentence is 3.2%; (2¬) accuracy of subtitle is high with presentation of accurate translation is 82.5%, less accurate is 14.5% and inaccurate translation is 3%; (3) naturalness of subtitle is high, with presentation of natural translation is 79.2% (1st expert) and 77.1% (2nd expert), less natural translation is 18.3 (1st expert) and 2.4 (2nd expert), and unnatural translaton is 22.3% (1st expert) and 1.6% (2nd expert)..

Abstract

The existence of development in the education field requires teachers to be able to act more than just a teacher who knows how to teach. To become an advanced teacher, a teacher should have good professional competence and pedagogical competence. However, there are still problems that hinder the teacher when conducted the teaching and learning process. The problems that appear in the English classroom are teachers’ professional competence and teachers’ pedagogical competence.            This study aims to describe and explain teachers’ experience in dealing with their professional and pedagogical competence in teaching the English language. This is a qualitative study and used interview and observation as the instruments to collect the data from 3 teachers as the participant in SMA NegeriBenlutuSo’e - East Nusa Tenggara.            The results of the study found that teachers’ low professional and pedagogical competence caused the teachers to have inadequate English teaching competence in teaching. It caused the teachers to teach the students with inappropriate learning materials, monotonous learning activities, and uncooperative assessment methods. The results of this study also recommend that teachers have high English language proficiency and teaching competence to be able to teach English in Senior High School.

Abstract

This research aimed at analyzing the perceptions and the implementation of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) of teaching English to young learners by English Primary School Teachers in Klungkung. The research design was embedded mixed method design which interpreted dominantly qualitative. The research subjects were three different English Primary School Teachers in Klungkung. The result showed that there were gaps between teachers’ perceptions and implementation of pedagogical content knowledge. The final result of teachers’ perceptions categorized as high and qualified as strong, which is in interval 3.3335 ≤ M ≤ 4.0005. Meanwhile, the final result of teachers’ implementation categorized as very low and qualified as very weak, which is in interval 0.33 ≤ M ≤ 7.41. Some challenges were found as the causes of teachers’ very weak implementation of PCK. Besides, English teachers’ awareness to improve their practice quality regarding PCK of teaching English to young learners needs improving.

Abstract

In this digital era, we cannot ignore that the use of Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) has given many benefits for both teachers and students in English instruction, especially in facilitating the students with an enjoyable and interesting learning experience. This research is a case study which aimed to investigate: 1) How is the implementation of CALL in the EFL setting, 2) How are the students’ attitude toward the use of CALL in English teaching and learning process, 3) How are the students’ achievement after the implementation of CALL in English teaching-learning process. The Subjects of this research were 30 students at SMA Laboratorium UM Malang. The data of this research were collected from the interview, observation checklist, questionnaire, and tests. The result of this research revealed that the implementation of CALL gave a positive effect on the students' achievement and broaden students' experience in learning English based on authentic context. Moreover, the students also presented positive responses toward the used of CALL in the English teaching-learning process.

Abstract

Nowadays, Indonesia was facing Industrial revolution 4.5 and comes for 5.0. It was impacted in all of sector of education especially in teaching-learning process. From these, the stick-holder of department of institution have to fine new solution in facing this era, moreover the condition amid Covid 19 Pandemic. All teacher or even a lecturer have to find solution to renew the method in teaching. As researcher found today in utilizing FaceApp application as a media in teaching speaking skill. This Application can be implemented through practical guidelines made by research which was written in this research articles to be interesting media in teaching speaking. This media can be implemented to do students in trying to describe, discuss, identify, and explain also report about the picture they have as speaking activity in the class. Thus, from this, the researcher classified two research focuses. These are: How are the guidelines of implementing FaceApp as teaching media in speaking and how do student practice their speaking skill by using this media. The method of this research was qualitative descriptive research. Where, the researcher try to describe the practical guideline of FaceApp media in teaching speaking skill. The data of this research is students' speaking transcription gotten in the speaking class activity. While, the source of data in this research is the class activity itself which was recorded in video. In the result of this research was the researcher found ten guidelines for implementing FaceApp application as a media in teaching speaking. These ten practical guidelines can be used to run speaking class activity in describing, analyzing, identifying, discussing and group pairing discussing as speaking practice for English language skill.

Abstract

Memoirs of a Geisha is one of literary work that describes the issues about the development of Japan civilization and the growth of a certain profession called Geisha. This research aims to analyze the woman exploitation reflected in Memoirs of A Geisha. Method that is used to analyze the woman exploitation is qualitative method. As the object of the research, Memoirs of a Geisha is also become the primary data source. This novel is written by Arthur Golden and printed in 1997 by Vintage Books, a division of Random House, Inc., New York. The secondary data sources are the author’s biography and books of literary theory. In analyzing the data, the researcher used library research and descriptive analysis. In analyzing the woman exploitation, the writer uses feminist perspective. The term that will be analyzed consists of woman’s position, woman’s role, woman’s participation, and woman’s right. The result of the research shows that women are exploited in male-controlled. It also shows that woman must fight to get their right. Woman must be clever and brilliant to have the freedom. Memoirs of a Geisha is very interesting novel to analyze. Therefore, it is possible to be a good novel to read and take the moral lesson from it.

Abstract

This study aimed at describing and identifying the challenges faced by vocational English teachers in implementing the 2013 curriculum. This study used qualitative research approach conducted in four vocational high schools in Trenggalek and Kediri town, East Java, Indonesia. The data were collected by conducting interview and questionnaire. The results of this study was a number of challenges faced by English teachers dealt with designing the lesson plan, preparing and implementing the materials, learning assessment and classroom management. These challenges, therefore, need more attentions and solutions to succeed teaching and learning process and give better impacts for the English teachers in the implementation of the 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the using series of pictures to improve the skill in writing recount text of first semester students of medical record program in STIKES Bhakti HusadaMuliaMadiun . This study was done on september  2019. The writer chooses the first semester  class that consists of 45 students. The result of this study is expected to be useful for students, teachers, and further researchers, because the study will give contribution to improve students’ writing by using series ofpictures. The method that was used  in this research was classroom action research.It was carried out in two cycles. The techniques for collecting data are planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The subject of this study was the first semester student of medical record program of STIKES BHM Madiun During the research, the researcher acted as the teacher and acted as an observer during the implementation of series of pictures. She made reflection about what happened in cycle I. After that, she is re-planning the activities that were going to do in cycle II. The instruments used in this study were the writing test, observation sheet, questionnaire and interview.The data collected through writing test using minimum scored in written test were ≥ 70. If the results of the test ≥ 75%, students have score ≥ 70, it means that the research is success. And if the result of the test < 75%, students have score < 70, it means that the research is not success.After the result of the students’ test was analyzed, it showed that series of picture had improved the students’ writing ability. The result of the study from preliminary study showed that the students’ writing ability was quite poor. Whereas the result of the cycle I and cycle II indicated that the students who pass the test areincrease.The research findings were taken from cycle I and cycle II. The result of test 1 showed that 19 students got score less than 70 or 30% was unsuccessful and 26 students score more than70 or 70% was successful. The result of test II showed that 9 student got score less than 70 or 20% was unsuccessful and 36 students score more than 70 or 80% successful. It means that in cycle II the students’ score test got better and the research is success

Abstract

COVID-19 is a new pandemic affecting every sector worldwide including in educational environment. Thus, a mixture of various e-learning is required in order to make TLP possible. Besides, having self-regulated learning is beneficial for each student to survive during study from home because of the pandemic. Thus, most students need a media and teaching instruction that motivate them better than the existed media. In this way, this research is aimed at developing VIVOICE (Virtual Vocabulary Voice) to promote EFL learners’ self-regulated vocabulary learning. The research design is R&D completed with quasi-experimental research design to prove the effectiveness of the developed product. A set of questionnaire and interview are used to collect the data of the research. The finding of need analysis showed that most students need a better media of TLP during the outbreak. However, the product was developed based on the result of the students’ need analysis, Buku Ajar Vocabulary 1 (@televocabot) (@televocabot), evaluation and suggestion from the expert validators. More importantly, the findings of the field testing showed that product gets supportive support from the students and proved practical enough during the outbreak. The quasi-experimental in field testing done to prove the effectiveness of the developed product resulted the mean score of experimental groups is increased from 75.9 to 80.8 while control group is also increased 76.1 to 76.7. Then, after the analysis by using SPSS version 25, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) in independent sample t-test was 0.035 (<0.05) meaning that there is a significance difference between experimental group and control group. Meanwhile from paired sample t-test result, the value of Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.005 (<0.05) that mean there is an improvement of self-regulated learning level in the experimental group after using VIVOICE during the outbreak. In conclusion, VIVOICE (Virtual Vocabulary Voice) is an effective audio-visual application to promote EFL learners’ self-regulated learning during the outbreak.
